@@bugfisch7012 The Gustav fired 300 shells on Sevastopol, probably obliterated each target with just that one shell. I'd say 300 shells is a pretty damn good amount for such a stupidly gargantuan gun that required 500 troops to operate it.

The power of the big guns, especially the 6" Howitzer is mind blowing. Awesome slo-mo so you see how ferocious those rounds are. Incredible. Can't imagine being in combat with a bunch of those coming at you. Wow

I'm sure in 20 years they're going to have stuff that's a lot more destructive but yet a lot safer than a nuclear bomb, if that makes any sense.

The 25mm 37SA Puteaux gun did not have all that much trouble penetrating German armor at combat ranges in 1940 (which is why the Germans uparmored their panzers before invading the Soviet Union the following summer). When evaluating historical weapons, context is everything. As an historian, it is a treat to see such a rare weapon still functioning, as it provides insights into the weapon's actual performance characteristics, ergonomics, etc. Keep 'em coming! :)

Well the 75mm gun the Sherman could take on the German tanks but they had to close the distance vs the 88mm in which they could destroy anything the allies could throw at it at a very good range.

If I remember correctly, the melons barely moved initially when being hit, I assume they have a lot of inherita due to their mass and can displace the shell easier than thin metal, which is easily pierced and bent out of the way. Then the impact angle will make a significant difference, too. A flat surface will be penetrated, however if the shell does not hit the center of the melon with its tip, it will naturally be pushed upward by the resistance of the collision. Just some amateur estimations here, no deep physics stuff.

@@dayofmone While that is right, also watermelons are over 60% water and as you know it water is not compressible. So a bullet loses a lot more energy on a watermelon than a sheet metal that bends out of it's way. Like when you do a belly flop into a pool. Also, watermelons are naturally round and hence they roll with the shot, absorbing even more energy. If you ever seen boxing on TV or live, you probably saw them do this when they can't evade or block.

Apparently those sherman cannons, both the 75mm, and the 76.2 cannon had a problem with the rounds some times tumbling. Im pretty sure there is a 105 howitzer variant but im not 100%

The "big birtha" on the railway cars was unbelievable. It actually had a custom track made for it because it was as wide as like six train tracks. Those guns were not used much because they were too hard to move and assemble and too difficult to hide. It took a crew of 120 wehrmacht soldiers to assemble and operate that gun But when fired it could send a projectile 35 miles. And The ammunition that was shot out of it was so heavy that after a few times of being fired they had to increase the size of the artillery because it wore the barrel on every useAnd it was so expensive and time consuming to replace the barrel they would just increase the diameter of the artillery

@@walasiewicz Actually every shell was numbered and fired in sequence as the barrel bands on each differed and every tenth or so the shell itself got larger as you said. Barrel life was very short, can't recall but tens not 100s.
