One feature that the Key 37 has, that most people aren't talking about is the ability to control/transmit midi over usb, while in standalone mode. It's old tech, but the modern line of MPCs haven't been able to do this until the release of the MPC Key 37. That means you can simply connect to and control your DAW with a usb cable only. No need for a midi interface or usb to midi cable.

Yea, that's definitely something I've done before. For a while, I made up my mind that I'd focus on improving other skills like lyrical and sampling and not concern myself with the keys. If your goals are in other areas, this is fine, but it's definitely going to keep you from growing theory knowledge.

That's what's up man! I'm always hyped when people start learning this stuff especially coming from hip-hop production. I used to play by ear and use midi to guess my way in Logic, then at 26 I decided to start with lessons and it was a game/life changer. I'm a full time jazz/r&b/gospel keys player and piano teacher now. I'm just some dude on the net, but if you ever get curious and want some one on one pointers, I do Zoom lessons.

The MPK Mini Plus has chords and scales. That being said, I have a Key 61 and never subscribed to the Idea that it was just an MPC with keys attached. Using the modes in the MPK Mini Plus is not as seemless as on the Key 61 but I really haven’t used it much on either. I use the MPC One and Live II with various controllers but seem to get more done with keys on the Key 61. I wouldn’t worry about detractors. You can’t make someone who doesn’t get it, get it. Keep enjoying doing what you’re doing and let them do what they do.

I feel it on the chord scale mode. For 10 years I been trying to figure out what chords and keys are and never understood it. Def been playing by ear for a while but now that most midi keyboards are getting advanced compared to when I started (Summer of 2016). Also the Daws are getting crazier! Ableton Live 12 is insane compared to what I started on in Ableton Live 9/ FL Studio 11. Love how things are becoming more beginner friendly! Wouldn’t want beginners to struggle like I did when I started anything to help anybody make the sounds they hear in the mind!

We needed a 76 key MPC X SE! Mpc One Plus and a cheap midi controller is still a better option IMHO than this 37 key. Arturia 49 key Essential and my MPC ONE PLUS was almost the same price and I have a tone of real time controllers, which truly blows away 37 IMHO. Also, I have more memory! What I would buy is a $3,000 dollar Key 76 MPC X SE including the 16 OLED QLINK KNOBS. I guess this for someone who is just getting into MPC. Good first board with it being pretty portable. I rather a power house though. I hate buying the MPC X Se knowing AKAI will most likely do an 76 or 88 workstation next year.

  • @LiftedNoise

    @LiftedNoise

For some people it would be. In my current situation and limited space the key 37 is ideal over any other larger models they might have released. Most companies just do the 61 76 and 88 simultaneously but for some reason akai hasn't approached it in that way. It all really comes down to preference and studio space and an individual circumstance that leads their perspective on what's better. I think an 88 key with the X SCREEN QLINKS AND IO would be amazing but I wouldn't buy one where I'm at right now in my life.

  • @Curious_Skeptic

@LiftedNoise I can see that view. Many companies are hitting botique and mini keyed hardware. I think the oled qlink is in itself a major feature set offered uniquely in the akai x. It's the feature that has me willing to spend three times a mpc one. I can't be alone in seeing the time savings and creative edge of more hands on instant access controls. I get the market is very split between affordability/compact vs higher end, feature rich premium. Akai has done an amazing job at good, better, best business model. Roland is a little ahead still in that area. Fantom 6 vs fantom 06 and if needed, endless botique and even this anamzing little sd-04 all in one. Korg is stuck in the past imho. Same flagship, cut off at the bxlls.

Akai or should i say inmusic know what they're doing when it comes to making money, its almost like there isnt a flag ship device anymore and in order to access all the unique new software/hardware upgrades you have to buy every single MPC that comes out. How can they justify giving the key 37 a hardware upgrade that the key 61 doesnt have?

Are you referring to the direct usb midi hardware add?

@@LiftedNoise That's right, it's strange that their flagship keyboard which has not been out for 2 years yet is missing a key feature that the 37 has, I could be wrong but isn't there atleast one more feature that the 37 has that the 61 is lacking? I know the 61 has the touch strip and the ability to add a SSD but still it kinda sucks that the new addition to the lineup has something the 61 don't🤔 Maybe I'm being too greedy, I might be experiencing some GAS symptoms lol

@R.G.777. yea it's weird. Only thing I can think of is the dedicated chord button but I believe there's a button combo for the 61 now. GAS is innevatible just stay productive and you should be good. For me though without any added feature just the size is an appealing feature for me. I mean the added feature doesn't make a break any mpc. You can do the midi thing with a usb to midi cable for unde $50 if it's really necessary to you. But yea they are smart business people. There's a good reason to own more than 1 MPC and many people justify it. I'd never knock anyone buying more tools but just try to stay productive vs trying to learn no gear.

@@LiftedNoise wise words! To be honest I'm probably not going to use that feature but I do have FL studio which I have used maybe once and it's food to have that added function. Do you have a link to that cable? I might get one, better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it

Dude if you just now saying that and figuring that out you slow because in reality all you have to do is put a midi keyboard with your MPC and there’s your key 37

I am slow..to anger. Praise Ya 🙏 i was making a joke. Don't allow yourself to be provoked to insult people because I was making light of a conversation not directed at anyone personally, that shouldn't be an argument. It's an equal value proposition. If you have an MPC ONE, it makes sense, but if you don't, then choose whatever fits your situation.

@ajmiller66 you haven't explained what makes it a toy. It works just like any other MPC so what makes this different?

@@LiftedNoise it’s made of cheap plastic for one. It takes a minute to load plugins, it’s red for a reason. It’s not a professional machine. I own the X, X SE, REN, Live 2, and Key 61. This 37 comes nowhere close to the quality of What I already have. I had the 37 for less than an hour and I had nothing but issues. Wouldn’t update via WiFi, every button I touched in controller mode it played a note…. I am very disappointed with Akai but then again. They made an entry level MPC for the parents who said 2400.00 for the X SE was too much

@ajmiller66 thanks for elaborating. The build feels about the same as the mpc one. Sounds like you never tried it and I agree both feel a bit cheap because they are super light. You think it's some type of cheaper plastic vs the other mpcs? I'm just thinking the live 2 feels more sturdy because of the weight the battery and speaker give it. I also have had issues with connecting for wifi updates and doing trials on plugins... I've had those types of issues with my other MPCs though.. so that's not related to the build quality but some server or software problem they need to workout. While I do wish the build felt sturdier, the key 37 still works just like all my other MPCs and the added keyboard environment is something I really appreciate.
