I listened to what other people said about the book, especially if they raved about it. Then I took note of the type of people raving about this book, the people that I knew. Then, when my son didn't read it because it wasn't his thing after he scanned his wife's copy of it I knew it would be a hard pass. He said that the writing was on a middle school level. His wife raved about it, tried many times to get him to read it, yet he still took a pass. My son values the little time he gets for reading books so that was a good barometer for me. That, and many people besides him said the writing was sophomoric. I don't make time for sophomoric books either. Sophomoric books bore me. even if they are supposed to be the newest IT read, screamingly tantalizing and OTT sexually explicit, as per all the ravers.
