THIS is why you artwork gets blurry / pixelated in Procreate

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I hear about this issue pretty much every single day. In this video i'll show you how I avoid pixelation and blurry lines when I don't want them to be blurry or pixelated. Lots of times I actually do, its part of what makes procreate special. #procreate #arttips #tutorial

I gotta learn how to not zoom in and then drawing "big" and wonder why everything is pixelated and not smooth when I know that brush should be smooth. You zoom back out and it's a TINY drawing.

Yep, it's tricky for me sometimes.. I'll doodle, and then I'll go into detail and be an hour in and then.. Oh no it's tiny! I'm pretty careful about it nowadays 👍🏾 🤗

This is the best explanation of “why” procreate illustrations result in blurry images! Thank you for taking the time to elaborate, in detail, as to why this happens! I have been encouraged! ☺️

Thanks Dave…new to using procreate. Drew a figurative sketches, the more I work and used many different brushes and blending I noticed some obvious pixelation. This explains the technical aspect behind why I am losing quality. I’ve got a lot to learn - but definitely enjoying using - like all art forms it’s a work in progress.

Yep, it just takes some getting used to. Interestingly enough I always compare it to how I used to draw traditionally. It was always the same size once you started on paper so always appeared the same unless you accidentally smudge your hand across it ☠️. The ease of zooming is nuts these days on digital, so I have a tendency to want to get every fine detail perfect when back in the day using pencil, you did what you could and focused on the whole thing overall. That + being aware of digital limitations, I rarely worry about pixelation these days 👍🏾💯💯

Those are the specs I use for pod services (mostly teepublic, redbubble, and the sticker sites!) The only thing to be careful of is the physical print quality. POD services quality control and printers aren't the best at time... For example many of the shirts from teepublic can be a little fuzzy, even in the same batch then I get a few of the same designs, so I reach out to customer service and they replace the misprinted ones! 👍🏾

Hi Dave, thanks for this video. I’m having an issue with a figure I drew in Procreate where the project canvas is 2550x3300 pixels and the line drawing maximizes the height. The problem I’m having is when I resize the figure in Transform, to be VERY small. The figure is almost completely destroyed as it lacks most all detail with lots of missing pixels. How do I make a line drawing so the lines are in tact at a very small reduction? Your help would be most appreciated. Thanks Dave!

  • @drugfreedave

Yep, that happens. They just degrade when getting smaller because the pixels can't get any smaller. Think of it more like a traditional painting.. You may have to use tricks to get an effect of something rather than the perfect image. At a certain point it'll just be a pixely blur!

Hi Dave, thanks for the video. Could I ask you please, what is the biggest possible canvas size I can make in procreate. In cm and pixels? ( I really get confused with this stuff!) I am wanting to print out at something like a1 size. I am making kind of abstract oil paintings in procreate. I’m assuming if I want to print at a1 the document needs to be set up at a1? ( and also 300 dpi for a crisp print?) Grateful of any help Dave. Thank you Sean.

I'm not sure what the biggest size is.. The bigger it is the less layers you have. But you're on the right track. Set the size and use 300dpi and you should be good to go!

Thanks for the video! I know you said this is the nature of a raster-based program, but I have a drawing with many smaller flowers that I want to duplicate rather than draw each one separately. I take a flower, duplicate it, slightly rotate it or flip it to make it a bit different and it's much more blurry than the original. Having significant pixel damage like this on a simple single rotation is kind of crazy to me. Is there any way to avoid this? I'm not scaling up, just simply rotating once. Photoshop is a raster-based program and the only time this occurs is if you rescale something larger than it is, obviously. So clearly not all rater-based programs are like this. Am I missing something in Procreate? Seems like a big oversight on their part. Thanks!

Btw, if you create your canvas using px, the dpi setting does literally nothing, you could set it to one and have identical quality when creating a canvas in px. Cause DPI is a calculation of px and the size of what you're printing to, which means if your canvas is in px, your dpi will change depending on the size of your print.

My problem with using a bigger canvas size is that it will come out extremely blurry on social media when I try to post it because of resizing and cropping issues especially on instagram where the px size is 1080x1350 but on that size I can’t squeeze in any details to a drawing. How do you handle something like that?

I have a question. One KZreadr did her sticker design at procreate and able to make it big then she made it small, and duplicated it, and able to to print it as a stickers. Her lines was clear and not blurry. And I copy what she did. But when I print out my sticker designs it’s blurry. What she use is scrip and monoline. From calligraphy. I would draw it big and shrink it to duplicate it as many. And duplicate also show every line I draw is blurry. (Showing on the canvas and when I print it) I hope I explain it. Her KZread video is how I make my sticker by Nichol Grace) that way you know why I mean. I appreciate it you can please help me.

I can't stand trying to start without seeing the top left-hand corner's edge of the canvas. When my vision is filled with canvas, my already poorer sense of scale hurts. But at the same time, I want space around my image because I don't know what I'm going to do with the pose or background.

I have that issue is well - I think it's just the affect of the raster program. I also have issues when copying/pasting from one project to another. Two things I hope they can improve somehow. I find that some things look better drawn small (if they're going to be small) this way they'll look as they should by design rather than looking more/randomly pixelated by shrinking. Post this question to my procreate Facebook group! Maybe someone out there has some tricks I don't know about 🤔 👍🏾 facebook.com/groups/ProcreateDrawingTutorials/?ref=share
