This Louis Vuitton Wallet is made with PAPER?!
A customer sent in an old Louis Vuitton wallet for us to take apart and rebuild into a nice new wallet. We decided to take apart the old Louis Vuitton wallet on camera and explore just how this famous fashion house makes their carry goods. What we found might be a little surprising!

The brand got too big and they've inflated their prices as much as possible which makes their items more "exclusive". People buying LV are doing it mostly for the brand name, pretty sure many would admit, and there are brands that use the same materials or even higher quality ones for a fraction of the price (although to be fair often their designs aren't very attractive or interesting). I guess once you have enough money you don't care if it's overpriced, you just buy it
The wallet you made for me is top quality! (billfold with blue leather). Your work is better than LV. 👍

LV has a date code inside that shows the year and week of the year the piece was made. No serial number identifying info. I always wish you showed the date code because I would love to see how long the wallet lasted if that makes sense.

I’d never use paper in a fine leather product. The filler material used by myself and other leather crafters is bonded leather, which is leather fibers bonded together with glue, and even that should never be structural.
Yours is the quality one! I purchased 10 or 15 real leather wallets at flea markets and none of them are of a famous brand, all are high quality made by small companies. And I paid one or two euros for every single one....

Hahahahahaha, he need to hide these videos first
In my younger days, I'd save for ages just to be able to afford a nice leather bag and after experiencing the deterioration of those bags and realising that they were full of cardboard I was so very disappointed. I can make my own leather bags now so I'll never have to experience paper in my bags again. But seeing you deconstruct an LV wallet even though I knew the surface was a canvas, I'm so glad that I only purchase their coin purse because it has no fillers just canvas but for the price I paid, I could have bought a few high-end leather punches lol
I suspect the lighter paper is so the dark piece doesn't show through the canvas. It is more for keeping it bright than to be much structurally. Like choosing a proper primer for a base coat when painting.

Wow, super interesting!
Awesome loved it, great insight. Can't wait to see what comes of the shell in the next video.
This makes me appreciate styles like what you do when it comes to leather wallets
The blue color is indicative of a chrome tanned leather. This also explains the lack of a patina. This it probably a split with an artificial finish on it.
Really looking forward to the next video.

Thanks for your video now I know I make my own wallet with the LV pure leather. Thanks man appreciate you.
I made a few very small items with some LV fabric. I was amazed by some of the 'construction' methods ! I had them on Etsy, till they pulled the ads saying I violated Etsy policy. Guess thats part of the 'cease and desist' orders. Enjoyed the video, never thought about dissecting one the way you did, to study the construction and materials. !
With how much they charge for the wallets, I would have expected more than cardboard.

Ooo no 😱😱😱😭😭👍👍Excelente esa investigación 👍👍
they probably use the softer stiffener on the inside to dampen the sound of the coins. on the harder stiffener it would sound "cheap". maybe?
Thank you for doing a video like this. It is something you almost never see. LV has a high end that most of us will just never see in the wild, this LV wallet is not that. This example is everything I've come to expect from the high end mass market. As much as others seem to think the things you are pointing out are bad. For example a bonded leather product or the paper divider. I don't see these as low quality, just low cost. The age of the wallet indicates that they are rather good quality materials. Yes you paid for a logo on your mass market item. Not for the highest end materials. Keep in mind a bespoke item of better quality would have been at the time more expensive. The enormous numbers of people that have converted a bespoke hobby into a side business or even primary income. Is the only reason that the masses can get a bespoke high end product for an affordable price. If not for the internet and social media none of these small supper high quality manufacturers would exist. LV isn't competing with them. If they were their products would have to cost 2-4 times what they do.
Sssshhhhhhhhh do you hear that some LV fan boy is crying. Great job as always but also very interesting.
Wonder if the thin paper is processed to prevent moisture, where the black material is not(thus the order of stacking). It’s always fun taking the wallets and purses apart. I have a few to cut and salvage
Отличная работа , коллега! А с все шью только из ткани...👌☺️
I feel like I've been bamboozled by LV. All that money for paper and cardboard.
Most expensive leather strap inside is also cardboard.. even a croc strap to make it looks bulky and more strength. I work in Hermes watches boutique.
what glue do you use. And good job on the wallet like your videos.
Bravo
Thanks for another interesting video. Question: Where did you purchase the all brass craft knife you are using???
@st3lslucy

He makes them.
I never bought these fashion items. I'd rather buy from a person that does stuff by hand. It's nicer, supporting a local business and you get to choose the leather you like. And the whole process is explained to you,you get to know what goes inside your item and you pay so much less
Bought a cardholder from LV in 2006. After a few months it just started breaking apart. Since then I never bought any wallet or cardholders from LV ever again. Their bags are so much better I do have a lot but wallet nope 😉
Could you look into doing a pattern for the MM voyager pouchette?
Could you do the same with a brand new one to see if their quality has improved?
Where did you get that big-handled brass hobby knife handle, though?

@@AlexanderMason1 Its either a counterfiet or not, either way you buy gucci for the name, not the quality to an extent.
many people think that by putting the price, they have quality but not at all, they only pay for the logo, morality to be made (or to be made) the bag, wallet or other object in good personalized leather will always cost cheaper than these junkies there;) advantages: they are exactly to your liking and in addition they will follow you for years
The reason their using the softer paper on the outside is so it would simulate a higher end material when your looking at it in the shop, which is what they care about really. how it wears in and how it lasts does not concern them. if starts feeling like crap after a few years than you would need to buy a new one which feeds in to the whole consumerism thing.
Is the “leather” something that is chromexcel maybe? The blue I though might come from the salts or whatever is used for raining??
@steakmann
3 жыл бұрын
The blue is common in chrome tanned leathers because of the chromium salts that are used to tan the leather itself. Chromexcel is combination tanned, meaning it is first chrome tanned and those greyish-blue hides are then vegetable tanned and also stuffed with lots of fats and waxes. A majority of leather goods (especially on the cheaper side) are chrome tanned nowadays because it is cheaper and faster than vegetable tanning, but considered of lower quality to a comparable vegetable tan (of course you can have poor quality vegetable tanned leather and high quality chrome tanned, chrome doesn't automatically mean low quality).
@thatHARVguy
3 жыл бұрын
@@steakmann To add, chrome tanned leather usually won't get thicker than 4-5 oz (?), and is used mainly for garment and upholstery, ie. jackets and furniture. Chrome tanned makes up 80%-90% of leather items out there.
I'm not surprised at all, because I have several lv bags snd wallets and all have some lousy stiching, after all, people make them and sometimes someone isn't having a good day and then your bag is not perfect lol

It is my understanding that the "blueness" you see in that leather is an indication of being chrome tanned.
I think the thinner paper is more absorbent like a blotting paper. Maybe to stop the thicker one from deforming if it gets wet??
I think this is a counterfeit LV product. The cheaper fakes made in east Asia are usually made this exact way. Your client may have been fooled or is not being truthful about where they acquired this wallet.
And next week the new wallet?? 🤔🤔😶😶😊😊😊😊
They just don't make them like they used to. High quality leather and good old fashion workmanship.
I'm thinking of sending you my LV monogram marine sack bag, that i'm mot using any longer. You can probably create 20 wallets that size ;-)
I had to buy a hammer 🔨 elsewhere was hoping to get you're ponder but had no info on when it will be out and $
People forget luxury does not equal quality
thanks to the internet we now know that Louis Vuitton is not a brand bought for quality, it is a brand bought to show status. But for the shocking prices I would expect better quality.

That super sharp X-acto knife is giving me anxiety 😳😳😳
1:59 the LV is cut off inside the wallet. Seam goes right through the bottom. I think this one's a little suspect on being real. That's like their #1 don't break rule.
Could be the leather split, not really paper. But the consistency is kind of. Similar.
That's some expensive paper! The black stuff looks like felt used on roof barrier. (Water proof!)
Interior made with...manila folders! Very expensive ones 🤣
Looks like this is just a revenge to LV for their licensing attack :)
The leather that they use is called cross grain leather. It’s a stamped leather.
How can I send my broken bag in so u can turn it into something new?
Someone please send him a men's Louis Vuitton bi-fold wallet so that he can tear it apart. 🙃 Oh, and so he can make something else with the signature LV canvas that is left..
👍
Try to do the burn test to confirm if it's leather or not.
This was really interesting. Yeah, not a fan of the “fillers/stiffeners”, such a cop out. There are people all over this country like you and me making quality products of actual leather not some, ground up and powdered leather mixed with glue, crap labeled “genuine leather”. What I don’t understand is how the cost of labour and material involved in assembling all of these extra layers versus just doing it properly (and respectfully)with one piece of leather is more advantageous? Sorry for the rant. Blessings and please keep doing what you’re doing.
這次做的我就比較有點在意,謝謝
It’s just an expensive piece of cardboard. This vid was pretty helpful, I knew there was some but not near this much junk inside lv
Maybe I'm in the minority here, but I don't mind my wallet to show signs of wear. Just like you don't mind your veg-tan to get patina. The paper seems to hold up as long as it is covered. And look at libraries, good paper can last a long time ;) We can always discuss the pricetag on designer brands, but looking at how it has hold up, compared to newer cheaper stuff, perhaps some of the price is okay. Especially now that you can re-use some of the material.
I don’t see the materials list
can you do bellroy?
if not cardboard, what do you suggest people use as stiffener? I thought it's quite normal to have those paper stiffeners (which are chemically treated to prevent fungus/mold).

Even though they cut corners on quality, it's expensive because of the labor costs and they don't use cheap labor. They employ well-paid French workers. Still shocking, the use of paper!

LV and a lot of other large luxury brands manufacturer their items in China, which are then finished in Italy, France, Spain, this allow these brands to claim that their items were made in places other than China. So, they do actually use cheap labor and cheap materials.

Yo - E - come on now, LV family and estates should be ashamed of themselves. I saw a girl on KZread reveal a bag and it cost $2,000.00.
