drag mat is for very soft dirt, sand, or snow.. snowmobile trails. beaches, they have their use.

Drag mats like this are for horse paddocks and baseball diamonds with soft dirt. The mat smooths out the footprints between events. A chain/drag harrow like JB Farms says below is heavier duty. I use one to knock down gopher mounds and break up dirt clods in my field. Works great.

Watching your video on the Dethatcher rake about 2 months ago, I was sold when I saw how easy it was picking up the pine needles. Last week, even though there were still isolated patches of snow on the ground, I just could not wait to give it a try. Hooked it up on my brand new Kioti CX2510 and a few fun hours later had cleaned my 36,000sf lot. This normally took me days of handraking before and gave me sore shoulders for days. The next day, I used the grapple to load the piles of needles, twigs and fallen branches in my trailer. I am 74 and these tools are a lifesaver for me. Thanks for the videos.

Drag Harrow is a bit different then a drag mat. The harrow will have 3 possible uses. Flat, scratch and deep. You can pull in two directions. One for scratch and the other for deep. The other side (flipped over) will be flat with no tines. Also you can add a tire or bricks on top for weight. Good point about the swing. The chain drag harrow is not too expensive and does a great job for seeding or thatch removal to name a couple of uses

I use a chain harrow to finish most grading jobs. The weight is the secret. I've also seen many sod companies on construction sites use a piece of steel I-beam welded to a chain and it worked great just dragging along behind the tractor.

I generally pull my chain harrow with my small 4 wheeler instead of the tractor. It makes the turning radius issue less problematic. The higher speed helps, too.

My Dethatcher will be here this week. Looking forward to trying it out. Thanks for the video!

for what you are doing, us deplorables in NC have used an old mattress spring with 4 concrete blocks strapped on top , it just needs a bit of even weight

I managed our 8 acres in the California High Desert - Weed City after rain/snow - with a home made drag mat made of military grade chain link fence, steel pipes and chain hook up. Pulled it with my Polaris ATV and apart from managing the swing when you get lazy on hand work, it does the job. Also have made them with railroad ties at the front middle and back but that takes either a tractor or a big ATV/UTV. Bob in Nevada

Try dragging a gate off a chain link fence, its been working great for me. Welded a couple chains on the top of it and put a bolt in the end of each of em to make an loop that slips onto the bottom 2 hooks of the quick hitch and you don't even have to remove it! It won't dethatch like the rake built for it, but works great to finish gravel or dirt. Simple storage, its light and you just prop it up against a wall.

That's what I do too. Cheap and easy to change set up for what you're doing (e.g.different lengths, add weights, etc.). For small areas I pull it by hand.

A drag mat could do well with some weight on it I’ve used chain link fence with decent success before as usual great honest video and perspective

I use the CMP dethatcher for everything. Leveling dirt like this, running across gravel driveways, leveling sand on a pond beach, etc. It is my most used attachment I own and probably the cheapest!

I've used an 8ft section of chain link fence for leveling soft tilled dirt with 3 sections of either steel beams or 2x6 wood to add some gentle weight. Cost less than $20 to make. Lasts long time. I just did a seed bed other day. Worked great but I could also have used a 3pt dethatcher in areas hard to turn around and level out some whoopee-do's. It's still on my wishlist.

Great comparison. I would thing the drag mat would be good for a long gravel driveway/pathway. Great video!

Chain harrow drag and then chain link fence as a finisher is my go to on my farm and landscaping business.

I use one for the horse arena but put weight on it like a pipe at the top and middle. Does the job. Also use to drag the gravel driveway.

I made a drag mat out of some chain link fence that I'd drag behind my truck. It was ten feet long so it had a little weight to it. It worked pretty good to get the chatter out of the gravel friveway.

I’ve built drag mats out of chain link fence wire. Used a long pole on the front side to level a hit and the wire to smooth. On harder ground threw a few old tires on the wire along its length to give it weight. Works really well to disperse and distribute manure in pastures after animals are moved out. Bonus was zero cost involved. Have their limitations though. For leveling get a land plane.

I've seen the drag mats used to breakup manure in pastures. Usually with tines.

I use a similar chain link one on our horse arena with a couple of fence post bolted on top. There are rectangular weighted 3 point hitch frames with with interlaced chain like fence suspended in the frame that can bee weighted on top of the mesh. These frame mounted chain links will level a horse arena quickly and smoothly and are quick hitch compatible. They will smooth dirt on job sites and break up clods etc. You can get them with different weights (diameter) of chain link for all the way up to industrial grade. Last resort chain link fence with a 1/1/2" pipe across the top and a chain through a clevis to the draw bar. Many different combinations and scenarios Depending on what you have and the area you are using it in!!

I have always used a drag mat after spreading fertilizer and seed to help incorporate the seed into the top quarter inch or so of the ground. Then mulch.

The only drag I ever used had heavy duty tines pointing down from the bottom which was pulled behind a plow while plowing a field. That style drag mat in my opinion would only be good for finishing a baseball diamond or maybe smoothing out a sand trap.

I have a Heavy Hitch rake. Does the same as your de-thatcher, but maybe with more bite. 2" receiver mount. I like it, but if I had the de-thatcher instead, I would probably like that, too. If I had a drag mat, I would have to load it down to get much use out of it. Thanks for the video!

Yeah, that dethatcher rake works so well. Great value item, I love it. Wish I could say the same about the drag mat, but so far I can't.

I used a piece of Cyclone Fence and pulled behind tractor in the garden after plowing it helps smooth the ground and pick up rocks

Any idea on where I can get a 3 point dethatcher rake in Canada?

Is it possible to adjust weight carried by 3Pt hitch?

I have a diamond harrow with 4" tines that is about 50" wide and 60" long and that is foowed by a chain harrows that drags weights, it can be used to thicken pasture by cutting grass runners, or to fill hoof holes after wet weather, and to level up bare patches , it's a bit different to a simple mat, and the job it does is a lot more versitile.

Id like to see you use the drag mat on that washed stone driveway! I have about 600' of it and looking for something to polish it up with thats not very aggressive.

The drag mat demonstrated is an interesting design. I think that it would work best is a very specific environment. Soft dirt with little or no rocks or organic material.

I built one used 2 sets of front steer tire chains off big truck with wide front tires. Spreads out dog manure really well and levels out some clumps

Like Randy Savage said, I made one with 4x4 and chain link fence. Chained mine behind my rake. Works great!

Drag net would work great to cover a seed bed such as a food plot, chain link fence works well

That drag mat would work well after you aerate and seed your lawn in the fall. You can use it to break up the plugs and move the seed into the holes from the aerator to help with germination

On the drag along chain link fence, can those anchor chains be secured out to the outside corners of the mount? I think that would reduce that sway out to the side of the tractor turn path…??

I would really like to see you use the landscape rake loose roots and rocks, just wondering how it works with heavier debris.

Drag mats work great for someone leveling a manicured lawn with a sand and compost mixture. Also works great for breaking up dried cored plugs from aeration. Think a Harley rake might have worked better in this situation.

Use your drag mat after your detacher. Just as you where doing with the detacher it will help remove the bjg clumps. As you can see it leaves you drag lines to plant your seed. Once you spread your seed use the drag mat last and it will smooth out the lines and cover your seed. Just like you where using the drag to help control along the road to help keep the weeds down and shoulder smooth.

@@GoodWorksTractors understand I also use mine to help keep drive way groomed and I let a cousin use the drag to help drag her land for weed control..The drag I have we made from an old truck rack window screen and two old snow chains.

I welded a couple Tposts together (knobby side down to break up dirt) and added 4x Hblocks on top for weight. The total cost was around $30. Way more efficient and better results than draggin chain link imo. Cheers🥃🍻

I take the tailgate off my utility trailer and use it as a drag. The expanded metal gets clogged sometimes though and I have to clear it.

Landscape rake works very well on gravel drives, dethatcher rake is good for light grading on gravel drives.

I drag a piece of chain link fence connected to some channel steel with some old tractor front end weights to apply downward pressure.

My use is for breaking up manure in pasture for fly control etc. Drag mat would be waste of money as available materials work fine. I’ve used old box springs that lasted years and did great with couple 4x4s thru them. Currently I use old chain link fencing with same 4x4s. The chain link takes 2 minutes to roll up afterwards.

We used the drag mats on the golf course. You need weight on top of it. We had brackets on ours to put weight on it. We used a railroad tie, and maybe a block of concrete or something.

How do you secure it though? No brackets on this guy. No manual, didn't seem like it was designed to have extra weight added. No mention of adding weight in the manual either. If I remember correctly they had straps and latches. The weight itself should keep it on. Unless you're going too fast.

I'm mistaken we used the drag mats but we also had brushes. Those are the ones that had the brackets.

Drag mats work really well if you can throw several cinder blocks on top. Wire them down so they don't fall off.

I would flip the way you used it. Use the mat after the detacher and would would be good to set the seeds

How about a drag mat with a spike drag and leveling bar?

I think a fair up price comparison to the Dirt Dog Pulverizer is warranted....Since this machine is also suited to hard compacted soils and softer soils...and it has a roller...

Sorta off topic, but I’ve been considering a de thatcher for breaking up manure on freshly grazed pasture. Thoughts?

Old cheap ranch hand way for dirt roads on the ranch is to just use some old fence rolled and flattened with some logs or rail road tie thrown on for added weight. Worked well for generations.

If you had done the Dethatcher First, then the Mat.... better results. Mats work great on more gravel for paths and built up roads ..... That dethatcher would dig deep enough that the mat would be perfect after.

Whatever is shown in this video got diluted by the time it shipped and ended up on my tractor. I still use it and it is a good tool.... but not right out of the box. Good welding project for those new to the sport.

For my property I don't see any use for a drag mat. I find it insane that such a thing cost so much. I think I could just DIY something with a chain and fencing if I really wanted some "light grading and resurfacing". Also, I didn't have the dethatcher rake on my list of things but I think it's on my list now. It's a great price too.

That drag mat is designed for sanding and leveling golf greens and possibly lawns. I'll take it off your hands. Ship it to me so I can l smooth out my church's front lawn. :) Great video however as usual!

these are much more for like arenas and ball fields, to level out consistent clean material, rather then breaking up clumps ond working rocky soil with sticks and stuff in it

You need to toss a few old car tires on top of that chain fence to get it to work properly

Courtney (and others) - probably a stupid question, but... I have what I think is an old "hay rake" - would it work similar to your dethatcher? I had never thought of using it to level my garden after use (done using, already brush-hogged, and now REALLY bumpy where the rows were), but after watching the dethatcher, I got me to thinking. (My wife tells me that it's the "thinking" part that gets me into trouble - lol!) Thanks for any insights and thoughts from you guys who really know stuff!

My grandpa made a Implement for his cub cadet out of an old hay rake which I made into a 3 point to fit my tractor and it works amazing for preping a seed bed. But it doesn’t give me the fine finish that I want to see for the yards that I level and prep for seed. But overall I wouldn’t go with out it. It cleans out all the junk and sticks from the yard that I’m leveling off and preparing for seed

@@timsawyer7443 yeah just make sure you put some gage wheels on it. It doesn’t level it out perfect by no means but it does a pretty decent job at that and cleans out all the grass clippings and sticks.

For the purposes of this demonstration it wasn’t to useful but it is a tool that has its place and time. Maybe detaching a lawn, smoothing out very loose dirt, breaking up manure piles in a cow field (ABI), maybe smoothing some loose gravel. The key thing is all I mentioned offered lite resistance when used against this tool.

It might do a better job on fresh teal dirt but drit that's been sitting for a awhile 🤔?

This dirt has not been sitting awhile. I just had it delivered and spread it out a little over a week ago. The smaller area was tilled up a week earlier too. Neither were old areas though.

IMHO, Drag mats aren’t worth paying for. They are useful, just not worth paying for. If you’re gonna buy, get a rake. I made my drag mat from materials I already had laying around: a leftover sheet of chain link fence, an iron tube from my scrap metal pile, and a length of 1/4” chain to attach it to the ball. Works well for collecting debris on trails, but you need to keep an eye on it & clean the fencing out frequently. Still, it beats picking all of this stuff up by hand. You can add “tines” to the fencing if you want a little bite. I attach U-bolts for this purpose, but I’ve also thought to sandwich the fence w/ 2x4s and driving nails thru them. Sometimes a little ingenuity can save $ to buy things that you actually need.

two pieces of pipe and a section of chain link fence would work just as well as that for a lot less money.

I’ve used an old set of single metal bed springs, does a better job than the mat in a similar circumstance!

I would have used a piece of chain link fencing, a piece of pipe and two lengths of chain. Then hang it on the side of the barn when done. Much cheaper.

I like the CMP dethatcher. It produces noticeable results. The drag mat looks like a $2,000 piece of chain link fence. In my opinion, after watching the video, it may be good for infields but that's about it. I still cannot believe the drag mat's cost.

What about a pine straw rake?

The drag mat is only good for like sand leveling in your yard. Actually I have a friend that uses an old set of bed springs to level his yard. Anything rougher than that it will be useless. Will need a heavier duty rake.

I would of added some weight on it. They just aren’t heavy enough

A drag mat is used for baseball infields and horse arenas, places that have already been groomed. To expect it to do some magic in the rough is expecting too much.

The drag mat looks like it might be good on a golf course for sandtraps. The rake does a much better job.

I use an old metal bed spring with a few cement blocks on top, added for weight. Works great and the best part is, it costs nothing.

Do you actually buy this "Drag Mat"? Use an 8ft long piece of chain link fence, heavy pipe on the front to pull from, connect the fence to the pipe, add a 4x4 across the front to keep the front down. Use longer chains to pull it. It works great for light leveling or especially for raking in grass seed. The rake is great I have one and it even cleans up pine needles, but is a pull type not a 3 point so it floats and you can add weight to get it to dig in consistently and float over hard stuff. Yes, use the rake to prep for seed, then use the drag to rake it in. I have done this for 40 yrs and have never found a better way. You can pull the drag with anything, and driving faster is better. An ATV works the best.

Only place I see the Drag Mat being useful is in horse corrals/paddocks. Just for leveling purposes though. After any manure has been removed

@@GoodWorksTractors My cousin has horses and her husband uses a homemade chain drag. It's just a piece of angle iron(5 feet long) with 20 2 foot long pieces of chain, and just drags it around behind his ATV.

@@GoodWorksTractors yeah the channel would become an "accessory" to the mat and would be removed for storage. The end user would have to experiment to see ×hat works for them, but as sold it is too light for real use. Grooming the baseball diamond is about all I'd find it useful for behind an ATV.

The drag mat looked like it was pretty useless compared to the dethatcher. Probably better for some other application.

This looks like one of those things where somebody saw one and tried to copy it, but had no idea what it was used for. The whole rollup thing is cute but useless, they should’ve just made it cheap and eliminated the rack and roll up stuff.

Train tracks weigh 40 pounds per foot on average. For a 72" wide track section, that'd be 240 pounds. Times 3 would be 720 pounds. That seems kinda heavy to be dragging across the yard, especially where one of the edges could dig in and really cut up the ground. I'm not even sure where you would look to buy rail sections, or what lengths they come in.

@J.C. Wren a standard RR tie is 9x7x102". Maybe it's because I live in an area with RRs and we even have one run through my college, JMU, but used ties are plentiful. I got a trailer full of them for $100 a few years ago. You want to avoid the almost black ones. The creosote contains arsenic and other chemicals that will make your skin burn if you handle them without gloves.

Why would you pay for this? we used to just throw down a peice of chain link fence and throw some tires on it. Smooth gravel with the lawn mower.

I dunno what that drag was intended for bot absolutely no leveling.

I’ve broke my CMP dethatcher twice now. Not impressed.

Dragmat is for sand, snow, and dirt. Not rock or gravel. It's just for Finishing, it will not grade a surface.

I see no value in this product at all. And it has a very different use that CMP rake, which I wouldn’t use on dirt or for leveling as it’s not heavy duty enough. Just my opinion

Drag mat does barely anything at all. Seems like a waste of time overall. A regular drag harrow seems way more useful and will get the work done way faster. Better yet, something from ABI like the TR3e would have made even quicker work of everything done in the is video and maybe even better as well.
