    I bought the power topper from home depot. I find it fine with any of the compact m18 batteries for comfort. The 1.5ah m18 lasts about the same runtime as the 2.0ah m12 since that 1.5ah is at 18v and gets dropped to 12v. Anything bigger than the compact batteries isn't comfortable at all to wear

    Have you used it with the 3.0 m12 battery? Is it much of a difference to the 1.5 m12 batter? I'm going to buy one battery was curious which you'd go.

    So much better to just get a few cp 3.0 and stick and extra one in the pocket on the other side and have one two three in your vehicle or wherever ready to go. Or just wear layers and run it on medium and get way more runtime. I have all these adapters and batteries and don’t like anything over the cp 3.0. I’ve used a m18 2.0 and even 3.0 HO and it’s just not worth it. The watt hours listed on the battery aren’t more. Will you get more runtime, yes but not enough more to want to deal with the size.

  • @civildiscourse2000

    @civildiscourse2000

    I don't understand your comment "the watt hours listed on the battery aren't more," especially since you immediately admitted that you do get more run time with the M18. The math is pretty simple and the battery ratings reflect this exactly. E.g. 2 Ah x 12 V = 24 Wh, which is what is printed on the battery, and 2 Ah x 18 V = 36 Wh, which again is what is printed on the battery. (Note that these are all "nominal" values.) Due to some unavoidable inefficiency in the buck converter within the M18 "Power Source" (worst product name ever, BTW) you don't get exactly 50 % more energy out of the M18 combination at 12 V. However it's pretty close according to some thorough tests on YT that I was searching for when I ran across this vid. My buddy only had a screencap to show me of the charted results. I looked specifically at the 2Ah comparison and it was very close to 50 % greater using the M18 combo. (Edit: and of course right away I found the vid: kzread.info/dash/bejne/YmqBj7Cbot3aiNI.htmlsi=ErQ2OFWHtVliGftN) Now if you don't feel the extra weight is worth it, that's perfectly understandable. That's a subjective judgement. I strongly doubt that I'll be chucking a 9 or 12 Ah M18 in my pocket. Gawd, the weight of my overalls with the tools I normally have on me is plenty for this old man. I haven't experimented with some of my smaller M18's yet but if power is available for charging I think I'd lean towards having more 12V batteries on the go and cut down on carried weight.

    AND IT SNOWS. Congrats on your 6' snowmageddon :) , and yes, in buffalo, m18 ROI is ok because you are at risk. Where we want strictly comfort, and sometimes heat for safety, the M12 3.0 they just came out with 2022, is maybe the way to go. I have a handful of the 1.5, 2.0 and now 3.0 M12, because the M18 can hit you hard if you jump and land, etc., very heavy.

    No. The M18 "Power Source" (which is better described as a DC-to-DC adapter or converter) drops the voltage to 12V which is what the heated gear is designed for. Depending on the battery you choose, you can get more time but not higher power dissipation aka "more heat."

  • @toeslider92
    @toeslider922 жыл бұрын

    Do the electronics in the jacket regulate the voltage so the jacket sees 12 volts even with an 18v battery, or does it run hotter with the m18 batteries?

  • @YTOG.

    @YTOG.

    Most electronic devices will only pull the max amount of power it can handle. Electricity doesn't get pushed into a device from a powersource. That's why it's called "draw" because device will draw power from a power source. I did some research on it a while back because I was worried about using a 30 watt charger for my cell phone. It only affects the time it takes to charge. If you are using a power source that is much larger than what the phones Max draw is then it will just draw power at the maximum amount the entire time. So if a device like a cell phone only draws 15 watts but you're using a 30 watt charger, it will charge as fast as it possibly can at a stedy 15 watts Max. Now if you use a 15-watt charger it may not pull the constant 15 watts the entire time so it will charge actually slower.... at least I think that's how it works anyway 🤷

  • @Fade_Modded

    @Fade_Modded

    @@YTOG. you’re correct about current but voltage is voltage. A 12v 10a device will pull 10a even if you hook it up to a 12v 30a power source. If you hook it up to a 24V source it could blow up depending on what it is.

    @@Fade_Modded YES! This helps me figure out my heated visor question ("15V, 2 amp max"). Now I know what that means. Now if I could just find an M12 battery holder adapter to RCA ... lol But Thanks.

  • @civildiscourse2000

    @civildiscourse2000

    I know this is an ancient question but for the sake of more recent viewers... The M18 "Power Source" does the voltage conversion. It has two outputs - a 5V USB A connector for charging a phone or whatever, and a "pin and barrel" connector that outputs 12V for the heated gear or whatever. The jacket doesn't have to regulate voltage, and chances are, it can't. If you fudged an adapter to use 18V directly, I would be surprised if you didn't get over double the power dissipated (since power is proportional to voltage squared) and that just might be enough to get you in trouble since it's not designed for that. The little indicator LED's, their current-limiting resistors and the switching electronics might get uncomfortable as well depending on their ratings.
