This is what the German citizenship test should REALLY look like | Meet the Germans
Forget memorizing the German constitution and all the state capitals. If you want to become a German citizen, this is what you really need to know. Is Rachel Stewart up to the challenge of the alternative Einbürgerungstest?
Rachel is on a mission to investigate the quirks and idiosyncrasies of daily life in Germany. Every two weeks she explores a new topic - from beer to nudity to complicated grammar - and heads out to get some tips from the Germans themselves.
Rachel moved from the UK to Germany in 2016. As a relative newcomer she casts a fresh eye over German clichés and shares her experiences of settling into German life. You'll find more from Meet the Germans on KZread or at dw.com/MeettheGermans.

A few tips: you want to have stable, heavy stuff scanned first (like tin cans, cardboard packages, water bottles), so you can put stuff that you don't want to be crushed on top (vegetables, bread, chips, pudding, eggs). Put everything that's frozen together, this helps maintaining them cold and you have an easier time finding them at home to put them back into the freezer. Same goes for stuff that goes into the fridge.

Brilliant! You nailed it with this one!
I love it when I see the cashier already scanning the next customers stuff while the previous customer is still packing and standing in the way.. this will stress out the customer who now is already behind the cashier by a few products and if that customer wont catch up with the cashier by the end of his "turn" he will have brought eternal shame on himself.

So wunderbar, wie sie uns erfasst. Herrlich!
Things must have changed a lot since 1996 when I left Germany. The supermarket cashiers were not in a race against the clock then. Some would even help customers in unexpected ways, such as breaking the seal on a bottle for a frail senior citizen, or even being offered an open purse by a customer for the cashier to take out the correct amount due and put any change due back into the purse. As a 'courtesy' German by virtue of marriage, I appreciated the total honesty of the Germans in general. It was usually tempered with kind concern to help me understand how things were done in German society.
Oh my , that one about the Supermarket and the cashier is soooo true lol
Toast is absolutely common for breakfast. There used to be a lot more space at the checkout and by earlier I mean 10 to 15 years ago. So about 15 years ago, the first discounters started to dismantle the loading zone. And it wasn't just a loading zone, there was even a beam in between that you could flip over. So if one person was still packing, the cashier could flip the beam and carry on. I don't know why it was removed either. It doesn't bring much more space and only stress for everyone involved. Some say it was done to reduce the stress on cashiers, but that's clearly not the case. They often still have a time pressure that they may even be warned if they are too slow. At this point also the lie of the free market, because I can't shop anywhere else anyway if all the companies are copying this bad thing and in some areas there is only one supermarket or even only one discounter.

The tea with milk may not belong on everyone’s breakfast table (I prefer coffee in the mornings as well) but it certainly is also a thing here. I always drink black tea with milk and I can’t understand people that don’t. I know it may be depending on where you live because I am from the north and out “culture” is pretty similar to the British in that point. But my whole family and friends as well drink their black tea with milk and some as well to breakfast. I do understand though that this is supposed to be over exaggerated and stereotypical but I just wanted to make that clear.
Well, supermarkets didn't used to be like that 20 years ago. Thanks to Aldi and the other discounters who made the short checkouts popular. I dislike that so much to hurry every time. And I'm confused when I visit other countries, that I do not have to hurry like we do in Germany.

Eating lots of sausages from the different regions without getting sick! Not making jokes about jews and stuff like that (generally no dark humour) Hating US- and UK-politics Finding it totally normal to drive on a highway with 200 km/h and more

Being on time, no better be way too early just in case the other person is there early too.

Johannes Gülker thanks!
That last part is so accurate.
I laughed out loud in the ubahn when the page got turned over and I saw all the artikel :D
Incredible. Simply incredible :)
Referring to the breakfast, there is actually a north south split. In the north most of us germans drink tea while the south prefer coffee instead
Rachel, you are fantastic!
I love articles(is the called an article in Englisch? It would make sense.) Der, die das,... So beautiful:3
In the part of germany where I live confessing your love to pretzels should be neccesary too.
Omg this is absolutely amazing! 😂
Really funny, especially the physical supermarket test. But did you know, that you can get extra points, if you combine this test with our favourite discipline - order - and pack your bag orderly, meaning the heavy stuff goes below so that the bananas are not crushed by the cans and so on ... ? ;-) PS: Look in the commentaries below. A guy named Mickey calls it tetris game level German. Yes, one more has been Germanized. Or shall I say ordernized? ;-)
So i assume in america you set up camp near the register and take a nap until you are ready to go? Half serious question, because all the european countries i visited did not have any significant difference in "register culture" except for no cash ones in belgium for example.
The supermarket scene will be a legend ..!.. Jajajajajajaj....!!
just awesome !!
You’d be surprised how similar Poland is, also I’ve been living in uk for some time now and still don’t get the tea with milk
Ok the supermarket scene was relatable
If you want to be a better german, then try putting your groceries on the conveyor belt at the supermarket in the order you want to pack them in your bag. Also while waiting at the register, mind your banknotes and coins so you don't have to fiddle in your purse endlessly when you need to pay
