My adult daughter lives in Florida and was coming at the end of delivering newspapers. She was going about 40, not under any influence, not speeding. She was following the rules of the road. As she was passing a concrete divider in the center of the road, some guy under the influence of something (police who responded later confirmed he was under the influence, but did not specify what) dove out right in front of my daughter. She had no time to react. He hit the driver's side of her car, totaling it out. My daughter has nightmares still. She was found 100% NOT at fault. The mother of the guy who jumped in front of my daughter's car is doing her best to sue my daughter for a million dollars. My daughter is still fighting this lawsuit. Fortunately, her home is in her father in law's name. It always has been, as he gave it to my daughter and his son. My daughter is in therapy for PTSD. She has nightmares all the time from this horrible accident, but she holds no responsibility, as it wasn't her fault.

The aftermath does stick with you. When I was young and an EMT, my partner and I got called out to a rural scene. A motorcyclist going home did what his friends say he did daily - failed to stop before crossing the highway. Too bad an elderly couple were on the highway at that exact moment. T-boned him, he went up the hood, hit the windshield, over the roof and off to the shoulder of the road. On arrival, his body was chest down, but the head was face up. My hardened paramedic partner didn't even want to touch him, but for liability purposes, I checked for a pulse. His body was like a bag of jello. It just jiggled all over when I tried. We had to get the elderly folks to go to the nearby house because we thought they were going to have a heart attack. I'm glad it was the coroner that had to pick him up, because I wasn't sure how we would have. I think that was worse than the guy missing the turn doing triple the speed limit and hitting the chain link fence. I remember these vividly and that was the early 1980s.

That's exactly why police aren't supposed to de-escalate from a level of force once they've had to escalate that far. Verbal commands are the lowest level of force, with hands-on restraint being the next level of force. This officer got to the hands-on point but then released the suspect and went back down to verbal commands. When officers do that, bad things like this usually happen. Look up the case of David Ware. He wound up shooting two officers during a traffic stop. Both were hit in the head, one died. There are videos of it on KZread. Those officers de-escalated from hands-on back down to verbal commands and it gave Ware the time he needed to retreat back into his car and retrieve the gun.

He's TOO patient & he's gonna end up dead of he doesn't stop his non-sense ! His taser is the perfect tool to stop all of this & keep everybody safe.
The person I feel worse for in this situation is the sorry random person that happened to run over the guy. An absolute horror I couldn't imagine living with.

I think at first I'd be a bit distraught. After I found out he was DUI and running from the cops, my attitude would change to f?@k him. Then I would sleep a ok knowing he cant hurt anyone with his retardation.

Short bus for about 10 seconds….classic!
Props to the officer for being so patient
05:18 The fact even at this point he wasn't under arrest for resisting shows how lenient the officer was willing to be had he been of sound mind and followed the simple instructions hed been given.

Could the officers behavior been due to the fact that he was alone? Maybe he was just trying to keep things calm until backup arrived, but I'm not a cop so idk.
It sucks for everyone involved, that cop was more than patient with the guy. I just feel for the innocent driver that ended up hitting the guy and the poor cops who had to witness this.

IKR the impeded travel plans that night, the associated paperwork, body shop, loaner car thingy ... and poor Volvo, messed up
I wish I could have seen that dashcam footage of the last one
This reminds me of something. A few years ago, some dude tried sneaking into Bonaroo. He tried to run across I-24 and got creamed by a tour bus, belonging to Ricky Skaggs, who, coincidentally, was on his way to perform at Bonaroo. I am guessing that the results were similar to what happened here.
This is a great example of why a lot of cops don't give more than 1-2 warnings before escalating. So many people can't be trusted to not accidentally die at any given moment. Thank goodness the driver was okay.

But yet I still think not escalating is the right move. You can't stop everyone from Darwining themselves. But you can't just mag dump everyone who frustrates you.

America is the land of the free, it's a good thing that cops are expected to de-escalate and show excessive restraint against using force. Otherwise we wouldn't be any different from a communist police state like china or soviet russia.

Ask me if I'd run when I'm sober, and ask me again when I'm not. The answer should be the same, but they're probably not.
This shows that sometimes it's in the best interest for all involved to detain the suspect quickly - including the suspect.

John and Mike over at ASP like to remind us that sometimes a little extra force up front can save you a whole lot of force down the road. In this case the force of a medium sized car travelling at highway speeds.
