it's not about consumerism, just like power consumption. this is not how it works, how the product is made and how the power is generated is what counts. in Apple's case, this are by far the most environmental firendly devices on the planet. because of the insane numbers, literally most sold laptop of all time, the efficiency is literally the best in the industry, so much that repairing pollutes more than simply getting a new one, it is that efficient. so, we need to differentiate when talking about the environment. whats super bad is the windows world, plastic, short life span, low usage, extremely vast product catalog, all different. macs are so much more friendly its not even worth to talk about, it is that far ahead compared to the rest. people literally use them for decades, as seen here often. have a nice day

Hot take - I think this gen of Macbook Air is one of the best computers ever made. It doesn't have the best screen or the best performance, but it just works and continues to work. Pair that with the fact that the case design was revolutionary at the time, the keyboard is wonderful, it was thin light and it came in at a great pricepoint and you have a computer that is a pleasure to use, even 12 years after it was introduced. As Luke said, 50 trillion people bought one. I still use my 2012 Macbook Air (i7, 8gb) daily for basic tasks and it's great. That's a 10 year old computer! Crazy. Advice for anyone who wants to buy one of these - GET ONE WITH 8GB of RAM! It's essential in 2022 and beyond.

I have one - it’s pretty awful. The keyboard is good, the screen is decent, but doing literally anything other than opening Safari will basically kill the battery and overheat like crazy. With a brand new battery, I get 5-6 hours battery just browsing the internet. Plus, even with the 8gb version, which I have, I have around 80% usage the entire time. Other than it being a good deal, there’s really no reason to buy it.

Hey Luke, After viewing this video about buying a MacBook Air at 1/12th the price of a new one, I looked on Ebay and, sure enough, there were many to select from. I decided to spend an extra hundred bucks and just bought a MacBook Air 13” Early 2014 model with 8Gb RAM and a 256Gb SSD, in excellent condition, including the original Apple packaging, for only $198. I’m an Apple collector and mainly bought this to add to my collection. But as you say, it’s a great all-around laptop and I’ll definitely pack it on trips because it’s so light and capable. I like your KZread channel and watch it a lot. Thanks for all you do. Keep up the good work. John M.

Luke- just so you know, the iFixit tool box cover acts as a screw storage when flipped over. Once flipped over, you will see squared-off dividers to help you separate screws as you wish. Really helps from accidentally having a random screw sliding under your computer and scratching the shit out of it.

Im guessing this is a cpu issue and could not be fixed easily As much as I liked the laptop I just couldn’t deal with the instability anymore so I upgraded to the 14 inch base model MacBook Pro

I love my 2015 MacBook Air 13". Was my daily driver in college, still my daily driver today, though it needs a little pick-me-up in the form of a battery and SSD upgrade. Once I do that, I plan to use this computer up until they stop releasing security updates for it. Even then, it's still gonna see some use as maybe a media server and a retro gaming machine.

Just wanna say, great video! I recently bought a good condition MBA early 2015 with 8G of ram for my teenage son. The computer works just fine for all daily tasks on Monterey, the battery had 384 cycles, and can still hold for 6-7 hours of normal use. Best of all, I paid 170 Canadian$ for it, that’s about 130 USD, great price for a capable machine, I’m a happy camper

I gave this same model to my mom, with it acting like a mirror of her data on her iPhone via iCloud syncing. She basically can do all the "big screen" stuff on it at home, and use her phone when she is mobile. It can't run any OS newer than High Sierra, so the 4GB RAM is still sufficient. But the 2013 8GB/512GB MBA that replaced it as my spare "kitchen PC" struggles with only 8GB, because Mac OS is several versions newer. I've thought about wiping it and starting fresh, with just signing into iCloud and downloading the top 5-6 apps that I use, rather than having restored my 16" MBP's TimeMachine apps and user account which has slowed it down.

I've seen some electronic specialists upgrade the ram on these to 16GB. If that became a wider option, I could see these being extended. The one issue is the 2012 versions (IIRC) are on their last viable OSX release, so it'll be Linux after that...

You can install Monterey with opencore legacy patcher and no it's not buggy or underperforming. I'm playing Fortnite and doing video editing with opencore installed monterey and it does not differ to native Mojave. But yes, linux is a better alternative since macOS sux.

I've installed Linux Mint Ubuntu and Debian editions on 2017 and 2010 Airs. So far so good. All the hardware seems to work. it was a little flaky when unplugging an external monitor, but it eventually figured it out. Works even with 2Gig as long I don't multi-task much. Bluetooth on the 2010 model is almost unusable, but that's true even under MacOS. Stick with the 2017 model for the best performance and it has USB 3.0 for faster installation. Honestly, I'm planning for the future. Google, Microsoft, Apple and the rest all make their money by making me the product. I'm getting really tired of all the tracking, advertising, simple things turning into monthly subscriptions and forced obsolescence. I see Linux in my future unless these trends change.

I have a friend who is an IT guy. He just gave me several items that were being retired from service. One of them was a 2011 MacBook Air. Now it's the Core2Duo version, and only has 2GB of RAM, but I really like it. The person who was using it had installed Manjaro on it. It was used, and it's still in good shape. I'm quite impressed with it. The weight, the battery life (considering the battery is over 10 years old), the keyboard, and more are still really good. Good enough that I briefly considered keeping it (I am selling it). I do want to buy a newer one to use at home. I like it better than the Lenovo Flex 15 that my company issued to me.

I have the MacBook air early 2014 version. I believe the only reason google chrome or safari lags consistently when trying to search is because of the new updates I put on it. The battery in it I need to fix but have been dragging it. But you're right the MacBook airs are unbelievably fast. Mine is very fast and I love it, but I'm giving it to a friend and maybe will sell my 2017 iMac (base model) to get a 13-inch MacBook pro. This is a great video btw!

I currently use my MB Air (early 2015) and still LOVE IT! it's soo light, very easy to carry and has 2 usb ports and an sd card reader. I just wish I would've gotten the highest spec one at the time so I could keep using it for another 2 years or so. It's still runs fantastically for everyday tasks and even coding, but it's a tad bit slow, if I have more than say 15 tabs, which is to be expected for a 7 year old machine with a 1.6 Gz intel Core i5 and JUST 4 GB of ram.

That's my boy! Mid-2013 MacBook Air, bought stock with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage in late 2013 for university. First ever Mac and first laptop, coming from a family Win7 desktop, it was a shock how good and fast it felt. In retrospect, I've been really lucky buying a Mid-2013 instead of a Mid-2012. Upgraded a couple years ago with a 512GB Sabrent NVMe, it still does the job for general usage, even if in 2022 4GB of RAM are surely few. Still supported for Big Sur and will be until fall of 2023, marking TEN years of security updates. Nuts. Monterey also very easily doable with Open Core Legacy Patcher and still some hope for Ventura. Collin aka dosdude1 has recently performed RAM upgrades for MacBooks of these era, even 16GB are possibile... who knows, maybe one day... :)
