Those who are upset because you use a ham radio on CB. They should use all their efforts to fight the QRM generated by all these Chinese electronics ruining HAM and CB radio. These are the real threat, not a guy using a Ham radio on CB. Use your energy efficiently, not to bash other people who are not really causing QRM.

For local purpose, they are on vertical, as your bottom feed loop, this mean: You're on horizontal, that doesn't work very well toward your local's vertical. All you needed, mounted vertical pole to mount your feed and tuner on side-feed, that you be on vertical. But it will be directional, as you rotate it for best reception. As VHF loop is so small, that will able to fit it into most glove box in vehicle.

Mag-loop polarization is always in the plane of the loop. It does not make the slightest difference where around the loop is the feed point. As shown, the polarization is going to be vertical and the directionality will be figure-8 with nulls through the center of the loop.

Two years ago, I got myself one of these Wonderloop antennas. Actually, the Wonderloop is not a "real" magnetic loop -- those have a small coupling loop at one side of the circle and a high-voltage capacitor at 180° from the coupling loop. In contrast, this is more or less a Fuchs resonator (an LC circuit with a unun, used to end-feed a half-wave length antenna) that is connected to a short round wire instead of the normal EFHW wire of a Fuchs circuit. And well, yeah, the Wonderloop kinda works, but not great. Then I replaced the copper wire with a thin copper tube (1cm diameter, length about 2m) from a DIY store. This tube gave significantly better results, but it was still not great. Months later I bought a real magloop antenna, a Chameleon P-Loop. And that "real" magloop has a much, much, much better performance than the improved Wonderloop with the copper tubing albeit at a significantly higher price. Note that others claim that does not seem to be much of a difference performance-wise between those portable loops (Chameleon this and that, Alexloop, the 705 loop etc.), since they all have comparable technical data, and that sounds legit. To be honest, I'm not using the Wonderloop any longer, even with the copper tube; it was quite a disappointment.

I've recently seen 30w qrp mag loops, that are similar to the akexloop etc, but for less money than the Wonder loop. I'm right now trying to decide if to get (a) a cheap mag loop to use all round, at home and portable (around £90), or (b) a doublet antenna for my attic used with a mini-ant 30w qrp antenna as an atu, and then this same ant with a 5m telescopic whip when I'm portable. (around £105 total, £38 doublet, £45 qrp ant, £20 5m telescopic). I'm wondering if the doublet and the 5m telescopic would give significantly better performance over the mag loop, or if it would be comparable. The mag loop is certainly the easier and more convenient option for me. Any opinions or experience? Thanks

Look into full wave delta loops for vhf, i had a little mess about with one once and got good results. The loop is literally a full wave and fed with 1/4wl of 75ohm coax then onto your normal 50ohm coax feeder. you can change polarisation by feeding it at the bottom (horiz pol) or on the side (vert pol)

I say if you aren't interfering with anyone and it works, *who cares* ?? Using that logic, it's like saying I have a corvette and a long stretch of road that has a speed limit of 60 mph/100 km/h...there is *no* one on the road and you can safely open it up and go 120 mph and have a little fun, but no, that's "illegal"...then be a pussy. Of course, I'd never do it on a crowded highway or where there's people, that would make you reckless and stupid. But to complain about using a ham radio on the cb freqs which you can adjust the power to legal limits, it puts out a clean signal plus is just plain out fun...then be a Karen. I don't encourage breaking the law, but in the same I am all for people using their own judgement and not allowing the government to do 100 percent of your thinking. All that said, I think this was an awesome video and if I had the money, I'd do it too. So take that. :D

@@andykirby Actually, no. I tried it with 10m of wire. Strangely, I barely have to change the tuner setting when I replaced the short wire with that long wire if I want to stay on the same frequency. If this were a real magloop, then the wire would be the inductance, so doubling the length of the wire should result in about halving the resonance frequency, but going to 10m wire shifted it down only very little, maybe 1 MHz. As stated in another commend above, it's not a "real" magloop, it's a Fuchs circuit with a circular wire instead of an EFHW wire.

if authorities see this video of you transmitting on 11m with this radio, they will get a judges order to get into your home with police and confiscate your radio, then there will be a heavy fine to pay. only 1 jealous pos would report you to do that to you. i dont have a problem with people transmitting in 11m, i mean fyi. it would be to pitty if that happend to someone who is interested in hamradio & cb-radio, a qso partner, thats why i'm saying.

Struggling to find anything good/informative/educational with this video. I wonder how much power he was "really" using ?

I like a lot of your content Andy, and you've got a nice way about you that makes for easy viewing. But there's no doubt that some of your stuff puts you in clear breach of your licensing conditions and you display some very poor operating skills in this video. You spent your hard earned money on this 705 and you can do what the hell you like - I'm not saying you can't - but I think this sort of content is a bit poor. Your money, your choice, your channel, my opinion. Best 73, Tom, M7MCQ.

Can you enlighten me as to what the poor operating was? The fact I'm using it on CB frequencies?

Well for a start, you were tuning without asking if the frequency was in use (listening briefly is not enough) and then you swept across while still transmitting? I’m more surprised that you even had to ask TBH.

It's illegal to go 65 in a 60 zone too. Let me ask...have you ever gone over the speed limit? If so, then don't throw stones in glass houses. You risk many more lives doing that than transmitting on a frequency where 90 percent of radios are probably illegal anyways. Doing it and not causing a bunch of splatter or qrm as well as talking civilized is fine in my opinion.
