Caleb this video looks so darn good! Even the in studio look is different ( which I also liked) from the others, going to try your natural settings today, probably my user error but I still have more luck color grading natural profile over 10 bit 4K , even though everyone tells me I’m crazy. Thanks for all you do!

The 18-35 on the MFT is a classic combination, especially with the extra width and light provided by a Metabones Speedbooster. I love the clean look of the lens, and you can easily tame the clinical sharpenss with a ProMist, or similar, diffusion filter. FWIW, combining the Sigma 50-100 to a second GH5 for a great 2 camera interview set up that cuts perfectly well together. The 50-100 has major focus breathing (more like gasping) and it's too heavy to use as a walk around lens, but it's wonderful for static shots on a tripod. Some people love to bash the 18-35, but it's a popular workhorse for a reason. The cinema versions of the 18-35 and 50-100 are also well regarded.

Though your focus is on videography, how would this setup perform in photography? For example, MFT is known to lack in low light situations. Would the adaptor glass setup improve in low light over a native glass; because of the adaptor's speed booster that would give a faster f-stop? Also, in the video, you mentioned using the 0.71 over 0.64 because of the vignetting. Is the vignetting of the 0.64 that bad and noticeable? I might have to rent and test both before I do buy one.

This is a very innovative lens by sigma even in today's standard. Even though I am all in with Sony E mount now. I still kept this lens. It has great build. It has one of the best zoom ring feeling of any lens I have. Even though EF lens is die out. You can still adapt it to future m43 camera, canon camera, black magic camera, etc. And lastly this lens is cheap for what it can do. It is always on sale for under $700.

I have always wanted to have a quality zoom, since I did not like the Lumix 12-60. Right now I have the GH6 and I would like to know if metabones will release an adapter for it, in case the 0.71 on the gh6 is not quite right. Do you know something, have you tried it? And as a last question, I am looking at the Tilta Cages, what is your opinion? Greetings and thanks from Spain. I love your job.

Hi Caleb, I was wondering if you change any of the in-body settings (focal length settings) when you initially attach the lens to the GH5. I've tried to research this but haven't found much info. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong places. Each time I attach the lens a window pops up and asks if I want to change the focal length of the lens. Just wondering how you deal with...or if you deal with this. Strange, but I felt like I got cleaner footage on my GH4 when using the Sigma 18-35 lens.

Yep Caleb this lens is a classic! I actually use the same combination. If you are not using another zoom on that metabones you can do the parfocal hack by adjusting the distance of the lens elements on the MB slightly as if doing back-focus on a broadcast lens, in that way you can make your 18-35 on that particular camera and the MB truly par-focal ! To get even more variety out of the lens, I recently invested in just the a plain (non speedbooster) Viltrox adapter to add a little bit more focal length if need be. None of the Viltrox adapters (I own three) are anyway near the quality of a my x.71 metabones adapter, I would especially avoid any with glass, however they are cheap but you get what you pay for!😂 I also use the 18-35 on my Canon M series cameras for stills both speedboosted and non-boosted, they feel even better than on the GH5 (better AF focussing for stills). I shall also try using it between 28-35 with A Fringer EF-NZ adapter in full frame mode on my Nikon Z9 ( when it finally arrives)😂. My copy is quite old now, I have heavily dropped it a couple of times and it is still as sharp and reliable as ever! It was the first time I ever bought a third party piece of glass because I was a Canon L glass snob, but when I saw the first images from my Canon 7D, I was stunned and it is now one of my most used lenses. 🙏🏾

  • @EugeneMaynard

    @EugeneMaynard

    2 жыл бұрын

Caleb, I think the main problems Viltrox has is their material tolerances! For example, A colleague of mine did not want to pay the big money for the Metabones so he bought the Viltrox and it was very stiff when he put it on his GH5 and when he tried to unmounted it, it was almost impossible to get it off, it took a few hours of careful wiggling to pry it off. He returned it and bought the Metabones immediately. I also find that on a couple of mine the Canon lens caps or even their own do not lock down properly onto the adapter and they are always coming off in my bag. My Viltrox speedbooster for my M series Canon drains the camera battery overnight if I leave it attached to a body which is very annoying and despite firmware updates I have yet to solve the problem! My MFT non boosted Viltox does not work with my Canon 1.4 or 2x extender (not able to change the aperture, it registers F:1.0 constantly) where my Metabones works perfectly! Not all of their firmware updates work when using a Mac which has had a lot of people updating and thinking their adapter is bricked. In my experience their customer support on their official website hardly replies with any type of worthy customer support and they sometimes remove old firmware so it is impossible to down grade. Apart from that they are cheap but buyer be ware! You get what you pay for and no more!🙏🏾

Question about your rig in general - I suspect it's a matter of preference, but I'm interested in yours. When do you prefer a top-handle and when do you prefer a side-grip (if at all)? Maybe I should leave it at home and force myself to use the top-handle, then I'll probably figure out where I like it haha

the sigma 18-35 is an absolute workhorse i love it and it is on my gh5 90% of the time. it also works great on gimbals because you do not have to re-balance it when you change the focal length! I also use it with my Viltrox speed booster ( it is a little bit soft when wide open at 1.2 and shooting against the sun but it okay in opinion!) when you buy the Viltrox speed booster make sure to get the mark 2 because it is significantly better!

You know, different strokes but I find 18-35 to be a really weird-ass range for a zoom. If I'm going with a zoom I'm generally wanting to do it so I can pull out for an establshing and then punch in for a close up, and going from 18 to 35 just... isn't quite enough. I run the Olympus 12-40, and while yes, it isn't nearly as fast, the improved range from wide to tight means I can get the shot without asking my subject to do what they just did again.

I have one of these lenses (nikon mount) on a viltrox, the image quality is fine, but its manual use only with aperture adjusted on the viltrox which interacts with the toggle on the back of the lens, as the lens itself has no aperture ring of course. I've had excellent results with cheap focal reducers in general, and don't buy the claim metabones makes of some magical technology for image quality. I'm still getting to know the lens, but its insanely good value to get a lens this fast with this range of focal lengths, I look forward to trying it in low light one day. It is heavy as you say. To my eye, colour contrast is a bit lower than on the panasonic lumix II 12-35 native micro four thirds kit lens, but will have to do some comparisons to know if that's my imagination or not. I can certainly see how this could become the go-to lens in ones kit. The wide grip rings are a nice feature.

@@RyanOnDrums I haven't uploaded - but there are plenty of vids online. It's a very heavy lens, quite oversize for the GH5. This tends to make you not use it so much, however the extra mass helps reduce shake if shooting handheld. It's extremely fast, and insane value for money, makes it good for low light if you don't need long focal length, and has very low lens internal flare. For daylight casual shooting I use something else smaller and lighter.

My best lens that is 80% on my camera is sigma 16mm f1.4 native lens and after I tried sigma 18-35 with metabones 0.71 I think that the 16mm sigma isn't any worse. So I stick with my 16mm sigma for lighter setup

My thoughts on it also, add the 30mm and 56mm to complete the sigma prime lens trio.

@@davidvictory9764 sigma 16 is good for any gh5 purposes... I would say that if you have gh5 there is one must for video content creation and that is sigma 16mm. If you are a fan of photography I can tell you for sure sigma 56mm will surprise you very much!

@@davidvictory9764 you won't be mistaken... I've tried most of the very best lenses for m43 and these two are simply the best. I would also suggest Olympus 75-300. I had the first version of this one and you won't believe what images is coming out of the camera while using this super tele photo lens. Don't get confused about the aperture that it offers, it is very good even in low light. Hard to explain, but if you can just try this lens, try it in the evening and tell me what you think 🙂

yes: Metabones or Viltrox EM2 F2 (which is much cheaper)

@@colinthecameraguy depends on your budget. I like my Viltrox...but Metabones is sharper...and 4x the cost. Yesterday I was comparing a lumix lens with no adapter on my gh5, with a nikon lens with the viltrox. Granted, it wasn't a scientific test, but I had to zoom into screen captures from each lens, over 200% to detect any softening caused by the Viltrox. That's good enough for me. A lot of filmmakers like to shoot slightly softer for a more filmic look anyway.
