THIS might be our favorite place in Guatemala... (Quetzaltenango is underrated!)
In this video, we travel from San Juan La Laguna in Lake Atitlan, Guatemala over to Quetzaltenango, or, XELA. We also take you through our first impressions in Xela and show you some of the quick things to do in the area :)
We started off taking a 2 hour shuttle from Panajachel over to Quetzaltenango and arriving around night time. The next morning we woke up and started exploring and getting to know the city. We have so many cool things and videos coming up and we can’t wait to show y’all! Quetzaltenango and the surrounding area are amazing!
Howdy! We're Jenna & Andrew and we create travel vlogs (right now we are in Central America!). With this channel we hope to do more than just the typical bucket list. We set out to better understand the culture, language, and most importantly the people of the places we travel to. Our channel is designed to give a unique perspective and knowledge of each country, and our honest and true experience.

Oh wow indeed it is! I bet that is a long drive away (at least a very scenic one I would guess!) Thank you for watching 😊🇬🇹
Xela is by far the prettiest city of Guatemala, prettier than Antigua. The mountains, the views, the cold wheather...there ain't much to do some say? Just wander the uphill streets and you won't want to leave!

Agreed! We love Antigua but the atmosphere in Xela was definitely different and it felt more authentic! There's also SO much to do! We want to go back and do some more hiking :)
Hey Jen and Drew , wonderful adventure. So many beautiful places to see . Have a lovely day:)

Cool video. I loved it! Be known that Xela has pretty strong ties with Europe, hence its architecture. That was and still the deal, the fusion of Mayans, mestizos and Europeans living together in a "underrated" town where you can still keep your roots while living among a community that'll pamper you and will tell you ¡Buen provecho! before and after you eat.
I totally agree! It's beautiful!

Hahaha, I caught the same thing.
Hahahaha! I lived for two years in Xela. You guys definitely went to the most touristy places (not that there's anything bad with that, ahaha). I recommend checking out Kuitos (the tacos there are divine), Cajolá (say to a taxi driver "por la rotunda por dónde esta este Utz Ulew [Ootz Oo Lay Oo])" and El Panorama (just for the view). Oh yeah, the taxi driver said, “¿Y cuántos (días) piensan estar por acá?” but you interpreted it as “And what do you think about it here?” 8:59

Is it true that the altitude is too high for older people because of altitude sickness affecting blood pressure? How's the infrastructure? Did the apartment have a washing machine?
@JourneywithJenandDrew

Im not sure about the high altitude affecting older people! But the infrastructure was good - similar to other larger central american cities. The apartment did have a good washing machine :) haha

We LOVED Xela! Absolutely - it depends on what you are looking for. In terms of weather and affordability it was great! However it is a city and if you are looking for more of a quiet escape you may want to go farther out from the city.

Funny couple indeed cheers mate!
Guatemala once was a country that included Chiapas y Tabasco now Mexico down to Costa Rica including Belice. But the Mexicans took that land from us, after you gringos took California, Texas, New Mexico and so on from them. Then the brits came and they took Belice from us, and then every state became a little bitty country. Now this is where Xela comes into place, after all that division, the state of Xela became a single country for some time, it became at the time a very prosperous country, and after seeing the good example given by the gringos, brits and mexicans, we the guatemalans conquered the country of Quetzaltenango, yes, now it is ours.
Respect goes a long way. Very rude to walk into a building with a closed sign. Let's go in anyway, bumped fists, haha. Except its not funny. It's ignorant and disrespectful. And the reason Americans have a bad reputation as travelers. Be an adult.
