I agree 100% with Felicia's point. I believe that I messed up my hair by following every thing I saw on KZread. I was following ppl who's hair didn't look like mine.

Anthony Dickey is the man! I believe he just graciously checked somebody. Some black hair stylists have done some shaming regarding 4- kinky hair types. Many of them have been black women. Black men have more experience with natural hair. Hence, the barber shop was a big part of my journey.

I have been burned figuratively and literally by stylists more times than I ever have through my own trial and error and watching KZread. My type 4a natural hair requires time and patience, more time and patience than any stylist has been willing to give. After being natural for the past 14 years, no stylist can style, care for, or maintain my hair better than I can. I will never, ever sit in a stylist chair again. The closest I will come is a barber, a MALE barber.

Wow I am so thankful for the guest and the channel for bringing this conversation to the community. I am in love with black people right now :) We are embracing our versatility and admitting that we need education instead of placing a "bandaid" on how we approach our hair. My mom passed away but she would have loved to be a part of this journey.

Thank you for having the session, I learned a lot. I use to relax my hair but always wanted to return to natural. I mentioned this to a salon stylist and she said " There are chemicals for that" I was shocked at her response. The idea to go natural , for me, is using products to enhance and help, not change my hair to a texture that is not mine naturally. I would love to go to a stylist who has the mind set of the panel. Sun Spear A lot of Black hair dressers think that way and respond with the use of chemicals. The best thing dryer and kinkier textures can do is to explore products that work for your hair. Salons just want your money, thats it.

I'm a licensed stylist and this is a much needed forum!

I am 60 years old and I truly come from the time of the choice was relaxing your hair the choices we had on the shelves was heavy grease products and if you were natural your hair was being pressed so now we have s many more products and people really trying to understand our har types s go forth and love yourself and your hair no matter what you choose.

I can't believe this post has only received roughly 5,490 views! With all the issues and concerns in the natural hair community, I'm surprised that more people haven't watched this. That's a shame.

The title doesn't make you think it's about natural hair

Amen! Part of the reason why woc have been going natural is because of the frustrations of being overcharged and mistreated at the hair salons, but the problem is most of us are lost because our mothers, aunties never shared what they did to our hair when we were younger. Or for me, as an older woc, my hair texture has changed due to hormones/menopause, so the products I used to use don’t work for me and my hair is very sensitive and traumatized, so thank you all for addressing these issues!

I’ve followed Anthony for a minute. He’s the truth. He understands hair.

I never use salons due severe allergies. It's impossible to expect a salon to be able to cater for that. I've got to do my own hair. I was also aware that if somehow I grew out of my allergies it would still be a hefty price for me to go based on hair thickness and length. Mother and big sis are happy to go to salons. The only problem mother has with her salon that does cater for natural black hair is that their time management is bad and disregard for the client's time. Once they booked her for an appointment first thing in the morning but when she got there the salon was still shut. She actually waited an hour for everyone to come and open up the place. They said they'd had a party the night before. I wouldn't have waited. If a salon says they're going to be open as a set time then I expect them to be there. I'd give them a few minutes leeway and if there's no communication or even notice on the salon door explaining that they will be opening later than usual that day then I'd be looking for a new salon.

Awesome panel of professionals. I hope i can find stylist of the same caliber or at least attitude toward natural hair in my area.

Some Dominican hair salons put stuff in “ conditioners “

I always felt as a stylist you should be able and willing to do all types of hair. You are only limited your money that could go in your pockets.

Thank you so much for this video. It addressed some concerns I've been having regarding salons and doing my own hair. After having almost butt length hair, it was destroyed by a stylist. From that experience I learn to just do my own natural hair. I can say the clues were there along with being charged extra for my length and texture. At that time I thought it was normal. My texture is 3b and 3c.

Anthony, I get both splits and knots! 😩 Soooooooo interesting to hear how their schools didn’t even really have mannequins with textured hair, but yet our texture is at times hated the most! 🤔 Why not teach them to style it, if the texture is so unacceptable? However, oooooh weeeee to relax my hair without a discussion, that’s a lawsuit!!! 🤭🤯😩😡😤🤦🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️🙅🏽‍♀️

Thank you all so much for your time to explain to us your personal experiences with your clients. It was very informative! That was so wrong for that stylist to put a relaxer in a naturals' hair without her requesting it. That is wrong. I have been discriminated against in African-American hair salons in Atlanta when I used to get a relaxer because I had very long and thick hair. They would charge me more just to do my hair. The excuse they used was that it took a long time for my hair to dry. I told them then that - that was dead wrong to charge me more because my hair was long and thick and it took a long time to dry.

I enjoyed this session. Looking forward to NC perfecting the procedure and having more conversations like this. And Felicia... Please do come to NYC!

Yes my 6yr old daughter has been wearing a satin cap. I also have used a satin pillowcase.

I enjoyed this... because I definitely have paid over 100 for a trim. I won’t ever do that again. They claimed my hair was thick and took longer to do. I won’t accept that excuse again. Smh I plan to do a consultation before I go into a salon from here on out. I wish I would have seen this earlier.

Good products is key. You can style your hair well, but if your products are crap you will tell the difference.

Excellent discussion, really liked the guests. I respectfully disagree with the idea that stylists should not charge for density/length etc. This is really a MANAGERIAL ACCOUNTING issue. The cost of servicing these clients is more - use more product, more water, more staff, more electricity (heat) for drying etc. Salons who do not adjust for these factors are operating their services at a loss (discount).

Interesting information. Haven't been to a hairdresser/stylist in over 20 years. And don't do chemicals, weaves or wigs. Also don't do color or intricate styles that take a lot of maintenance. I keep it natural, short and simple. Learned to love and do my hair with natural care products. Sadly many see their natural hair negativity and don't put in the work to care for it.

My question, if i might ask and get the answere, are there natural products for kinky, coiled hair that have few ingredients that actually works? Example, as far as foods: when i want a natural apple juice, i go to the store, read the ingredients and chooses the one that says "ingredients: apples and distilled water (nothing else added) Done. Can i get a conditioner that says juju berries, water and honey for curls:). I know im pushing it but I DON'T like all those scientific words on the bottle of products in my head.

I don’t know why people have such an issue with “chemicals” as though chemicals are harmful. Not everything that’s made in a lab is bad for you. That’s just a marketing tactic to get you to buy more products that claim natural ingredients.

Remember that salt is sodium chloride and water is dihydrogen monoxide. Don't let 'those scientific words' scare you :D

It's hard to find a stylist that can straighten your hair without causing heat damage. Big Mama use to press my hair every two weeks and never got heat damage. Come wash day my hair still shrunk to the gods and stringy ends where........?! 4C all day.....

Their job is to please the client, period.😊

As a fine-haired 2C/3A, I also have these issues. The conversation seemed to be very focused on the kinky/curly group. But my whole life, I've battled stylists who assume I want or like to straighten. I seem to be stuck in the middle...not curly enough for the "natural hair" convo, but too curly for straight!

Julianne Meisen Felicia touched stylist being educated on what product that works well for curly to kinky. As a matter of fact it hasn't been that long since there has been styling product geared towards coily/kinky texture. When i was in high school latino women with your texture had no problem with condtioner and some mouse so its a bit puzzling why stylist didnt know what to do with your natural texture. And based on the form of their converstation they're not omiting other textures there covering wide spectrum of hair concerns.

Black women should just go to Black Salons. Most places have these!
