This Major Change By The King Has Left Windsor Residents Upsets

King Charles has broken a 200-year-old tradition at Windsor Castle, leaving local residents very upset.
Previously residents who live near Windsor Castle were allowed free access to the historic site a tradition which dates back to 1895.
However, as of June 1st, 2024 the residents will be charged for their visit.
The Royal Collection Trust will implement a discounted fee, for residents with a Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead Advantage Card.

Misleading title. King Charles was not the one to make this change. He doesn't own Windsor, the Royal Collection Trust is in charge of the castle. The RCT made the decision.

@catpatrick3838 That's correct. King Charles doesn't own Windsor Castle. The up take of the castle needs to be paid for, and I think this is fair. Plus, it will still bring visitors into Windsor and surrounding areas.

The upkeep of these places is phenomenal. Locals will still get in for half price and kids up to 17 still get in free, so what are they moaning about? Spare a thought for those of us who travel long distances to visit these places, have to pay for parking and petrol on top of the full entrance fee. Some people don't know when they've got it made.

That only benefits local business owners unless those business owners make community contributions that benefit everyone. Until you live in a town that is packed with tourists everyday, many times being annoying, crowding the place, and asking daft questions, you have no idea. It's wonderful for those who own the shops, for the residents, not so much. But I digress as Windsor folk need to speak for themselves. Also, I'm sure some of the business owners are not even Windsor residents.

Not everyone there owns a business, those who do own one or more do not all live there, and they do put up with the annoying tourists which they don't actually have to be so lovely to. It is a good call on King Charles to make certain that historical and beautiful home (business) continues to stand for many more generations. After watchimg the daily debacle with the tourists and the Kings Life Guard, who can't keep their grubby hands off the horses or the guards, and get mad and argue when told to stop, I can only imagine the mess at Windsor. People feel entitled now, when they are paying admission itvwill get worse. The alternative is to shut everything down to the public. I don't know what the KLG gets paid, but its not nearly enough for the bs I've watched them deal with.

Most residents, in any town with historic venues, are the least likely individuals to visit the venues due to proximity and procrastination. The charging of an entrance fee is often used to pay for upkeep, security, repairs, and utilities. To expect the Royal Family to shoulder the entire cost simply because you live in town is ludicrous. Most businesses are making money off the tourists in one form or another. You don't want to welcome the tourists? Move to someplace no one wants to visit. Problem solved.

Windsor is part of the Crown Estate. It is not maintained personally by the RF. Tourists can be annoying, not everyone owns businesses, and not everyone who has a business there lives there. These people make up a very small fraction of those who visit the castle every year. Most of them are not going there every year to begin with. All your ideas about it are basically off.

I'd like to hear what the Windsor residents have to say. They didn't even have the journalistic integrity to ask some of them and film their answers.

Well, a few major historical places are around my house, I pay to visit them and that's normal. Their town benefits from the tourists, they shouldn't be compensated.

Your “neighbor’s” property is not your property and you have no rights to it. The change does not stop the privilege that has been extended to neighbours just restricts it from being taken advantage of.

You're Majesty, I humbly bring to your attention a concern regarding the horses under your care. It has come to my notice that some horses have been biting people, and I am deeply worried about the safety and well-being of both the horses and the individuals involved. I kindly implore you to consider taking measures to address this issue, as I fear that someone may be seriously hurt if no action is taken. I understand the importance of the royal stables and the cultural significance of the horses, but the safety of all individuals involved must be the top priority.

The signs clearly say that they bite and don't touch them! Furthermore, this is not the Royal Family's channel, it's not affiliated with them and even if it was, Charles would not be reading the comments. Also, it's "Your Majesty", not "My Majesty" as that would be calling yourself King instead of him.

Someone has to pay for the castle's upkeep. If tourists have to dig deep into their pockets to visit Windsor, maybe the locals can have discounted price.

I have to wonder, how often do the locals actually visit Windsor? I imagine it’s like any other local landmark, attraction, where you know it’s there, but never, or rarely, go. So why is this a big deal other than it’s a change? They still get a good discount. Then again, if the locals make up so little a percentage of the visitors, then why implement the change in the first place?

Having sung with most of the Chapel Choir and their wives, there is a strong connection between the Staff and Town, much as there was between his father and the various Fellowships ensconced in the Lower Bailey, one of which, the backroom advisers who kept her late Majesty better briefed than the Prime Minister, included my own father.
