THIS is why I took the 2400 mile round-trip from Texas for Brian to do the timing job on my 5.43v (it's over his left shoulder at the start of the video). Local dealer wanted $7k for the job, other local mechanics just looked at me with blank stares having no clue what I was asking for. My back and leg injuries would not allow me to take on this kind of job anymore, even with his how-to videos. Brian is the best diagnostician I have ever seen. Literally one in a million. Wish he would move to Texas, we need folks like him here.

@mllarson the estimates I received were all around $1000 one-way. I spent about $1300 for gas, lodging, food and a rental car. Treated it like a vacation.

Trust the experience of those with the experience. Experience has its own reward. Worked in a Ford dealer for many years. We techs would discuss many issues over coffee breaks and lunch times together. We often resolved a lot of issues. These websites help make better techs. Thanks for you input. The old school guy.

I’m not saying there aren’t dishonest mechanics/technicians, but I will say that I’ve been in the industry for over 20 years, and have seen more honest than dishonest. Usually when a tech or shop has issues diagnosing a vehicle correctly, it’s lack of training.

Brian, I, like many, was blown away by your video on the F-150 tail lamp repair saga. Honestly, I know I'm showing my age but what even happened to just replacing a bulb!

Exactly. Problem is, we've allowed the government to get out of hand and dictate how we live life. Some of the modern safety features on new vehicles definitely save lives, but so much of what was involved with the $5,000.00 tail light repair is just unnecessary IMHO. Same for CAFE standards....ridiculous government mandated economy standards that force car makers to do really stupid things trying to meet those so-called 'standards'. And (sorry for the rant) lastly, our crazy addiction to every conceivable BELL AND WHISTLE on new cars and trucks that is beyond ridiculous. And yes, I'm an old fart, too.

Nice job! It's not so much as knowing everything, but being thorough and honest. Both of which are hard to find in the automotive repair field.

It's not unusual that a parts swap is not performed correctly. Same as it was here. Not tightening correctly or forgetting a washer can have great consequences.

I was actually taken aback on how you are not “one of the shady mechanics” I have stumbled across. You are honestly one helluva stand up guy. Thank you for being YOU!!!!

The difference is that you are willing to do the diagnostics and not just throw parts at a vehicle and hope you nail it. Of course experience plays a huge part in it. Keep up the good work and keep making videos. Your 5.4 timing videos gave me the confidence to do mine. Saved a fortune!

This is why i fix things myself unless i dont feel like it. Then i take to a friend mechanic after i diagnose it. I had a rattle in front and it turned out to be sway bar end links not a ball joint like i thought it might be. Mechanics that dont take time to diagnose properly (like dealers) are equal to criminal thieves IMO.

Agreed. The issue is sometimes people don't want to pay for the time to properly diagnose a problem. I hear "Oh, you're gonna charge me just to check it?" several times a week. We often need to educate the customer about the value of diagnosis time.

I had a 2016 Transit towed to my shop a couple weeks ago, had parts cannon fired at it already, starter, trans range switch, ignition switch, battery. Was taken to a Ford dealership for a pcm, and dealer told him it needed a $6k transmission replacement. I was the second opinion, it had 20 stored codes, had to be jump started every time, trans did weird stuff, didn't shift. I went through my checks, including what was already done, checked the big fuses under driver's seat, all that. I found a MISSING FUSE in the underhood fusebox, cleared all the codes, fixed for under 2 bills. Owner was extremely happy with me and extremely pissed at the dealership 😂😂. This was the first of 2 cars from rip off dealers, 2nd was a Hyundai but that's story for another time

@@rcnelson A lot is emissions but a lot is for creature comfort. I prefer the simple vehicles, they are just more reliable. Some more luxury brands aren't bad with certain vehicles and electronics, but you still have to be careful.

We had a guy at the dealer brought in a windstar for an engine knock, the tech diagnosed as an rod knock and sold them a new engine. All fully installed and the knock was still there. Turned out the intake manifold came apart inside and was rumbling around when you’d hit the gas. That was an expensive repair.

Did you use the Melling engine oil pump? We did this job on a 2009 F-150 with the 5.4 3 valve. Owner is happy as the engine is quiet and certainly increased oil pressure by 10 psi.

I find it rather apauling that a shop will roughly say its a rack, even myself as being just a do it yourself person wouldn't mistake that as a rack noise,, strut mount or control arm bushing (s) can do so also, Awsome Video,, Great Guy! Owner is lucky to chosen FTM :)

Thankfully you are a honest mechanic not looking for a large payoff to purchase a new boat.

I had that issue with 2002 Ford Explorer. I had lack of power misfire. I had an honest mechanic tell me it was a catalytic converter. He cut it off and put a straight pipe. Now the vehicle runs like a champ. Where I'm from we don't have emission laws. LOL

Same thing happened when I had struts replaced on my car. They left the the sway bar links loose. Struts are a pretty easy job but this was during the first 6 months of Covid and as a truck driver I was too busy to do it myself. Ruined the sway bar links so I should’ve just done it myself. Lol

My experience with plugged converters is it will drive and shift fine under light throttle situations, but as soon as you feed it the onions it won't shift and will fall flat on its face. Seen lots of guys replace a trans because of plugged cats lol. Also, it'll usually have misfires for multiple or all cylinders. Just my $.02. Great video Brian. Absolutely correct.

I had one of these Exploders come in one day with a ton of noise on bumps from underneath, a shop quoted thousands for a lot of front end work, I was the second opinion...turns out whoever did work to the driveshaft didn't tighten the center bearing on the rear driveshaft...I cranked those bolts down and the noise was completely gone, we didn't even charge it out. We've been working on it ever since.

I have learned over the years that loose or worn stab bar links and bushings can seem tight on a two post lift with the wheels hanging, but then when you put the car on an alignment ramp, you pick up loose you couldn't see with wheels hanging.

2nd opinions are gold. Even if it's your own second opinion. Took my 2018 F150 with 5.0 to dealer with typical "potential phaser issues" type of symptoms. Basically they just listened to my symptoms and recommended a full phaser job to the tune of about $4200. More research and another shop and we determined it could just be a bad phaser solenoid. Changed the solenoids on one bank (even though only one was diagnosed as bad) for about $500 .. truck has been driving like a dream since.

@@rcnelson bad cam phasers did wonders for Ford truck reputations just like Active Fuel Management did for GM.

We need a nationwide network of honest mechanics. You , South Main Auto Repair, Pine Hollow etc. so we can all have a good mechanic to call on. I do 99% of my own repairs but it always hurts to take it on the other 1% because in my experience it’s hit or miss.

Yeah sometimes I don’t trust people 👍👍👍👍 Long story short… mother Inlaw was told her 97 7.3 needed needed replaced..$10,000 ! Well I found it was only a short in wire harness on driver side for the injectors and the wire that wraps around them all was digging into them. I cleaned it up and told her $10,000 😂 been about 5 years now and running strong 💪

I agree 100% that you checked every nut and bolt that he touched . Anyone competent and honest is busy with repeat customers . Your work sells itself . We all know some shops constantly upsell anything they can . But when they rob customers through incompetence , they need a trip to small claims court . We are not talking about wiper blades , cabin filters , air filters. , etc . But engine and transmission ! That's outrageous .

A lot of shops, it seems, are only looking for the "right now" customer rather than building life long customers.

4:21 okay that's when you know he's a good respectful mechanic he's wearing rubber gloves so he don't get grease or dirt on the steering wheel and handles shifter ect. It's little things like that that set mechanics apart. At work the mechanics work on our dump trucks and the next day I have to spend 20 minutes and a bucket of Lysol wipes to get the steering wheel handles cranks switches Everything clean in my truck because they get in there with grease black hands and touch everything no respect! I spend 10-16 hr a day in that dump truck i keep it clean but the mechanics have no respect for us drivers. This guy Brian i think his name is is respectful and great mechanic!

I got a second and third opinion on my wife’s ‘17 Explorer for a cylinder 3 misfire (2.3 EcoBoost), and coolant loss. 3 dealers couldn’t figure it out, all saying coolant wasn’t losing enough pressure. After some research and watching your videos of EcoBoost coolant issues, a trip to Harbor Freight for a camera confirmed my suspicions… coolant in the #3. Fortunately it was just a blown head gasket. But 3 Ford dealerships couldn’t find it. The one that did, was only after seeing the misfire code show up, even with me showing them pictures of coolant in the cylinder!

Had a same situation it turns out to be a loose outer tire rod bolt after getting a alignment. He showed up wanted his rack and pinion replaced. he was so content with what we found that he gave us a both100$ tip.

Once again my friend you are a technician not a parts changer. I’ve learned a lot in 50 years of turning wrenches. Cheers!

I did the same thing when someone was trying to sell a new HVAC system to my home. I got a second opinion and I didn't need any of that stuff

I did a second opinion once, and I was shocked the second opinion coincided with the first one. I had a 1995 Ford Contour with the 2.0L. It overheated. Ran like a champion, but the temp gauge would overheat. Shop said engine had a blown head gasket, and it was causing air to enter, to cause it to overheat. Seemed odd. Lost no coolant, heater worked great. Took it to a second one, they also suggested the engine. Not wanting to dump a lot of money, I decided to take a peek at it. I was only 16 at the time, and it was my first car, my parents didn't want me to break something. Back in the day, found the 1995 Ford Car service manual. Started peeking in, found troubleshooting steps. Noticed when the temp gauge got hot, noticed the fan didn't kick on. I forced the fan on, temp gauge dropped back to normal. After that, I put a thermometer into my coolant, temperature was about 160F. I let the car go way into the red, the temperature was about 210F, and then the engine fan kicked on. The Contour had 2 sensors I learned. 1 for the PCM, and 1 for the gauge cluster. Replaced the right sensor, noticed that the sensor to PCM was replaced too, car never overheated again. I think about $15 from the Ford Dealer back then? After that, I have never trusted a shop again lol.

Thanks Brian! Every group online that I am in about 12 gen F150's I keep hearing problems from electric to mechanical and they are saying they just replaced them with new parts. Come to find out it's always been aftermarket parts, especially spark plugs and coils. So I'll link one of your videos about OEM parts.

I installed 8 cheap Amazon coils in my 11 6.2L F150 and it felt like the motor was going to fall out. Tons of misfires. The engine is probably really mad at me for giving it such garbage 🤣🤣. Old coils ran as smooth as butter, even though they had some sparking.

​@alb12345672 Ford v8 coils are rarely faulty but the spark plug boots fail A LOT. If I have a vehicle come in with water down in the spark plug hole (coolant leaks or engine washing) then it gets coils. If it is misfire only under heavy load with original coils and goid plugs then I do boots and have far fewer repeat misfire than with parts store brand new coils.

@@jimmyaber5920 I reused the boots from the junk coils (and these have a little pellet resistor that gets spent). Improved a ton. But two coils are completely destroyed, a hole blown in the plastic. So got two Ford ones from Rockauto, runs new now.

Brian, any idiot in the world can throw parts at something until they get lucky and find the bad part. The hard part of any repair trade is accurately diagnosing what the problem really is. Once that is done the repair usually becomes obvious. Keep the good stuff coming buddy.

About a year and a half ago, I bought a 2013 Ford Police Interceptor Utility with 57k miles on it. I love the vehicle. I called a dealer and asked what he would charge to add remote start. The dealer was in a suburb just southwest of Chicago. He seemed friendly and quoted me $1400 give or take. He said they would have to send the vehicle to a person who specializes in installing an after market system. Then I learned about Forscan. Then I learned that all I needed was a $40 hood safety switch from Amazon and a $17 key fob. Works like a charm!

Just bring it to Brian first then no need for a second opinion. Huge respect for honest professionals like Brian.

Parts bomb, when people don't know how to diagnose the problem. That is so common these days it's sad. Glad to see a professional like this who knows his stuff

Yeah I like ford parts over the aftermarket junk when I do water pumps on the 3.5 and 3.7 I always get the chains,guides and water pump from ford I always enjoy watching your videos I learn a lot from you young guys

I've learned over the years to do nearly all of the maintenance and repairs myself, specifically because I have zero trust in 99% of mechanics out there. That said, if I had a mechanic nearby that's as honest and professional as Brian, I would've never learned anything about cars. I can't figure if that's good or bad.... 😂

Talking about the F150 hub bearing issue towards the end of your video: I have a 2005 F150 Lariat which just turned over 150,000 miles on it and apparently it still had the original factory hubs up front! And boy, when they go out, they go out! One wheel hub went out about 2 months ago and only knew about it because 4 out of the 6 lug studs sheared off and I was getting a loud noise from that wheel! Not more than 2 weeks later and the other bearing started to go out and i just got a weird metal on metal noise from it. Went to inspect it with the truck up in the air and i COULD NOT even spin the bearing! That's how bad it was. I couldn't believe these were the factor hubs. No idea they could last that long!

@fordtechmakuloco, great stories! Thank you for being honest. You helped me tremendously when I replaced my timing components. The dealer told me I needed a new engine because I was a little over due on an oil change but had otherwise maintained my vehicle. So glad there are still honest mechanics out there.

The unfortunate part is replacing the steering gear would have “fixed” it. They either would have tighten the bolt in the process (some vehicles require subframe to be lowered) or they would have found the problem before calling customer that repairs were completed. Glad they got a 2nd opinion.

Wife's Transit 350 had clunky shifting. I know zero about transmissions so we took it to Ford. I think it was 3800 to fix the tranny, 6800 to replace. We took it to the local AAMCO and dude took about 30 mins to tell us the coolant was low and tranny got too hot. $40 for fluid and I found the leak and fixed myself. It's been fine for about 2 years now.

We need more honest and ethical mechanics like you. My hats off to you sir for doing the right thing, day in and day out. Blessings.

All Ford vehicles should come with a warning label or disclaimer that modifications will be necessary to prevent catastrophic component failure due to poor automotive engineering and design. Thankfully for "FordTech", this in not the case, otherwise his exclusively Ford channel wouldn't be necessary. As a (3D) disgusted, discouraged and disappointed Ford owner, I am glad he is here to save the day!!!

Can you imagine if you went through all the work of swapping the steering, take it for a test drive and clunk clunk. Great job finding the issue so quickly.

Thank you for reminding us that a good diagnosis is everything. I was a mechanic some years ago and have a few similar stories . It almost takes good common sense and a knack of looking in the right direction.

Back in the day when I worked at a shop, I found the best way to locate suspension noises was to put the car up on the lift and then lower the wheels, one at a time, onto a stand to take the weight off the suspension. Often when everything his hanging, nothing will seem loose or squeaky but if you take the spring tension off the culprit will show himself. That was what you did with a pry bar but if you use a stand, you don't need a lot of muscle. Every loose component will move more easily. I would usually do all four wheels, one after the other. Sometimes you will find more than one loose component.

From my own experience of having someone replace front suspension components, “always” recheck that what you replaced is fully torqued down and check for anything that wasn’t replaced that maybe not fully tight. My cousin helped me replace the front struts and lower front control arms on my 2009 Mustang and I found he hadn’t gotten the lower strut bolts torqued down.

I will be replacing my 2003 Ford Ranger front suspension next week and your video was very helpful!!! Glad I came across it!

Hey who's your camera operator! 🤓 Second opinion for everything is pretty solid advice! I had a neck injury and was told by 6 different surgeons there was nothing they could except possibly make it worse, it took me 11 years to find the right guy, did minimally invasive surgery and fix the problem! TDR 2 levels C5-C6, C6-C7. I hope NO ONE needs to have that experience with their automobiles! I twisted wrenches for 25+ years and told my customers only provide symptoms NEVER what another shop thinks what might be the problem, you want a totally independent opinion from anyone else, and weigh the results to come to the best conclusion. Once you receive that information you can share the other opinion to get a reaction to see if it holds any water. Brian I've been watching you since your dealership days and you are true blue honest opinion and if you did misdiagnose a repair you came right out and said well I missed something and this is what I had to do to make it right...No smoke and mirrors! I had a similar situation with my 2013 FPIS. I had replaced the front control arms (bad rear bushings), and front struts (age), tie rod (loose). About 10 months later I started hearing a noise in the front end. Looked everything over multiple times and could never find anything. I was talking with a buddy about it and we came to the conclusion that one of the struts had to be defective (Monroe). I no longer worked at the shop that I worked at when I go them, but they still honored the warranty. When I went to pick up the car they took me out in the shop and showed me that they had indeed warrantied out the struts but that they were not the issue. They had it sent up to where they could duplicate the noise . They said they believed it to be the ball joint but could not replicate the noise in the air to confirm. The next day at work I pulled it onto a hoist and was investigating the issue. It indeed was the ball joint, the nut had backed off enough to where there was no play but you could ever so slightly rotate the nut/stud it both directions. I took the nut off and made sure all the threads were fine then I put some lock-tite on the threads and put the nut back on. Hasn't been an issue since. So, as you say, even being a mechanic it's never a bad idea to get a second opinion when you get stumped. Have a great day!
