Correction: Everyone always drops his diaphragm when he inhales regardless of whether he does abdominal or chest breathing in order to increase the volume of air in the lungs. Check in any physiology book.

Yup. When you breathe in, your diaphragm actually flattens and tenses to allow your lungs to expand; when you breathe out it "curves up" into a relaxed, dome shaped position, and air goes out of your lungs.

Excellent! The first thing i worked on when training for boxing was breathing in relation to punching and moving around. It really improved my stamina.

Thank you Sensei. As a TKD practitioner, I find your advice invaluable. TKD shares similarities with Shotokan. Could you please do a video on keeping hips and knees healthy via good alignment and form?

Your diaphragm descriptions are incorrect. When you breathe in the diaphragm moves down, this creates the negative pressure to fill and expand lungs. The diaphragm moves up when exhaling.

From a retired Respiratory Therapist and RN your description is pretty good. To really get into it would end up being too much for most people, especially the gas exchange in lungs..in Kyokushin, we breathe on blocks and exhale with defense techniques. I have not finished viewing but I want to know the real way breathing is done in Uechi Ryu Sanchin. I'll continue and see the rest. ☮️ 🥋🥋🥋

Hello 👋 sensei, OSs Well, thank you, I have learned a lot from your videos. I have been following you for long time now, and your videos help me a lot. So I will not be fair to you, if I don't comment and say at least thank you. All your videos are appreciated, keep it up. Mark it in your book 📚 that am also your number one fan, all the way from the smiling coast of west Africa The Gambia. OSs 🥋

Thank you Sensei. This was my "first" virtual training and it was fun! I do run out of breath and I knew that my breathing techique is faulty. Almost fainted once after a Jion, when doing Kanku dai usually my movements are getting weak by the end of the kata (tobi geri before the end...).

Don't worry, nobody understands how the diaphragm works. At least you didn't insist people can activate their diaphragm on purpose.

Sensei Kanazawa always put extreme emphasis on breathing. Even part of adding a deep breathing after each exercise (before rei). You should check out his kokyu exercises.

Im sorry but i have to make a correction, the diaphragm moves down when you breath in and up when you breath out, not viceversa, im not saying the technique you explain doesn't work but the explanation at the beginning is most definitely wrong.

Breathing is from the stomach, not grom the lungs . It starts from the tanden, and ends there as it must be with every technique.

There's alot of power and sharp precision to be gained from breathing this way when doing forms, but when you do 8 forms in a row you'll be a little gassed...which means you're doing it right. Often I see students ready to go for a 3 mile run after doing 8 forms which means they didn't do it right LOL. I'm sweating bullets at that point.

The comments about how the diaphragm contracts and relaxes are correct. But as I was thinking of a good way to describe how this works regardless. Or a different way of describing it. I had this idea. So think of your body/ diaphragm as a fist. As you breath out the fist tightens, and brings the body down, as you breathe in, the hand opens and is relaxed. That is how the diaphragm works with this! As you breath in it relaxes and allows you to go up, as you breath out it contracts and pulls the body down. From your friendly anatomy nerd lol😊

Try opening and closing the hand as you breathe in and out. It helps to get a better mental picture of what’s happening in there.
