I think sticking to a color palate really helps with this. I am very fair so I tend to use navy and brown as a base instead of black except for black slacks. So when I’m looking at something, I ask whether it will go with navy or brown tones and then almost everything goes with jeans!

☄There's something very special of buying a brand new outfit that is all perfectly coordinated. Makes you feel like a 💰million bucks. 😆However, it can be frustrating to own a bunch of "one-offs" that don't fit with anything else you own. 😔Growing up there was such a strong stigma about thrift store clothes, so I try to avoid anything that gives that overall impression to myself. Find other ppl can try design risks that would simply turn out an awkward fail on myself. 🏮Being coordinated & more matchy-matchy is my thing too. I don't mind when others mix a creamy white w/crisp white, but I would never personally do that. 😍Love black, navy & brown, but will rarely mix them together. Although trying that out a bit more now. 🗽Another issue for me is preferring more continuity from top to bottom. Knowing that choppiness in colors & patterns can cut my frame, reduce my height, & also unflatteringly point to areas I'd rather show less emphasis. 🗝On top of understanding your lifestyle, overall style, & climate -- knowing your personal colors are key. Build a color palette to suit you. Experts say choose 6-9 colors as your base. These are the colors you wear the most. Having less can keep your wardrobe more streamlined, but for me it can also make it feel boring & rather restrictive. Feel it's better to be able to swap some things in & out by mood, look, &/or season, so I lean toward 12-15 core colors at present. Once you establish your neutrals, you need to💲buy with that in mind. 🤔Find it effective to take that colorful &/or patterned blouse that caught my 👀eye into the dressing room w/a similar trouser & skirt in a color & style from the store that already exists in my wardrobe palette to test it out. 🚫If it doesn't work in a couple of looks, no matter how tempting, I pass on it. 🖤Love & need some pattern to coordinate my solid separates, but in the end I am very fussy about it. 🌸Adore larger romantic florals, but I only wear them sparingly. More apt to re-wear: 💟 plaid🏁, vertical 🐠stripes🍿, 🐅animal prints🐆, 🔸️mod abstracts🔹️ polka dots🐞 🔬Experimenting w/different ways to bring in a small pop of pattern or color that suits me. Maybe in a wrap|shawl, vest|tunic|waistcoat, hairband, scarf, sash, cuff, buttons, piping, etc. ☘Good luck...

I find op shopping (charity shopping?) the best way to experiment with your style and explore what you like, especially on a budget. I have ended up with so many fun and creative items! From high quality pieces to really unique handmade items. The best part though, its really easy to re donate if you don't love it! Its basically like renting the clothes then 😂 I have worn dresses once or twice and being able to redonate them guilt free. Now someone else can love them!

Do you need a bra? If you’re not comfortable going without there’s tape for support, nipple covers for modesty and chicken cutlets (those stick on bras, often silicone) that can offer both. I know not everyone can go braless for a variety of reasons, but it’s worth a shot if it could improve your comfort and health.

Right now it is the French style which is just staple basic pieces with a little pop of something. Then I love pieces that stand out. So I my wardrobe wars with itself but I do have most of the pieces in my wardrobe to do these two styles. The only thing is, my lifestyle has changed and I don't get to wear my beautiful pieces much. In this time of covid, we are home a lot and things are dressed down a lot. What's a girl to do?

Slightly envious of those with a strong signature style that seems to flow easily from work into play. Hate "theme" looks for myself. Find fluidity is important. It can feel a bit disjointed otherwise balancing the more formal with the more informal. WFH has changed things. However there is a more strict 9a-5p corporate look that might not translate into the rest of your life. A person can be forced by circumstances to dress in a certain manner for their job, but will choose quite differently for their free time. You might want a dating/clubbing/concert/pm look; a casual outing look; a chore look, a sporty look, a church look, & a special occasion look, etc.

100% agree with all of these tips, especially the ones about not feeling like you have to fit into a particular style category, and the difference between admiring/being inspired by someone's style vs. imitating them directly. These are definitely both things that I've been guilty of (especially when I was younger), and they ended up resulting in a lot of frustration and acquiring pieces that didn't really work for me.

This video spoke to my soul!! I realized I have more tops then I could wear in a month, yet alone before I do laundry. I have “a closet full of cute pieces” there’s tops that I love but don’t ever wear and the reality is there are 20 other tops that I love and will grab before that top. This for me was a slap in the face with the fact that I simply have too much clothes and need to get better at rotating pieces. I bring new pieces in and my old favorites get moved down the list only to never make it back into the pre-laundry rotation. Just because a top is cute and I can make a insta worthy outfit with it does not mean it fits my personal style or life. Love this video and will be keeping theses ideas in mind as I do holiday shopping 💕

I love the 1st point you made, I think it works for almost anyone! I dress vintage, both reproduction and authentic pieces, and I absolutely LOVE the golden age of Hollywood where the women just looked so classy and so put together. I tend to gravitate towards the 30-50s and have almost no modern pieces in my wardrobe anymore. This was exciting because it took so long for me to do this but I also kind of hated the idea of dressing one way forever (even tho I have never felt as pretty or as confident as when I dress vintage). Then I realized it was because I was trying to fit myself into a box, like you said. Most ppl in the vintage community find one era that they like and they tend to stick to it, it wasn’t until I saw videos by MissBeetown, where she dressed vintage from the 30s down to the 70s that I realized, hey! I can do that as well I don’t have to stick to just dressing like the 40s. All of a sudden I felt so much freedom and happiness with my wardrobe, while still aligning myself with my own personal style which was still dressing vintage. Some days I dress in 30-50s very polished and put together...other days I dress 60-70s, or even 90s when I want to be more chill. It makes it so much more fun to experiment with your wardrobe when you don’t fit yourself into a tiny made up box of rules for fashion lol

The things that really worked for me is trying to play with what is in my weardrobe and come up with new ways to wear what I have. Also honing in on those things that I am wearing and not wearing. I go thru my closet at least once a season now and pack things off season away. That way it is easier to have a fresh look at things when I pull them back out. I kinda just pull out things that I know I will be wearing. If I love something but will not wear it I pack it away and eventually I either decide to part with it or put it back into my closet roatation. Over the years I have found that it is the lifestyle I have that I need to have clothes for not the life I want, especially now during lockdown. I recently packed away most of my "nice" clothes to revisit at a later time. If I need them I can get to them easily but they are not in my closet taking up space and mocking me when I get dressed.

urgh god yes. i've only just figured out the 'you don't have to be in a box' thing myself recently. it's so obvious when you step back and think about it. i am eclectic but always felt caught between wanting different styles but not wanting too many things and didn't feel like i could combine them. I ended up really stripping things down for project 333 which was definitely a great start and i ended with with a fab cohesive wardrobe where everything worked with everything but i felt bland as hell and by thinking 'oh this piece doesn't go with my curation it's pointless getting it' that stopped me growing. i think it's also about not being too strict with yourself and recognising when you're in a growth period (either stylistically or waistline) and making space for it mentally and physically

Some days I feel I want to wear something more feminine and flowy and other days I want black and edgy or just jeans and comfort. Why do we say we have to choose one style?? Like if i like classic style I can only by classic items? Or if I love beach boho, I can’t wear anything more tailored! Who makes these weird rules?! Great tips👍💜

One tip is to hang all the hangers backwards. When you wear it, you turn the hanger around. I realized through that process that I never wore the animal print top-really just not me so I would end up not reaching for it. So I donated it along with other stuff.

I'm the opposite....the things I wore 20 years ago I would definitely wear today. I have had the same basic style since my 20's. I do add a few pieces from other styles here & there, but classic, tailored pieces have been my go to since the 90's. I do love the odd flowy or edgy piece, but mostly I wear slacks, button up tops, blazers, shift dresses and knee boots. Things I don't own: jeans, white anything, sneakers, joggers, leggings 🤷 I have never had a huge wardrobe. I started capsule wardrobes in 2005 and found project 333 in 2013. Since 2017 I have only owned 40 pieces that get me through all 4 seasons.

The abundance of clothing brands makes it incredibly hard to develop and maintain a personal style. This powerful industry constantly dictates what is fashionable and what is not, trends change every other day. Garments are purposely made with poor quality so we have to constantly buy new ones. We are supposed to do that to generate profit. Plus clothes look the same pretty much everywhere, especially from all those fast fashion brands which are mostly the ones I can afford at the moment. This makes it incredibly difficult to even find clothes that fit decently and look okay let alone allow me to create my own style.

Thankfully, my fashion style are not that extremely different throughout my teen until now (i'm 30 years old 😄). I always love a casual sporty style, with a slightly big clothes over a big jacket, a skinny tight jeans, and a sneaker. And if i feel more feminime on some days, i'll just wear a skirt or a color of my hijab (i'm wearing hijab btw) that makes me feel prettiest that days. The only change is that nowadays i prefer wearing pants more than jeans, with a straight cut or slightly loose fit, a classic type of shoes (mostly flat shoes), and a color palette that suit my skintone and my lady taste but still in casual terms. I guess i kinda already find my own style(?) 🤷

As a teen myself, right now, my current style seems almost exactly the same as what you wore in the past. I feel comfortable in causal/streetwear, I don't really like "dolling up" or making a big deal out of my outfit. But as I get older and enter college I realize that I need more variety in my wardrobe so I at least have something different in my closet when a causal style is not appropriate. I also have never felt comfortable wearing dresses or skirts without some form of shorts underneath and I would only wear them for special occasions (i.e weddings, family gatherings, or music concerts I performed in). I honestly don't think I'll ever get out of that feeling because I love being active and don't feel myself when my actions are restricted due to clothing. I am curious as to what your relationship with dresses & skirts was like as a teenager, was it similar to mine or completely different?

  • @seruntulbamboo

@@mistmoon1292 actually, for a wedding or some formal event I always choose dresses or skirts. And on some days, like I wrote at the top, if I feel like I want my look to be more feminine I choose to wear skirts (again, in casual ways). But yeah, as I go to college and graduate I always keep 2 skirt to go to the office (cause I've been freelancing since then and on some of my work needs a skirt as a uniform). I hope this would give you the answer 😊

My only issue now is that when I wear my preppy/sophisticated style it looks expensive (because it’s good quality pieces I invested in) but my sporty style is a lot more relaxed and casual. So sometimes people who are first getting to know me notice when I wear my casual style for the first time and they think I’ve “changed” my style
