Just came back from stargazing yesterday! It was my first time hunting a meteor shower and although it was a lovely night, I couldn't help but think that I was doing something wrong since I didn't see as much as the research I did suggested. This makes me feel a lot better!

I saw a meteor shower last night hat had a full red tail and lasted a few seconds.

The incredibly high number of meteors per hour is also calculated for the radiant point, or perseus in this case, being at the zenith (directly overhead)

I just came back from watching it! Saw about 10 and I was there for an hour Bortle 6 no clouds no moon got caught in my picture too!

Yes you're right, i saw around 10 meteor in a period of 30 min

Showers can vary greatly from year-to-year, from one shower to another, or even from hour-to-hour. When I was in high school in the '70s, a friend and I used to go out to a farm a few miles outside of town and spend the night watching the various showers throughout the year. Sometimes there were only a couple meteors per hour, but on a good night we might see an average of one per minute for part of the night. Approximately 20 years ago I went out to a farm owned by some friends to watch the Leonids. I spent the night alternately looking at various things with my cheap telescope and lying on my cot just watching the sky. About 3:00 am I climbed into my sleeping bag, laid down on my cot, and spent the rest of the night just watching the sky. At this point I had been seeing maybe 1 meteor every 3-5 minutes. About the time the eastern sky was just starting to get light the meteor count picked up drastically, to the point where I estimated I was seeing approximately 3 meteors per second! This was the first time I truly understood what the term "radiant" means, in relation to a meteor shower, as meteors were flying out in all directions from one point in the sky. This little meteor storm lasted for 1 to 2 minutes and then quickly died off. As the sky got lighter, I packed up and headed for home, feeling that the last couple minutes of observing had made the whole, cold night completely worthwhile.

Hi, thank you for sharing your video of the Perseids meteor shower. I enjoyed watching it and hearing your thoughts. I agree that the media can sometimes overhype these events and create unrealistic expectations. However, I also think that there are many factors that can affect how many meteors you can see, such as the weather, the location, the time, and even your own eyesight. I watched the Perseids from a dark field in Sneek, Friesland, Netherlands on the night of August 12 to 13, and I was lucky enough to see about 40 meteors per hour. It was a beautiful sight and I enjoyed every moment of it. The next major meteor shower will be the Geminids in December, which are also known for their bright and colorful meteors. I wish you a wonderful experience with the Geminids in December, and I hope you enjoy the beauty of the night sky. I understand that different media outlets may have different views on how spectacular the meteor showers are, but I think the best way to judge is to see for yourself. Yes the amount of time I've spent outside with wife, daughters and grandchildren all getting bored saying" when are they coming" makes you feel like giving up, and when they go inside to watch tele, you spot one and it makes you feel like your a kid again seeing your first one .

Hi Damon, Good Video! Thanks for calling attention to the 100/h meteor issue. Can we also discuss the “peak” day also being an anomaly? It drives me crazy. The peak day is defined by the timing midpoint from when our planet enters and exits a dust or asteroid belt. (Example: we enter the belt Monday, exit Friday and this makes Wednesday the peak) These belts of dust and bits are NOT mapped for density and therefore Tuesday or Thursday from our example are actually capable of outperforming Wednesday. The concept of missing that “peak” due to clouds or our availability is kinda totally wrong. You’re the only KZreadr to dare to question NASA so I had to vent a little. PS: the 42 series is fun!

Thank you for producing this video. Many years ago I lived far enough outside a huge city and the night sky was good considering the closeness to this huge city to the south below the horizon . For about a week I did what you did in this video and just look at the night sky for around 2 hours at time. I did see a few meteors that was ok to see. After around 3 nights of this I was rewarded with a truly spectacular sight of what I think was a re-entering Satellite from east to west slightly in the north from zenith. It re-entered about 45 degrees above the horizon in the east and broke up into many parts a bright white and continued to about 45 degrees above the west horizon so this thing covered around 90 degrees of the sky and it was just fantastic to witness. Where I lived then is on top of a hill, the highest for about 50km so I got a good view of the night sky with some slight light pollution from the City below the south horizon. And also a great view during the daytime as well. lucky me. BTW. I am in Australia and we get a great view of the Milky Way Keep up the great work and thanks again.

Sat in my back garden until 3 am and saw 9, there’s a big oak tree in my garden which blocks half the sky and of course my house too, so I could only really see a quarter of the sky. Still cool, though 😂

Thank you for producing this video. Thought there was something wrong with me! 4 to 5 hours of viewing over the past two "peak" nights and only a few meteors seen and none photographed. Nice to learn that showers are "over hyped".

Was out riding my motorcycle last night and pulled over once I saw 2 or 3. Sat on a side road in the countryside for 2 hours taking it all in. The highlight of the night was seeing 3 in under 10 seconds, didn't realize how lucky I was on how many I saw total until today. Definitely sparked a new interest. Have been checking out telescopes today because of it and taking in videos like these. Thank you for putting out lots of high quality videos for newly interested people like myself!

Last night I spent 2 hours watching and the result was great, i saw 15 meteors and I was very excited, even though my place is quite cloudy but it's great.🌠

I don't know if anyone else saw it, but I saw a meteorite that lasted about 3 seconds to disappear, I was lying on the ground when it appeared, I saw it continue to descend (I stopped seeing it because I had the roof in front) it gave me time to get up and still see it falling, it must have fallen very close to me, it was a big one! I saw 18 meteors in 1 hour and something.

1/30, iso 512,000, f/1.8. Will try and record some Meteors in 1080p 120fps next time. I'm doubtful that it will produce a nice image but would be cool to make the meteors last a little longer!

i onlu saw 2 satellites @ Denmark .. clouds suuucks :D

yesterday it was cloudy so i had no change to see it :(

I was out last night and saw quite a few good ones, but my camera captured none. They all seems to be appearing just out side my camera’s view of view😢

I saw 9 in 55min from 4:00 to 4:55 and I captured 1

Yeah it’s so annoying. For me there were periods of time where the entire sky was covered in clouds but after about 15 minutes it cleared up

As a fellow astronomer You set your camera wrong it was not facing full sky and was facing in one small portion so pls next time don't face your camera on a small portion We will see some meteors And it will not capture enough Cheers mate

Very overrated and I just saw one tonight although a very nice view of Saturn rising.I was only out for about an hour and a half so probably would have seen more had I been out all night but I need to sleep!

Right, so overrated, sat out for an hour last night and saw five, boo. Usually see about the same with my refractor.
