This Is What Detroit's Warrendale Neighborhood Looks Like These Days

Warrendale started out as it's own city before being annexed by Detroit. Despite Detroit declining throughout the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's, Warrendale didn't start to decline until the early 2000's due to a change in the state legislature.

Sad that "unintended consequences" like the municipal workers ruling, can completely ruin a nice little middle class community like this one. The Detroit series has been very educational. I believe most of the empty lots are from structure fires (as a retired GR firefighter that's what I always notice in old cities). Even before I left Detroit in 1992, the house behind ours (@ 16:02, 16:13 & 16:20) had burned down. The neighborhood really went to hell after the 2008 recession with a bunch of foreclosures. Hard to believe, but the neighborhood actually looks better now than it did a few years ago!

Considering many of those subdivisions were built 80+ years ago, the ones that are well maintained and groomed are in really good condition. Here in New Zealand we had a huge post WW2 building boom and styles are remarkably similar to these homes, so similar it’s like they came out of the same IKEA box.

Copper Canyon is more like across the Rough River from Brightmoore.

Good vid. Live around here. The farther north you go from Warren Ave the worse it gets as far as crime goes. You will hear multiple gun shots through out the night in the summer. After Colman Young in the 80s the area really started to decline. By the 90s the blight really kicked off. Its a block by block thing. This particular area can be pretty bad in certain areas but it is cheap to live here and the closer to Dearborn the better. Its alright for singles or couples starting out if they buy/rent south of Tireman and east of Sothfield but the schools are horrible and are in really bad areas so not good for families. Joy Road, murder row, is particularly bad. The middle eastern immigrants have definitely been a small boon to the area by investing in small businesses but there is no real nite life. You can just travel down Eest Warren for food or go to West Dearborn for bars and restaurants. Rouge Park does have a small field that is maintained and used for model airplanes.

It’s all still Detroit here until you pass West Parkway Ave.. but it’s a little better on this side of Rouge Park and better for families. It’s LOTS of kids in this neighborhood. Obviously if you can afford to move west of West Parkway in the suburbs of either Redford (north of Joy Rd) or Dearborn Heights (south of Joy Rd), you’d be best off.

Had amazing teachers from 2nd to the beginning of 7th grade. My sister and I lived with our dad until mother decided to lie to FOC to get custody. Detroit will forever hold my heart! If its in the video I rode my bike there or walked it all and then some. Would i do the same thing today? Maybe if i wasn't 40 and a licensed driver because its still not all that bad. Much like ANYWHERE u go in any hood, any city, there are just certain blocks to avoid.
