It’s always weird to me when someone doesn’t understand the obvious applications for a niche lens. You seem to think it should be similar to a standard lens. Weird.

Often forgotten pancakeish lens is the Zeiss biogon 35/2.8. Real compact and has a great look.

I had one for my M10 (which I didn't keep long), and used it as a lens cap which can take photos in a pinch. Seemed ok for that, and I would consider one again... though I prefer to have a more usable lens mounted! I had a Color-Skopar 35mm for years on my M6, M8, M9, Sony NEX, A7, Fuji X-T2... always great results, and definitely thinking about trying one with my M11.

This lens reminds me of the little Olympus 15mm F/8 body cap lens for micro-4/3. The one good thing about that lens, besides having a built-in lens cap (like a P&S camera) is a detent for the hyper focal distance at F/8. I used it on a small LUMIX G5 and it was about as big as a Ricoh GRIII. I shot a grid pattern with it and created a preset to correct the raw files for its pincushion distortion and a bit of CA at the edges. Not great image quality, but small and quick to shoot with!

I think a lens like this could almost be considered a 'training lens'. Having a fixed focal length and aperture with the only creative choices for the tog to being distance, composition, amount of light... it can be a welcoming thing. Shoot with it (and only it) for a good month or more I think might improve your 35mm compositions in general, and teach you a lot about aperture. Sometimes less is more and I think the bonus here is the compact footprint. I actually don't mind that flare of the first shot, as long as its not too intense I think it has a charm, agree the second is too much but.

I was thinking of putting one on my cl - then the camera isn’t much bigger than an iPhone if you just want it in your pocket and you have a 50 mm equivalent for snaps. Can’t understand why you’d put one on an M though.

Coming to this vid late because I got one of these on E-mount for an NEX 5 as a budget p&s type thing, where the intent is to have it in my bag literally always, so size is the main thing. Maybe I should have gotten something APS-c specific, but the inter-op with my a7iii seemed like a good idea. Though who knows if I'd actually use it on that thing, I guess we'll see lol. Plus side is that it reminded me of your channel,

One could argue that lens is very inexpensive and it is, but if you buy it then never or rarely use it- you could argue it's actually a pretty expensive lens. I really don't think I would ever buy it simply based on the fact that I think I would rarely use it because I am not a professional photographer but a busy professional who has done photography for fun for a long time.

Personally, not a real fan of all these generic lens that have been flooding the market. Probably there are a few that might be good but in most cases I just divert my attention elsewhere. One instance that has been interesting me is the Light Lens Lab. Not sure if they are consensual in the community, but recreating older lens is an interesting take

@mattdayphoto their 35mm f1.4 Summilux copy would be a fun comparison. It get’s you a long way for the money. I understand people being critical of slapping a cheap lens on an M-body but one could consider for example when you’re more of a portrait shooter and want a 35mm just for a couple occasional landscapes.

This lens a a similar design to the Voigtlander 35mm f/2.5 Color Skopar that you and @Ethanlyle_photo mentioned, in the comments which is nearly identical to the Zeiss 35mm 2.8 Biogon. The Voigtlander, particularly, is a really wonderful lens and nearly as small as the 7Artisans. It's one of my favorite 35mm's.
