I have this lens. I use it for landscape photography. If you set the aperture to f8 or f11 it becomes very sharp. It is particularly good for shooting trees because it has virtually no chromatic abberation. Darker shapes against bright sky remain very clean. It is exceptionally good for black and white photography or where colours are more subdued. A downside is that it dramatically changes look as you change aperture including colour so I think colour is it's weak point. Unfortunately it is quite expensive now. I have a lot of the older preset or auto Takumar lenses from the 1950s into 60s and they are all very good. The 200mm f3.5 preset is one of my favourite lenses ever.

Reminds me of the once very common "convertible" lenses. In the late 19th/early 20th many camera lenses were fully symmetrical designs, with the aperture (and later leaf shutter) between the 2 groups. For most of them you could take off the front element by design, and get like a 240/11 instead of a 135/6.8. My 9x12 glass plate camera has one of those. It went quickly out of favour though, since for once newer lens designs weren't symmetrical anymore and also the quality decline is quite substential, so as soon you don't do only contact prints, cropping and enlarging negatives taken with the standard lens yielded better results than the "telephoto mode".

Would suit an M4/3 body much better. Send it over and I'll stick it on my EM1 MkII. Nice macro work. I went the opposite direction and hooked up a small enlarger lens to an extension tube. Close focus of 4" on the 50mm and 75mm F/3.5 lenses. Those things are smaller than a 46mm lens cap in diameter and half the height of a AA battery. Great fun.

The Sony of course! Because I am a Sony user. Back to the secret trick. On the Sony select APS-C Capture ON. Now you are in crop sensor mode magnify by 1.6 I think? Anyway, I have been selecting crop sensor on my A7M2 with my Tamron SP 90mm 2.5 macro lens. New old lens to me. Still Trying to get the subject in focus. It is even harder with the 2x multiplier on. For now no 2x multiplier that make the lens 1:1. This lens is sharp in the center. And the crop mode helps there. You just can not beat old glass for the price!

As far as I know these early wide angle lenses were using "normal" lens design with wide angle converter added to the front (similar to those you can buy today for video cameras etc.), thus not such a great performance in the corners compared to newer lenses. I suppose by unscrewing the front element you simply change the focal length and get the narrower field of view, so you get bigger magnification.

Which camera does this lens look better on? Yes I would agree it looks better on the Sony and I would agree that I am shallow too and worry about such things.............I just cannot help myself. (Well I AM a photographer and so should worry about aesthetics). I find that most lenses with a skinny body look kind of "Naff" as the British say (British slang for worthless, tacky, unfashionable) when adapted as most adapters seem to be designed for lenses with a larger girth. So most adapters (and especially most M42 adapters for some reason) likewise have a rather larger body diameter. This means that a lens like this one looks a little weird sitting on the end of that kind of adapter. (Kind of like a skinny girl with a huge "badonkadonk" - according to the Urban Dictionary "an extremely curvaceous female behind. Women who possess this feature usually have a small waist that violently explodes into a round and juicy posterior") Hmmm OK but not to my aesthetic taste. In lenses I mean - I thought I should clarify that before get into more trouble than undoubtedly I already am. :^) But in this case there is a quite good alternative. I dumped my previous M42 to Sony adapter and instead bought a K and F concept "Pro" adapter (a redesigned line of adapters that this firm has just recently placed on the market). The nice thing about this newly redesigned adapter is that not only is it well built but that the end of the adapter cylinder is kind of chamfered down to a smaller size so a smaller diameter lens looks less out of place when mounted on it. I suspect this design feature is deliberately chosen for just this situation. And because the rest of the adapter's body has a "normal" larger diameter, a larger diameter lens also looks good too. I have become a fan of this "Pro" range and now how them for several lens systems. A typical ad for them follows so you can see what I am talking about (neither the seller nor the product has any connection to me - as I say I am just a fan of good product design and this one has it in my view - especially for lenses like this one). PS I also have this lens and its excellent. They say it is based on an Angénieux design (or did you say this Mark in your earlier video?). www.aliexpress.com/item/4001039015099.html

Some call that “character” 😆 yes most likely due to the rays not being properly corrected by that retro focal front element. Macro tends to be very center specific so I think in this case it only adds to the image vs taking anything away. It is highly subjective though and I appreciate a case for both arguments :)

@@MarkHoltze Some of the images were awesome. Regarding the lens, are you sure this is marketed as macro? I recall another director (dont remember which) who modified his lenses by adding or removing the first element to achieve a vignette and soft focus around the center. Actually now that i think about it I think it was Roger Deakins. I think he added the front element from a wider lens to a tighter lens to achieve the effect. Maybe it has some correlation, I noticed some pictures appeared very distorted and soft around the center.
