Absolutely. Now, the tricky part is that 40 years ago they didn't view sexual assault as the practically-worse-than-murder offense that it is today. It was like that all over the country. I think that should be a factor, but not the end of the story. However, even if what I said is true, there needs to be accountability. I just bring that up because I dont think it should get lost in the discussion. Obviously, the most important thing is the victims and making sure we learn from this so it doesn't happen again, anywhere

MGoBlue 93 - Not sure where you grew up, but I’m pretty confident pretty much all parts of the country in the 70’s and 80’s did not look at sexual assault in a good or different light than it is looked at today. The difference between now and then is that many more victims now are willing to report it, whereas back then victims often remained silent. But in general society back then certainly did not think sexual assaults of college students was ok or something that could or should be rationalized away. At least not anyone with a hint of a moral compass. Schembechler knee better. Anyone with even a hint of a moral compass would have known better and that is true back in the 70’s and 80’s as well as it is today. And if Schembechler actually thought that type of conduct was ok or should be condoned it most certainly was not “because of the times”! If he believed that it was because he was a scumbag without a hint of a correct moral compass, or actual integrity.

It’s not really difficult - apart from you Michigan men - to see how this could happen. It would be like Paterno absolutely not wanting to give any credence whatsoever to ANYTHING that could possibly derail the momentum that he and Penn State enjoyed. Then to be suspected of covering up - for even one year - would remove any legacy they were wanting to leave so it was much easier to pretend something so awful was NOT happening. If you are going to sit there and take a moral high ground that this wasn’t the person you knew - and explain to us how you could have really known him - then you are one sad individual. If Bo’s personality - which doesn’t take much experience to see this absolutely could have happened with his ego and penchant for being a bully - you wouldn’t think twice that it could have happened had his forceful personality not won or shared 13 Big Ten championships. Had he been been mediocre you would be all over this. Had it been Woody Hayes being accused, you would be all over this. This many students and athletes are not colluding to take down Bo Schembechler. Unfortunately, if Michigan is truly held accountable, then you will find out it’s true. I do find it interesting you mention their current coach. What else could he say. Michigan is fatally flawed. The sooner they face up to their terrible issues and truly figure out who they are and want to be the better. But they keep being saddled with this perception that they are something. Believe us Rich, they are not!

The fury is pointed at Bo because, if the allegations end up being true, a huge amount of the victims were only able to be victimized because Bo not only turned a blind eye, but allowed this man to do this. There's not a ton of fury for the Doctor because people are too busy with disgust instead of fury. Some people are sick in the head in being able to do stuff like this, but there's another level of anger for a man who had the power to put an end to it but actively chose not to.

There are incredible people who went/go to that university, and while I root against them in sports it's unfair to blame them for the behind the scenes actions of someone they revered. Hopefully they respond in the way they should, but it's unfair to blame the entire community for the bad actions of a few.
