This Is The MOST UNIQUE Etrian Odyssey Game To Date (Etrian Odyssey III Retrospective)

Ойындар

In light of the recent Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection rerelease, I decided to finally revisit and play Etrian Odyssey III: The Drowned City to completion. What I found is one of the best dungeon RPGs I've ever played and the most unique Etrian Odyssey title to date. Here's why.

    EO3 definitely makes me sad we never got an Untold remake - as someone who prefers a little bit more story in their games, I think they really could have fleshed out something interesting with the 3 branching story paths for this game. Who knows, maybe we'll get it some day - right now we can only pray we eventually see an EO6.

    ATLUS are definitely working on the next mainline Etrian game - they confirmed that themselves (and that's partly why the HD Remasters exist). I think we'll get 3 Untold down the line after Etrian VI especially as more people will play this game thanks to the remaster. Thanks for watching!

    I think it's mostly because 1 & 2 didn't really have stories, aside from being adventurers exploring stuff, so the Untold versions allowed them to add a storyline. III and IV both had actual storylines, so they would just be adding to already pretty long games.

    1 and 2 aren't without stories. 1 Untold actually starts with one of 1's big late-game reveals, so it's not like there's no wiggle room. Not that the Untold games have particularly deep stories, but I like that your party members can actually have interpersonal relationships and personality beyond tone of voice. Also, I don't think it should be understated how big a deal being given a solid party is for new players. Dungeon crawling veterans can play classic mode or reclass party members.

    I think the main reason that EO3 is difficult is due to how all classes are hyper-focused on one thing and you need to properly think about what your party wants to do. But the thing I like the most about EO3 is how the random NPCs you find in the sea quests are also present in the Butterfly Bistro, which makes the entire world seem much more alive.

    EO games can lack obvious "beginner" party builds yeah. I like the more esoteric classes available in EO games, but it sure would be nice to always be able to fall back on the classic party of tank, melee DPS, magic DPS, healer, and utility. I've said it before, but one of the things I like about the Untold games is how they hand you a viable party, leaving the player only responsible for skill selection. And they let you reclass the characters if you want.

    (Story spoilers ahead) I always found the contrast between the sunny, tropical setting, complete with lots of upbeat music (at least in Armoroad and on the Sailing maps) and the actual story being told - wherein you witness every NPCs Bad Ending path as they continuously die around you - to be very strange. Agata and Hypatia? One is doomed to die, unless you say "No" in every single dialogue option with them, at which point they disappear from the narrative entirely. Does that mean they BOTH die if you refuse to intervene? Do they give up and stop exploring? Who knows! (I'm leaning towards the former, personally, given how the rest of the narratives play out.) Then we have Olympia and Kujura. Kujura dies at your hand in the Deep City ending, and in the Armoroad ending Olympia has her memory banks erased, loses all her autonomy, and stands around the Celestial Palace acting merely as the Mouth of Yggdrasil for the rest of the game. And then there's the Princess and the Abyssal King. Aside from the insultingly obscure hidden ending, you pick a side, and then the major players from the other side become the Final Boss(es), you're forced to kill them, and the NPC you helped is sort of grateful but mostly sad and regretful. I know that "Your Guild rolls into town and really screws things up" is a theme in EO1 (and, to a degree, in EO2 as well), but they really go all-in here. Everything you touch turns to shit and there's no way to prevent it (aside from, again, the finding hidden ending that you need a step-by-step guide to unlock because it's so unintuitive). Also, this game's Yggdrasil is both fully sentient and honestly, kind of a dick. So even the "Big Good" comes across as morally grey. It's wild. As for the gameplay itself, the Classes are a lot of fun (once you wrap your mind around how each one really works and what they offer), but Subclassing? Bleah. Are you using Pysical attacks? Sub Gladiator or you're doing it wrong! Is your class something other than a Physical attacker? Well, now your Subclass choice hardly matters! Oh well, at least they fixed raising the Level cap (now done by beating optional post-game Bosses) and the final stratum strikes a solid balance of being difficult to navigate without going overboard on map gimmicks and/or time-wasting guess-correctly-or-start-all-over teleporters. Limits set the standard for the series going forward, and this initial effort is solid, if a bit limited compared to what you'd get to pick from in EO4 and EO5. Although, I think I prefer the Boost/Break system from EO2 Untold and Nexus personally.

    I always wanted EOIII to get an Untold remake. I always wanted to follow the pattern of having a new class unique to the game + one class from IV. I wanted an Imperial guy to have lost most of his memory, or be attempting to be more antagonistic - Could even have the main duo (Player's controlled one, such as the Highlander/Fafnir) both be girls for fun. Main character could take a more support style for combat, while the other is more aggressive in style. Party members would include; An edgy ninja boy and his doting granny monk (+1 Baddass old lady with heartfelt moments), and either an Arbalist or Gladiator guy that'd be working for them all. I feel the party could work either way with 3 in either row.

    It's not that they're bad, per se, just that they're such a pain to collect they become an extra thing to grind, which also makes them less flexible and intuitive to use since you're limited to what you have, as opposed to just subclassing and having access to your full subclass. It's also not always clear what all of your options even are. They're not fully equippable by any class, and those restrictions are less clear than... just picking a sub class. Plus, many of them aren't that good.

  • @antant6217
    @antant6217 Жыл бұрын

    I hate subclassing a lot. I'd much rather have a focused kit than feel like a halfassed hodgepodge of class skills. Your options feel awful in 3 because of poor overall balance and a lack of dual wielding that just makes most of the roster default to gladiator unless you want to drop your weapon entirely. In later games, most skills are so bad at half level that they aren't worth using so you still just focus on the generic damage up subclass (bushi, ronin, nightseeker). Even 4's frontloaded skill scaling didn't really fix this issue. EO5's titles are a much better class expansion gimmick that actually helps classes keep their identity, as opposed to 3's "everyone is a gladiator because 90% of your options are garbage" subclassing. I don't mind grimoires at all in EOU. The entire fun part about grimoires in Untold is their relative uncommonness combined with how powerful they were. It was surprisingly easy to get monster grimoires (which were really strong) if you knew what you were doing, but I still find class-mixing stupid. 2U's grimoires are mostly screwed over by the removal of dual wielding, as most classes have no reason to use a different weapon without Limitless or something, so you mostly just defaulted to maxing your main skills, getting support skills if you need them, and maybe Double Action. There are roughly 6 or so good monster grimoires in the entire game, which means almost every single monster skill you get is completely worthless, It's hard to want to experiment when you're almost always at a severe damage loss due to force boosts's mostly requiring a specific weapon to operate and level 10 skills generally losing out to your main class's level 20 skills.

    Remember that in the original DS there's no difficulty mode to choose, and then when we think about how our party feel incomplete without "X" in the roster, which is the intentional design choice of the game according to one of the developer interviews, subclass is then a good difficulty adjustment tool by letting the players make their party more rounded and more versatile... if they choose to do so... You're perfectly capable of finishing the game without subclass, the game is just harder when you did so. Hence why I said we can view it as a difficulty adjustment tool, in which it did a good job at, IMO... Well, mostly, the exception has to be made with the Abyssal God... There's a video on KZread, of a player finishing off the Abyssal God using only original classes with no subclass, no stat books, no exploits. But they've to grind to level 99 to do that... and they admitted that they're lucky too that the boss didn't just switch to defense mode very often once the randomize AI kicks in.

    @@machaiping I dislike subclassing kind of on principle. I think classes losing their identity by sharing movesets is just inherently dumb and I'd rather have classes have more options (EO5's titles) than having subclassing in a game. EO3 also has a particularly underpowered roster and skill balance is still pretty shit so classes don't have much room to experiment. Considering most people just use the charges or give supports debuffs, the only thing a subclass run will do for me is just make the game take longer. EO3's roster doesn't have good enough skill variety to play with, and subclass is so stupidly designed that most options don't even work unless you want to drop your kit entirely just to be a clone of another class, which is a major reason why people default to gladiator or zodiac subclass. Whenever I get to subclassing I groan because no matter how hard I try I an never come up with a remotely fun idea for my dpses because the game has annoying limitations.

    @@antant6217 Fair enough. Yeah, when you mention it; the game is just so muscular Gladiator Meta that anything else is just gimping yourself or too reliant on gimmick, like bondage on the enemy, one party Ninja to abuse clone + Tangen batto, where you're screwed if the enemy decided to make a single out-of-pattern move or bondage failed to land. Meanwhile Gladiator simply Berserker Vow + Charge + "Insert your favorite physical nuke here" while having your Hoplite Bodyguard said Gladiator, and repeat until the enemy dies, which is very reliable and no gimmick, but boring.

    I'm not the biggest fan of this game but I do respect it more than I used to. I still think the skill balance is pathetic and random encounters are really easy and unengaging, but I appreciate the exploration and attempt at a compelling narrative. I wish the remasters had more balance fixes or made random encounters less of a snoozefest so I could experiment with classes more and feel challenged throughout. DS era consistently has the most engrossing exploration, and outside of a few floors I think 's exploration is pretty good. 3's no longer my least-favorite EO (that goes to 4) but I feel like the bad balance really hurts the game. DS era in general has poor random encounters and poor balance and it's a shame that the remasters are faithful to a fault. I don't know why they decided to buff skills like Provoke and bind skills in 1 and 2 but left worthless and redundant skills untouched. I don't know why they basically massively buffed the charge skills in 3 and basically nothing else. The changes to balance really opened up some options. Beast is way easier to use now, binds are unambiguously great in 1 and finally decent in 2 (unless you abuse Dominate), and Provoke tanks are now really good. 3's changes to charge skills massively buffed skills like Snipe and Sharpshooter and even let Yggdroid charge its Reflector skill (not super useful most of the time though). It sucks that they made some small but surprisingly significant balance changes but didn't feel like going all the way.

    I feel like you were a bit too positive of the game. Eo3 is a great game. But there are definitely a Lot of flaws. Even though this game is the least amount of screwing up you can do(because of subclassing any party works). But this game really makes you work for it. If you play this game for the first time, you are gaurenteed to get something wrong. Especially at the start. The solution? Grind for rests and new party compositions. This is what i absolutely hate about this game. The games mechanics really took a step up complexity wise, yet still it tries to confuse you so so much. 3 turn buffs. Nope, they are actually 4 turn buffs(i guess less costly rests help, 2 instead of 5). I should not need to do it more than 3 times though) . This game also has a massive issue for new players in which it tells you absolutely nothing. You can make your own strategy for your own boss, this is where the game actually shines in combat… just ignore the insanly overpowered stuff and cheese strategies. If you pick farmer or princess, you will basically have to retire them because they suck really really bad(princess stat spread is really bad. Its Ok early game, then immidietly is terrible after sub classing exists. Farmer just sucks and the only thing it does is camp mastery really.) and then there is the yggdroid and shogun. One of them is good one of them is terrible apart from really specific strategies and you can’t even use it due to no subclassing, so there is littarly no point at all to use it exept for gimmicky teams on a normal playthrough unless you want to grind… why would the game make you do that… Also also, you will hate this game if you never look anything up or switch to easy mode(which why would you not play the original difficulty.). The only way you can like this game past a certian point is if you look stuff up A LOT, or you can just, spam rest and grind, and y’know… thats fun enoguh. This game can’t beat eo2 in characters and music in my opinion, Maybe its close though. It has a lot of really good moments that connect to each other. Story itself is good. Other than getting both sides together, the ninja and zodiac are also a bit odd in here… personally though, the greatest crime is the stupid invisible wall in the 5th stratum. I can’t belive you did this to me, MIMES(jk, jk.)
