    This is a very good learning series. So many of my games look like this. Greeding items, not scouting, playing HS units for too long, and not optimizing team comp/headliner are some of the biggest mistakes in this game. The level 9 greed was pretty smart actually, but lost too much HP with no combat augments.

    The discussion about how to play stage 2 in the first 12 minutes is great. I'm also new to being masters and around the same lp, but would have played that stage quite a bit differently, likely with plenty of my own mistakes, but different ones. There were multiple times in this video where I paused and considered a decision which helped me decide on something I likely wouldn't have in game (whether optimal or not). It's definitely interesting seeing reviews of other players around my rating with different weaknesses than myself. Some of the commentary backed up what I would have done, while other parts didn't. Also, the question about what the purpose of greeding around 20 min in is great; that's something I think I suffer more from that the person being reviewed. I would have made the same decision not to roll on 4-1 they did, but understand why it's wrong (at least without lobby knowledge). When I paused and made that decision, I wasn't even thinking about level 9... I just didn't consider how much damage that decision could make to the board and hp total compared to rolling 1 round later with only a few more gold. I think later game decisions like that are definitely one of my greater leaks. I think my decision-making there is much worse than either yours or the player being reviewed. I've definitely noticed a tempo difference so far in masters, but hadn't been punished for that sort of greed before. I can't imagine playing the Akali sell at 22 min myself, but when I paused there just couldn't decide if it was reasonable... they have a lot of hp, but I'd prefer a pretty guaranteed good placement myself. It just looked like it was way too big a sacrifice for my playstyle. I had plenty of other thoughts while watching, but they were more specific to my own gameplay and likely errors. Thanks for starting this series; I think it's very helpful to see reviews of both comparable and better players than ourselves.

    I don't think I've ever seen someone play so greedy, and then also be so bad at pivoting (for this ELO). You have to know your own strengths and weaknesses as a player! If you know that pivoting into a level 9 board isn't your strong suite, don't greed for a level 9. I personally know I'm relatively bad at pivoting good lvl 9 boards, but I usually have good early-games and decent level 8 boards, so I choose my augments accordingly. I want to either win early hard and then bleed into top4 or I play for a fast8 board and get a top2-3. My Double-up mate is an amazing level 9 player, and he knows how to pivot from almost any board with almost any shop-rolls, so he's playing a lot more greedy and with way more focus on econ. Usually that means he goes either 7/8 or 1/2, whereas I usually place more in the 3-6 range. In the end we climb relatively evenly, so I wouldn't say one strategy is stronger than the other, but if I played his strategy or he played mine, we'd both lose a lot of LP. Obviously, if you want to play tournaments and place first, you need to take more risks, but for regular climbing playing safer may be better suited to your playstyle.

    The balanced budget choice was actually really good in the end, Frodan even said the greed paid off massively for it since he was still healthy, level 9, and a ton of gold. His issue is that he has no clue which units are actually good outside of knowing to click 5 cost units lol. Passing up on emo Poppy, EDM Zed, Crowd Diver Zed, or Bruiser Zac, etc for chosen are obvious but he also just didn't prioritize the Zed or Zac whatsoever which makes know sense. You already have an Illaoi **why** would you play around 4 guardian instead of picking up those Zacs and playing around 4 bruiser for your frontline?

    While the early game wasn't perfect, everything up to lvl 9 worked out and had some really smart plays. This player was in a strong spot, but the roll down at level 9 was horrible, no offense. If you can clean that up (strong board, pivot out of Heartsteel, recognize dmg/tank needs and actually utulise the headliner lol), you can easily go top4 and climb.

    That choice of prismatic augments is tough. I don't think you could go wrong with any of them depending on your long term game plan. I would have gone Shopping Spree or Spoils for that lv8 roll down with a tonne of gold (or early lv8 roll down with the econ advantage). I've done the 2-5 switch to a 2-cost headliner before (provided the 2-cost headliner is the same as my current one, so like a tank for a tank or dps for a dps) and it's helped keep my win streak alive through stage 2 and part of stage 3. The no roll down at lv8 and being relatively healthy was really surprising. Could have easily gone into a 7-KDA Ahri+Akali board to get through stages 4 and 5 and then go lv9 when people have died. I really appreciated the analysis for this game as I'm at the same level (Masters 150ish LP) and this helped me identify what I need to do to get better.

    Scouting is an area where I really struggle. I will scout and gain very little information other than what comps are contested. What is a good way to get better at evaluating board strength when scouting. What are some other things that we should be looking for when scouting? Or positioning tips when facing 3-4 possible boards.

  • @VortexMagus

    @VortexMagus

    3 ай бұрын

    The most important information you can get when you scout is where to put your fattest tank. You want their carry caught on your fattest, most itemized tank, so you want to place your tank where it will get hit first or second by the carry. Usually a ranged carry is in a corner of the board and a melee carry is on the edge of the board, so knowing which side to put your tank on to catch carry aggro is important. --- Another important thing that scouting helps with is identifying how weak your board is relative to other boards. This guy greeded way too hard because he didn't have a good sense of how strong his board was relative to everyone else. He lost two big win streaks that were salvageable if he had spent more on his board and slammed another item or two. He also kept thresh as his headliner which I think was a large mistake since his frontline was reasonably solid already and if he had scouted, he likely would have realized he really needed another carry aside from ez.

    This dude literally shows you how bad the game really is right now. If you said this was a gold-plat elo player I would believe it. But im not really surprised this guy is masters, since headliner mechanic is just gambling. Basically every game u level up 8 (sometimes 9 but usually its a throw) , roll down and pray to hit ezreal chosen in 2 3 rolls for top2. If you can hit it under 10 rolls you go top4, otherwise you go 8th. Remember, every lobby has 2 3 ezreal players. Anyways, if you repeat this process long enough you can be in masters too. Ggs guys, best set ever. Im pretty sure that this guy forced ahri everygame when the set first started, then tf, then karthus now ezreal. You change the champs when nerfs/buffs come in but the gameplay is always the same: Level to 8 -> roll. You only need to know which comp to force. Which you dont even have to memorise since there are lots of websites to tell you which comp is op right now. By the way, you dont have to level to 8 every game but other route is more rng dependant. Even more rng dependant than first one I mean 😂. You can get 3 stars 1 cost units like olaf, jinx, annie at 2-1 because, guess what, headliner mechanic. That also lets you climb masters easily too. If you hit at 3-1 you can go top4, otherwise you go 8th. Same with 2 and 3 costs. With 2 costs, if you get it 3 starred 3-1 top2, 4-1 top 4, otherwise 8th. With 3 costs, 4-1 top2, 5-1 top4, otherwise ff. I was masters around 100lp but stopped playing ranked. I cant dude.
