@@34Media we can't be friends anymore! lol JK, I didn't make the lens I don't mind. This is the first time I've seen a Takumar decimated in testing, the Canon 50mm F/1.2 L FD and the WAY cheaper 50mm F/1.4 were so very close it was almost indistinguishable, I was legitimately surprised how poorly the Tak did compared to the Mir inn the corners AND colour.

Team PentaCon :) For myself I'm happy with my Konica 28 f3,5 175g so smallish, and it think it keeps up in image quality. The flares are less I would think, and look more "modern" with a blu / purple tint, a matter of taste I guess. Yet another nice video, keep it up Mark !

What a chunk of a lens! Seems to be nearly as big and weighty as the Helios-40. Love it but new lenses have to wait. Need to stop my collecting frenzy 😝

Was not expecting the takumar to be down for the count like that. Hot damn. I never really noticed the corners being that soft the couple times I've used mine so far however. Guess when I get the chance to get a Mir I'll have to upgrade :)

It's weird neither was I! That 28 doesn't have THE BEST reputation, it's not a bad one, but I think it's really the strength of the MIR in this case, it's a totally different lens physically and honestly chart shooting isn't practical, but I just can't see the differences between these lenses without them. The Tak is so much smaller and that focus throw is butter.

Whenever I see the Sheriff coming I run! Great lens and you're right they are pricey now. Just saw one from Russia for 1100 Australian dollars. The other option which I own is the Nikon 28mm f 2.8 AIS which also close focuses to 20mm. It makes such a huge difference.

Keep the Nikon AIS, I love those lenses! I don't need to collect another set though lol. The last 2 months the price of this lens has gone off the charts.

Ya, they come into play around F/5.6 and close out around F/11, so you can get clean bokeh between F/3.5-F/5.6 and between F/11-F/22 which is nice.

Mark, your channel is turning me into a lens fanatic. I have to answer you in that I don’t like the flare in the Mir but all other aspects made me fall in love. Maybe I can swing some budget to the Mir lenses as my wife is a Russian born national, next time we visit I need to hit some local pawn shops to find some new toys.

Awesome video! I got both Super Tak & SMC 28mm 3.5 amazing lens. Mir 10A seems like a super cool lens. #addanotherlenstothelist

Thanks for the video. I was choosing between this and the Super Takumar but found the Mir-10A available at the camera store I go to. I also have the TAIR-11A and KMZ Helios 44 to make a set. Maybe one day I can afford to rehouse.

These Soviet lenses have my attention. I love my Helios 44m. One of my favorite lenses. I had to take it apart and change the lube when I first got it, but now it works great!

Team Sheriff Star! What a great video Mark. Finally the Mir 10A deserves the fame he deserves. Do you know how many copies where produced of this lens?

Awesome review as always! 🔥👍🔥 The minimum focus distance definitely makes this lens extremely versatile. And that star form is one of a kind. But you are right, this lens seems to be rare and therefore expensive. Can’t wait to see your second trio rehoused and ready for action. After the rehousing you definitely have a Russian (lens) army 😆

Hey Mark, if you looking for close focusing 28mm lens, try the Nikon AIS 28mm f2.8. It is a 2.8, and much smaller and lighter lens. It has been known as a gem for decades for its rendering at closest focusing distance..

The sheriff is back in town... 20cm min focus is insane, would love to get handson with that. The shape is interesting, a look for sure. What’s it like to handle compared to the tak. I always love how the taks feel, the engineering still holds up. Anyway, Stella video dude.

The tak is a much more minimalist setup for sure, mine's got that super butter focus, the Mir (this one) has some cool wear on the lens, the focus isn't as smooth out the gate (this will change on re-housing) but ya it's just a much bigger lens. I don't really use the tak 28 all that much, I prefer the 35 F/2, but I think i'm going to use the Mir 28 on a lot more than I had originally thought after playing with it.

Neat review! I kinda really like the MIR bokeh flare. Oh course, it would need to be for the right scene. I don't think I'd use it for a romantic scene for instance, but overall I love that sweet, sweet shallow depth of field.

Ya those flares are super intense and very easy to avoid, I just wanted to really MAX out those conditions to see what both are made of lol. Who knows when I'll need that optical effect for anything I do in the future (doubtful but you never know...limitations) :)

Great video as always! The sheriff's star is a little bit distracting, though I like everything else about it more than the Takumar.

@@MarkHoltze agreed, I wasn't expecting that much of a difference. I also liked the colors more, though that is subjective and is also dependent on what camera you're using obviously. A lot of my work is stuff I immediately need to turn over so don't have time to tweak them very much, if at all, so it's always preferable when I can get a lens that doesn't shift colors too much. I'm gonna keep an eye out for this bad boy and see if I can snag one for a reasonable price! Still gotta love those Takumars though!

The Mir is a real tank (with interesting image management, of course). It's also always nice to see a Takumar in action and in this regard I want to ask you if there's a difference between k-mount and M42 mount lenses in terms of color rendering. Thanks

Hi Michelangelo, I’ve never once shot with a K mount Takumar. I’m sure there might be a slight difference as the later lenses use a more “sophisticated” coating but how noticeable it will be may not be entirely distinguishable unless comparing to a yellowed thoriated m42

i guess it will provide sone magical macro shots with a macro tube between camera and lens

If you have one, you definitely don't need the other. I only got this one for re-housing purposes, the Tak is still my photo baby.

Keep an eye out, it’s crazy I know when I bought this two months ago they had like 6. What is going on?

I have a mystery 28mm "milda" that has pseudomacro character, and I also shoot with a vivitar 28 when I'm doing street photo in the (some crime) city and at night (where Fuji AF is unreliable anyway). The Milda has a huge front element (not as huge as your Soviet monster) the Milda has a creamy Bokeh when shooting close. Neither of them has flare or highlight bubbles like these USSR babies. On APSC 28mm is close to the classic 50mm rangefinder street photo FOV and I can lean on my childhood shooting a film SLR to guess FOV before I get to the shot (I am often dashing for angles with my street photos). On any sensor size, the depth of field at f4 and 5.6 is pretty big and the classic zone focus technique for hip shooting gets easier. If someone was looking to get into street photo on a budget and also have a lens they could turn around to vlog with, these vintage 28s would be my choice. None are crispy-sharp wide open, which is...eh, I have mixed feelings about trying to use them for paid (stills) work. I feel y'all video shooters get a lot creative latitude from clients. Anyway keep makin' these vintage glass reviews, Mark. You're the only person here on YT that's looking at these with a critical eye and an open mind rather than a nostalgic or 'budget' approach. I find it

The Mir seems a really special lens. Regarding close focusing distance, of course one could just used an extension tube to get any lens as close focusing as you want.

I need help! I bought takumar 28mm f3.5. I used a Nikon 7100. I can't focus my lens. I have tried a couple of adapters but still can’t focus to infinity or close depending on the adapter. what is the problem? Can you give an explanation and some solutions? Thank you so much

I don’t think there is a best, especially when you consider personal taste. I liked the canon. FD 24mm 2.8. Great value price and image overall.

Mold is tricky to do in person, bright a light. Seller should disclose if there's mold or if it was removed, if removed it should be apparent on the glass elements.

Very easy to control, don’t shoot into the mid afternoon sun lol. Even just a simple matte box covered it, definitely would never shoot like that ever with these lenses. The Mir 37 possibly

Spooky... I was drinking out of the same coffee mug in your sequence. Anyway a quick question. I have my grandfather’s Asahi Takumar 90mm f1.8 (very early model) which is in very good condition, especially after having had the thing professionally cleaned. However, it is very stiff in terms of focusing. Any ideas on how I free it up? Cheers Marcus P.S. on the lens front I have a very interesting 21mm f1.8 Voigtlander which while modern, you may find interesting.

Darn that looks like a neat lens! Must not buy anymore 28mms....i already have so many. Sherif stars look neat. I'm sometimes fascinated by the ninja stars on my old CZ lenses so I imagine I'd find sheriff stars fun on occasion too That said I do wonder how it compares to the K mount 28mm f/3.5 which has a pretty great reputation. Love that stout little boy

It's cool, but ya redundancy of 28's is for real. I never would have gotten it if it wasn't going to be rehoused, I already have the tak and i rarely use it, I prefer the 35 F/2, but the MIR 28 i'm goign to use for a LOT! Looks great on Super 35 and FF

Have you tried JUPITE 37-A 3,5/135 or MC Calejnar-5H 2.8/100? Both are among best soviet telephoto lenses

Definitely "Team Pentagon" for me. The stars are too 'different' and distracting. They take me out of the moment and become the only thing I see. The flare characteristics on the Tak are much more subtle and complementary to the image. I'm 100% video, so the marginally soft corners of the Tak don't bother me. In fact, they often add some character. Another great video, Mark. Thanks for sharing.

Good points. I should say it’s very easy to avoid those flares, I purposely framed it up so that those would be highly exaggerated. But ya corner sharpness is actually a bragging point, it’s almost completely unnecessary for most things, especially on video as the world isn’t a flat surface. The effect actually works in favour for portrait shots too... It’s all the min focus and cleaner colors for me, but the Tak will by my dedicated photo, or gimbal option, once the Mir gets rehoused it’s going to be even bigger than it is now

Oh ya kne last thing, the star only becomes prom between F5.6 and F11, before and after it’s rounded. Similar to the ninja stars you are on early AE Contax lenses. Those it’s between F2.8 and F4 which is easier to scoot around if desired.

My takumar 28mm f3.5 is super legit but that minimum focus distance is a deal breaker! I got my takumar for like $20 years ago

You can't beat a $20 price tag....even with a .40 min focus lol.

The 28mm is the only Takumar where I decided it made more sense to by the Pentax K version instead.. That's actually my most used lens, and is better than the Takumar's that came before and the smaller Pentax-M that came after.. It's super sharp and almost completely free of aberrations. I had to import it from Japan obv...

Shocked by this video! I'd love to see a comparison between the helios 50mm and the Takumar 50mm! Not sure if you've done that one yet? Couldn't find it. The problem with Helios vs Tak is the Tak is a 50 and Helios 58mm so it’s not really a great side by side. Those extra 8mm make a pretty big difference. I found I generally like the 58mm focal length a little more than the 50, but the Tak is generally sharper with better contrast than the 58. The Helios has more charm

Oh man I have moved onto fullframe sensors now, but the vintage lenses that I adored the most on the g85 gotta be those fujian 35mm f1.7/f1.6 cctv lenses, incredible character and swirly bokeh, and the minolta 50mm f2 md, sharpest vintage 50mm lens i've ever used and is very cheap. Those two are the ones i recommend the most due to their cheap price and amazing performance.

If you don't need the FF coverage is a poor version of the OKC7-28-1. The coefficient of transparency is0.74 that means is a T4 lens, and the sharpness at the edge is around 20lppm. The 6 Blade iris is on the bokeh cheap side. Is a very funny lens for photos with interesting character but IMO not very apealing for video usage.

The helios is so light and fluffy....but ya everything after that has been a Quarter Pounder on Jupiter lol

i would make sense then , that corner sharpness is better on mir, if it actually is not the corner of the coverage, but actually from the outer middle part of the lens coverage

This lens has proven that its not always the aperture that creates shallow dof, minimum focus distance is a good selling point. Also i wasn't a big fan of the 28mm focal but this video has shown me otherwise!

Exactly, that close min focus is a much bigger factor for me. Speed is nice ,but I'll admit to being kind of MEH about the 28 given there are 2.8 versions out there (not of this one).

@@MarkHoltze the carl zeiss jena 135mm isn't fast, but image quality is stunning. Its kinda of sad how some of these lenses get forgotten because of their aperture. If a slower lens performs better than a fast one then I'll choose that. I was shocked by that the Takumar 28mm performed worse in this case.

You can use that lens as a mace :-) dang sooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnn

Since I’m working on a set, not sure to go all FDs or Soviet set (mir-10, Helios, and Jupiter)… any thoughts or suggestions. P.S. I really love your content and work! Strong character from the MIR but the ninja star and price (ebay £720 + 20% tax) is a solid no for me. Should i find one for a bargain then that's a different matter ;)

You can find them way cheaper, I got mine for $200 all in with shipping. No way pay 720 might as well dust get a rehoused one for that much and sell it after 😂 . Tops I would pay is 350

This one isn’t no.

When looking at those charts you love so much you can't just focus in the middle then look in the corners and evaluate corner sharpness. These lenses don't have a perfectly flat focus plane. Your corners are actually slightly out of focus, you need to actually take another shot where you focus for the corner in order to evaluate the corners. I'm sure their corners aren't great but not this bad.

I hate charts, and yes I’m aware, if you focus for corners the corners are sharp. I’ve mentioned this in another video. Corner to corner sharpness is pointless for me but yes the standard test is to focus centre, see how it falls off at the edges. If you focus for corners, the centre isn’t sharp, as long as your focus point is sharp that’s all that matters and they are with these lenses. This test shows the delta of a single focus point and how they fall off, both lenses. Outside of comparing to one another I wouldn’t bother. The world isn’t flat, I’ll never shoot a 2D plane :) Good bit of extra info there, so thanks for that mate
