THIS IS WHY we couldn't take the narrowboat on the River Severn (feat. the Severn Bore)
We are stopped from going on the River Severn today by a high tide. When there is a high tide on the River Severn it creates the Severn Bore which is often used by surfers to 'catch a wave'.
We are grateful to droneace services Gloucester for supplying the footage of the surfers at the bore. Please check out their Facebook page and say 'hi' from us.

I thought that the severn bore were 7 people you wouldn't invite to tea . Cheers from California !
My favourite part, "Who me, I wasn't angry" then complete silence with a blank stare. Laughed so hard, played it 3 or 4 times. thanks :))
A bucket on a rope. Oneof those 21st century high tech delivery systems.

Whatever works. 😃
There was a time Annamarie was very anxious about river cruising but look at you two now, both proper sailors!
Heartened to see you wearing your PDFs. Not that I hold a lot of sway, but that would be my preference :)
Ah Yay! You are on the Gloucester Sharpness Canal. I did mention I s comment on one of your earlier Avon videos that you would love it. Hope you go as far as Sharpness. Happy memories for me. We adopted a dog from Patch Bridge, her master, the bridge keeper had passed away and his wife couldn't keep her. She was 11, we thought we'd have her for a couple of years but she lived til well into her 19th year. Her name was Susie a black and tan collie who took her job on the bridge very seriously, barking when she heard the bell ringing for the bridge to be opened. She was a bit of a legend amongst boaters back then ❤️❤️
That large river vs the smaller cannel is an exciting change. The new wearable flotation devices are so much smaller and much more comfortable.
Kath is an awesome captain, nonchalantly sipping her tea in that massive lock. Admire her “level head and hundreds of hours of experience”. I really love tagging along on your trips.
Special is it, 4 times a year high tide on a coastal river. Rivers like the Amazon can have one of 25 feet high! Not a narrowboat wave. Loved to come with you, thanks for this journey.
Kath! Now there is a river with great sense starts in Wales and when it goes to have a look at England, heads straight back to Wales 🤭

I'm laughing because it's true :)
Having boated on the Mississippi river many times, there was nothing more frightening than submerged logs that were just deep enough to be invisible on the surface, but shallow enough to bugger up a wooden boat. Your trip brought back a few heart-stopping memories.
That lock was enormous, felt like you were entering the outer defensive walls of a castle complex. And the message in a bucket, love it!

The locks from the IJsselmeer to the Wadden Sea are even bigger, but you wouldn’t be in those with a narrowboat. We were in a 48 foot cabin cruiser sailboat (significantly higher freeboard, width, and draft) the one time when we sailed over the North Sea to Lowestoft, and a slightly smaller one on up to Helgoland the year before. Those locks are quite something.
As a young man I worked on log rafts floating up and down the rivers near my home on the Pacific Northwest coast of the United States. Those partially submerged trees or logs are called deadheads. Just like the fans of the rock/folk band, the Grateful Dead. LOL! Safe travels ladies. I thoroughly enjoy your channel.
Great vlog Ladies you handled all the tricky bits extremely professionally. The Severn has the second highest tides in the world after my river the Saint John where spring tides will rise and fall around 36 feet .We even have a set of rapids that reverse their flow ,Navigating them is only possible at slack water, not a long interval but we don't have Locks to contend with. My boats are high and dry now for the winter so I look forward to your posts even more for watery adventures Take care be safe .Thank you ,Cheers from Saint John NB Canada
I saw you guys on "Crusing the Cut", you were kindly helping David with the locks
What a wonderful day for a boat ride. Thanks for sharing.
Well, that popped up out of nowhere! I really enjoyed it. So much so that I've subscribed. Many thanks, Don.
Thank you for the VIEW and the ride ladies. As always great trip thanks. Stay safe.
Excellent prep and steering. You both make a great team togeather. Hope you got some well earned rest. Thanks for sharing another informative vlog. Stay safe and have fun and enjoy the freedom's that a boat can bring. best thought's and wishes.
Thanks again. Love your videos
I always enjoy your videos. Very relaxing
Just a wonderful video ladies! Can't wait to explore with you. Hugs to all. Be safe.
thank you for the wonderful vlog
Love watching you guys and your adventures keep it up xx
Hi both enjoying your trip, just thought as you are on the river 7 to give you a mention of the rescue organisation called seven area rescue (Sara) they cover the area you are in starting there is one at Upton upon seven , Tewkesbury and further on down towards Bristol
This was really nice. Very mellow.
A very helpful and informative lock keeper.
Thanks for posting. Really great video
Wow, what an incredible journey! There was so much packed into this vlog, i think i’ll watch again. Thank you for all the details, it really was fascinating. Loved the “Hangry Humor”!
This came up completely randomly. Watched the lot!!! Smashing stuff!!! Paul
omg that was just brilliant watching you guys do this and Kath 100 % for your driving. and WOW those locks are so hugh.
Can’t wait for the new canal exploration! Well done Kath on driving into those locks. Love your vlogs. They make my Sunday! Happy thanksgiving from Canada!🇨🇦👍❤️
Great video. You make rivers look so peaceful but I know I'd be a mess the entire time worrying about where and how to safely moor. Thanks for taking me along.
Really enjoyed the vlog I have fished the seven with my father in the 60s have seen the bore very dramatic thankyou ladies please stay safe both of you and the cats
Great footage of the Bore, both. It’s very predictable so don’t let it stop your progress for long.

I remember the bores from the mid 1960s when I sailed from the Avon Sailing Club, next to what is now the Yew Tree Inn, a mile or so down stream from Tewkesbury. The Cheltenham College sailing club had 4 "National 12" dinghies. Most times when the bore came through, it was only a foot or two, maybe three, feet tall. If you were heading upstream at the time in your race, and you were a bit cunning, you could catch the front of the bore and be taken upstream, overtaking all the other boats that didn't catch the wave. Some of the adults, with faster boats, got very p'd off to be passed by 15 year old kids 😁😁 Good memories
Thanks so much for sharing your cruise I think you are both very brave good luck
Hello Kath and Annamarie, Thank you for another great cruise vlog. My Dad lived in Gloucestershire (Cheltenham, specifically) a long time ago, and I really appreciate that portion of the Severn and Gloucester itself. I look forward to seeing your vlogs on the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal, as I remember it was an engineering marvel when it first was built. (Marjorie/Marje)
We are South Australians and were going to fly to England in July to do the Avon Ring. Unfortunately, our trip was cancelled. We have been watching your travels and have really appreciated your terrific commentary. Thankyou so much for the fantastic Vlogs, we really look forward to watching them. Cheers Natalie and Stuart
Thanks guys ❤️😊🏴👍
Hi Liked being with you as you went down the Seven I use to live in Bristol years ago. Now living on the east coast of Vancouver Island.
That lock at the beginning was massive and looked like some strange almost-a-winding-hole thingy in it. I really do love your channel as it is a great way to spend a wee bit of my Sunday. Can't wait to see the further adventures.
Enjoyed that ladies, carry on safely , looking forward to the next Vlog
First time I’ve watched any of your adventures, only saw it because of the surfing content ... but I really enjoyed your little film... I’ve paddle boarded and canoed this part of the river many times and have been surfing then bore for 12 years .... I can be seen on your video surfing the wave on the left hand side with the blue and green flashes on wetsuit ... well done both ... so enjoyed then vid 😊
Great video thank for sharing keep safe both 👍
Great video, recommended by KZread because I follow CruisingTheCut! I live in Gloucester and have lost count the number of times I have driven down that road above the wall on approach to the lock and driven on the road over the lock. Always looked over at the river and wondered what it was like to enter the docks!
A breath of fresh air
Another interesting vlog girls.....that was brilliant driving by Cath....making it look easy...stay safe.....thanks for sharing
Thanks for such an interesting trip.
We used to moor our first Narrowboat at Sharpness, watching this reminded me of collecting the boat from the Marina you purchased Lazy Days from and travelling down. I was very apprehensive of getting to Gloucester lock as I read all sorts of horrible stories, but like you I got good instructions and it was simple. You should ensure you get to Sharpness friendly people and outstanding views over the Severn. Really enjoy your videos, thanks.
Really enjoyable ride.
Nice to see my own country appearing before me. The G&S is a very special canal with smashing folk. Hope you had a lovely time. The makers of His dark materials filmed this canal and CGied into the mystic area you can see on the film.
Luv your cats 😺😺😺😺
Fantastic adventures, great driving, looking forward to being back on the canals with you both :)
Ah Gloucester, my home city. You'll love wandering around the docks. Looking forward to future vlogs.
Nice to get a brief glimpse of the cats More please! Really enjoyed hearing the chat with the lock keeper and seeing his bucket. Very practical. Very handsome Swan. That log right in the middle of the river reminds me of that classic photo of Nessie. I love the way you two are full of helpful tips and you always do the right thing (like following instructions). Thanks for another great one ladies.
Glad you came here, sorry we missed you both. Kane wanted to say his to his portrait painter. So the G&S is as wide as the river in parts, at least the bridges are all manned. It's funny, you were spotted when you got to Gloucester...... we got a message from another NB you were moored by. Small world this boating lark.
Well done girls, enjoyed your vlog. Looking forward to your next one.
Hello ladies from Australia, we watch you regularly and love your work.
It's always a pleasure charting your journeys in Google map...on a Sunday morning from Florida, USA...of course with a cup of coffee. Well done!
Enjoyed very much thanks 👍🏴
WOW! this was a big one.
Can’t wait till next cruise!!!
Well done you two what a journey you have had. So looking forward to your next blog think you will be so safe again take care bet Kath will be looking forward to taking the tillerbar of take care
Glad to have caught you on my home canal, even moored nxt to my boat. As I was heading up to Tewkesbury. Seems such a time ago since our conversation about solar panels. Carnt wait for more vlogs
Very cool!
Thank you for an enjoyable vid, I guess there is a lot more of those logs under water than what you can see like an ice berg
All those people waiting to say hello to you and all they got was a load of silly surfers! What a disappointment! It looked like you were making good speed down the river. Thanks again girls! Stay safe.
Fun to see the locals surf 🏄🏻♀️ that high tide moment. 👍
Thanks for the ride, some river ! Severn Bore ain't boring, LOL
Found you through "Cruising the Cut." Wonderful!
Great video, it has been a while since I have seen it and surfed it.
Awesome vid. I was transfixed throughout. It was so informative and interesting. That floating tree stump looked like an enormous crocodile waiting for Lazy Days to pass by 😱
The Heron that you showed around 12:24 looks very similar to a species of bird we have out here in Oakland California (West Coast of America) called the Black Crested Night Heron, part of the "Neckless" heron specie. So cool. Also, I would be so scared being on a river like that on a narrow boat, of course I have no experience with such things, but still, that is awesome that you all are doing that. Thank so much for the videos, they have been keeping me sane through the chaos of this year, or at least more towards sane.
Morning welcome to Gloucester my home town lovely film down the river its nice to see the view from the river. Yes the bore is amazing to see further on down the river. Enjoy the canal down to sharpness l am sure you will call in at saul Junction.👍👍
It looks so big compared to the canals you are brave girls xxx
Let's go surfing now. Really nice video!
Very good video‼️
Gloucester Cathedral is an absolute gem...if you don't know the story of Edward the 2nd then a visit there will put you straight!

Yes, his demise at Berkeley Castle was an unfortunate and painful way to die too. 😣
Great vlog. I was looking at the ladder to climb out of the first lock and I know, without a doubt, that I could never shin up that. I think sometimes you are quite brave. Keep safe. Hugs.
Hi Love your videos, especially the current one on the river Severn on the way to Gloucester. Our favorite place was Gloucester docks, please please in your next video show you exiting the lock into the docks, we always found it a super moment. Also on the Sharpness canal, the Patch is a great mooring with Slimbridge wildfowl trust only a short walk away. Best wishes Chris and Claire
wow, quite scary. I can understand you looking forward to the safety of a canal again.
Really interesting vlog. We also have a closed bow boat but I secure our anchor at the bow as I read an anchor thrown off the stern can pull the stern down in some circumstances and flood engine bay. Not sure I’d cope with running down gunwale in an emergency though so maybe should do same as you.
As usual great stuff like to know the history of that huge lock. Also, the English countryside is so beautiful
I live between the Severn and the Wye and I’m looking forward to what you make of our local area.
A rope (or two) across your solar panel could dramatically reduce the panel efficiency and output. Depending on how the cells are arranged covering one small cell could reduce an entire chain. A few low profile hooks at the side would keep the rope neatly bypassing the panel.

@@t1n4444 I have just heard them talk about it on an early vid put out some months ago. I went to the end to post the comment so in time will see everyone else commenting. Just trying to be helpful. I will now go back many months to enjoy the journey. Thanks for the in depth explanation.
I've been thinking of the stained tea mug you featured in a previous vlog and here's a couple of cleaning solution: Fill mug with lukewarm water stir in level teaspoon of Oxyclean powder, leave overnight. Mug sparkling in the morning! A cheaper but more involved solution if you don’t have Oxyclean is to look for an old lady who's wearing false teeth. Knock her over and whilst she’s down steal a Steradent tablet from her purse. Again drop this in a mug full of water and leave overnight for the same sparkling result. Please Note: Don’t be a meany and steal the lady’s money as they always count this, but trust me they never count their Steradent tablets. So if you are caught you can always say it was an accident, crumbling to dust the evidence in your pocket whilst telling the officer you were looking in her purse for smelling salts. It works every time for me. Try not to target the same old lady twice there are a couple in our village that cross over the road now when they see me. What can I say, I drink a lot of tea. Thanks for the vlogs.
Mythe Bridge is said rhyming with Knive 😉 love seeing my local area, Upperlode Lock is such a big place
Props for the life vests.
A nice trip om the river.
It's time to find a good spot and park up for the new lockdown. A place well away from joggers & dog walkers, near a water point & shops.
Well done. I felt scared for you 😄
1:30 being on a canal right next to the tidal ouse in yorkshire we get some high tides and no boats are allowed through the lock ( sometimes for weeks) BUT we don't get a wave like that one..... pity.
I would have turned back also….until I heard the surfers were coming then I would have kept going….😂😂😂😂😂
Great video Ladies, well done. I know Gloucester docks well. The town isn't up to much these days but the docks used to be interesting. Unfortunately with the Lockdown regs it will probably be a bit quiet. Take care. Regards Michael
Hello both well it has been over a year since I have watched yours David Fiona and Emma and silver fox but to name a few that over the years have got to watch and like very much your hair looks really nice and long now you all take care 😀🎄
The surfers riding the bore...fantastic
One of the severn swans a swimmin', a goode sign that christmas is coming.
Glad it was an uneventful journey. Very well skippered!
Wow! that was some HUGE LOCK (caps for dramatic effect lol). Great vlog girls - looked pretty choppy but you handled it.
I enjoy cruising with you girls👍.
