This isn't Porsche's First Hybrid 911

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Porsche has been planning a hybrid 911 for awhile and it's finally happening with the new 992.2 GTS. But this isn't the first 911 with a hybrid drivetrain. In this video, let's peek inside what Porsche has been thinking and the clues they left that lead to this point.

Very good video. So, my 911 (992.1) was just finished being built at the factory. It’s a GTS Coupe with a manual transmission. Do I think the new hybrid will be super fast and bad ass? Absolutely. But, I wanted a 911 that would have a manual and engaging. Not just floor it and go WFO and fly down the road. I did that in my ‘23 C8 Corvette. Great car but something was missing and I believe the Porsche I ordered and will be getting will be one that won’t be easily replaced. Cheers to Porsche for always engineering to the highest level. 🏁

Congrats on the new car! GTS is such a great choice. Any special color or options?

@@WFO. Sounds nice! I drove a 992.1 when Porsche did the test drive event at Laguna when they first came out, but I don't recall if it had rear wheel steering or not. Overall was such a nice package and the low rpm torque of the turbos was a game changer versus my 991.1S. (Mine is also white, so good choice!)

For me the 911s are perfect for electrification, since you don't have the transmission, drive shaft or exhaust cutting the half of the car's midriff, so there enough space for a flat battery pack, which helps reduce the CoG of the car, which is good since the entire powertrain of the car is at the rear axle. What surprised me is how long it took to come to fruition, but I guess Porsche doesn't want to take too radical decisions with their flagship car, which is understandable.

I think I should do another video on EV battery position and how that effects handling. I touched on it in my "Where are the electric sports cars" video a little bit if you want to take a look on my channel! Thanks for watching.

My daily driver is a 991.2 Targa 4 GTS. I would not trade this for a 992. The simple lack of the gear shift knob in the 992 is enough for me to keep driving my 991.2. I also like the analog gauges in the 991.2.

Thanks, great video. I think there are few EV sport cars because sports car drivers by nature are petrol heads, they love engines and the mechanical feel of an engine. I drive 911’s my wife has a Taycan. The Taycan is very capable and good to drive, but I never look out of the window and think “I can’t wait to start up that Taycan”, every time I see my 911, I want to drive it or start it up. it’s beating heart is it’s engine, there is no getting away from that. Also most sports car drivers buy or own their cars, most don’t tend to lease, in the UK no one is buying EV’s, they’re only being leased because residuals are so poor on EV’s vs petrol. I am actually kind of excited about the hybrid 911’s, they’ll still have the iconic flat 6, but I don’t know what to think about the impending EV Cayman / Boxster? I used to own a Cayman GTS, the whole essence of that car was the angry engine right behind your head, an EV Cayman 🤦‍♂️, sure it will be fast and capable but will you want to drive it? And the residuals ……….

I agree, I mean I only own petrol cars so totally agree with you but in my other video on EV sports cars I do mention that instant torque and I sane acceleration might be fun if they can keep the weight down and centralize the mass so that it handles like a sports car. Lots of EVs use a flat floor battery but that's good for low CG but bad for handling overall. I just find it a little crazy there are all these insanely fast EV sedans but not many EV sports cars with two doors.

Considering Porsche is going down that road, and with previous outstanding cars and prototypes to back this up, there doesn’t seem to be any chance of not buying hybrid if one wants a 992.2. Unless some specific versions such as the GT3 continues to be on offer purely NA without hybrid boost. Hybrid wouldn’t be my first choice, but I’m not against it either. As long as Porsche succeeds to provide the brand’s feel and DNA when one is at the wheel - especially in a 911 - then no worries. But it will have to be totally convincing. A new chapter starts on Tuesday 😎

I guess we'll hear more on May 28th but I think only some of the 992.2s will be hybrid, such as the GTS.
