  • @tsdobbi

The fact they didn't have a billion locations is likely why they survived the online shopping purge of brick and mortar stores. CompUsa, Fry's, Circuit City all gone. Microcenter persisted and even with less overall demand for brick and mortar, the demand that was left went to microcenter. Even some of the primarily online shops bit the dust like Tiger Direct. I have two Microcenters within a reasonable distance from me. One 20 mins away and one 45 mins away, lol. At one time I had Microcenter, CompUSA, Fry's and a Tiger Direct Warehouse store all within a 20min drive.

@@Casmige Fry's fatal mistakes were a couple of fold. For starters, one of the founding Fry brothers had a gambling addiction. Not only that, but they were in debt with just about every vendor they were buying from. So, they desperately switched to a consignment model before they shut down. They were getting zero products in for a full year before they went out of business. They sold one store (Duluth) to make up the cost and stopped renting another store (Palo Alto) because the rent was too high. They couldn't hide what was clearly there, the store needed to pay back their vendors before they could get any product in. Without their vendors, Fry's was just selling expired gummy worms, water and flash lights. It was pitiful. Source: Was a former Fry's employee from 2018 to late 2019.

As someone who has one MicroCenter within 20 minutes of where I live and another about 45 minutes in another direction, I can confirm that having all those GPUs in stock, and ESPECIALLY at or near MSRP is a huge fluke that Jay got ridiculously lucky with. These things just aren't there for most stores. Problem is that you can't buy everything online according to reviews: headphones? Once I wanted noise cancelling ones decided to buy Bose QC35. Ended with Sennheiser PX550 cause Bose caused weird feeling like pressure on ears and being underwater which was extremelly unfortable. Other time I wanted good enough headphones. Was decided to buy ATH40 something, ended with Grado cause they offered more clear sound. Similar story with keyboards or chair. But today nothing is on the display in PC shops. Best time to go to Microcenter is on a non-holiday weekday morning (preferably Tuesday/Wednesday). Which unfortunately is hard for me because I'd have to take paid time off from my job and leave my house at like 4am to get to the nearest store when it opens. 😄

There used to be on near me (SF Bay Area). Unfortunately they opened it up when Fry's electronics was a strong chain. Heck, I used to work in that Santa Clara store. Didn't realize how lucky we were until people started sharing those memes where it showed the "Build Your Own PC" sign and didn't realize it was a real place.
