Ойын-сауық
Sadly Season 4 must come to an end, but we’re going out with a BANG as we welcome NOFX legend Eric Melvin to the show!
Eric and Johnny connect over the responsibilities of fatherhood. Eric details the sometimes awkward situations he faces being a rockstar dad in the neighborhood. We dig into Eric’s side projects including his latest release, the EDM-infused punk project titled Melvinator.
Johnny asks the question that’s on everyone’s mind - what does the future hold for NOFX? Eric opens up about the reasons behind the band’s final tour, and what musical releases are planned to come in the next year. Eric also reveals his take on the controversial Vegas situation and how it may have played into the band’s farewell from touring.
We also learn on this episode:
•What NOFX song inspired Melvinator
•Extradimensional theory with Tom DeLonge
•Melvin’s warm up techniques before shows
•How Eric became a life coach

When was the first time you saw NOFX live?

2018 with Bad Religion! My younger brothers first show ever too. I was very Punk in Drublic that day, by the end of the night, I was stumbling around and they cut me off... but I had a blast, really shocked my ex g/f, didn't hate me for being M.I.A, like the entire either on line for a beer, or on line too pee. To the memories I remember, and the to the ones I can't.

Ive been a long time fan but shamefully, I STILL havent seen them live. A hear or so ago Mike came on stage with my band and helped sing one of our songs which was a super fun moment. Not the same as watching the full band doing their thing on stage and enjoying all the NOFX classics tho!!!

he’s my favorite NOFX member.
Eric Melvin you are such a god damn inspiration. As a part of NOFX you’ve stayed true to yourselves as artists all these years. As a human being you’ve stayed humble and mindful of the things that are truly important in life. Thank you for being a beacon of human potential, warts and all.
I started listening to NOFX when I was 16....I'm 44 and have 3 children. Hearing Eric talk about real life being a father and you guys chatting about Audiobooks and your children and everyday life is refreshing I could sit and listen to that kind of stuff all day long.
While it is still sad that they aren't going to be touring anymore, it made my day when I heard Melvin say that they are going to continue to record albums. What a relief. Recording and writing-wise, they are at their peak. The last two albums have been absolutely phenomenal. Two of the greatest punk rock albums ever written, imo. Both the writing and performance is absolutely mind blowing. The two bands that I never want to see stop recording new stuff are Nofx and Lagwagon.

I totally second the never ending life of NoFX as a studio band. Weird to say, but I bet those forthcoming compositions will be on another level (music wise)

I love this man, he's such a great person
I only saw a short NOFX set at Warped Tour 2000 so I have to see the final tour. Legends.

I saw them once at 09 warped, became a fan, saw them again with a buddy and we got so drunk I lost him and found him after missing a shoe. Saw them this past summer and it was as funny as the time in 09, if you can make one do it.
I remember meeting Melvin at Portland stop of the first ditch effort tour, he was clearly dealing with shit from home and still took a pic with me and my buddy, great dude, great band, I need to see this last tour
He is a zombie look alike on stage with the best guitar technique, down strokes, pic slide, everything so perfect for a punk show. Absolute best show in Québec last summer.

Nofx and Melvin are great. They have been one of my favorite bands since I got my first cassette of one of their albums (Longest Line EP when it first came out). But your statement is a bit of an exaggeration. hehe. If you think he is the best player or has the best technique in the genre, you must not be a musician.

Ribbed live. New boobs Melvin killed it. Hefe struggled.
Enjoyed all of this. Melvin rocks and it's great to hear a down to earth conversation with him. 🤘
Dude, Eric Melvin is such a nice dude!
I really enjoy seeing Eric talk about this stage in life. Walking kids to school, thinking about what might be the best experience for them, at drop-off parents acting like they cant see each other. It is both funny and therapeutic to hear we share these thoughts and experiences. To see that a notable person like Eric would feel like people see him and pretend they don't. In small communities and internet information those situations are awkward for everyone... Knowing about someone before you really know them.
Hearing that Melvin loves the lord of the rings books just makes my day!!
I’m 37 years old been a fan of nofx since I was 9 years old punk in drublic was the first album I ever purchased on my own in 1994 Eric Melvin has been one of my hero’s for many years I can’t wait to hear the solo stuff sad to see one of my favorite bands breaking up but I’m grateful for the memories 🤘 awesome episode thank you JC
what a wonderful human being, thank for this interview, Johnny, youre ok too ;)
Met Melvin back in 2012 when they played in New Orleans and he actually chilled after the show to talk to me and my friend about music since we were in a band and open up to us about his life, such a good dude
This is gold Johnny, love you both.
I love Eric Melvin! This is so cool to hear a longer interview with him. I plan on buying the Nofx book, too. 👍🏾
Thanks for this interview. I love that we get to hear from Melvin for once. I totally understand the reason for bringing up the Dimebag shooting, but there was way to that than you guys mentioned. It was primarily because the shooter was dealing with some serious mental health issues, and for some reason he thought that Pantera had stolen lyrics and songs from him. I've only seen NoFx twice even though I've been a fan since 94 or so. I will definitely try to go to see them on this tour. Keep up the good work Johnny!

100% agree. I mean I have heard Eric take care of vocal screams, rare to hear talk at length at least online
Melvin is such a sweet man ❤
Melvins portion of the NOFX book was pretty rough. Between him and smelly, they made the book
@michaelr.4878
Жыл бұрын
Totally. Their parts were definitely the most thorough, deep/emotional and heartfelt. Not only were their stories more 'book friendly,' but it seems like they went into much greater detail with the guy who wrote the book for them..which he wrote from interviews that he conducted with them. The book was great. I read it and then listened to them read the audiobook. .Both were a cool experience.

@@Imwastingspace Just like Mike, they’re rude, pissy, and standoffish toward fans. Then someone “cool” like Dave Grohl comes around the corner and their personality completely changes. Melvin and Smelly interact with fans same way they’d interact with Dave Grohl
I saw NOFX at the Hard Rock in Atlantic City and, completely unexpectedly, it was something like the 2nd or 3rd time they ever played The Decline live. I absolutely lost my mind. One of those “I can’t believe this is happening/I’m going to be able to die happy” type of moments. Later in the night, I’m wasted walking down some random back hallway of some casino with my friend, and some dude is walking towards us. I’m not paying attention when my friend says to the guy “hey, I know you”… I’m so drunk that I don’t realize that it’s Eric Melvin until he’s like 100 feet past us. I yelled down the hallway something like “you guys are fucking awesome!!”… To me, in my mind, these guys were like rock star level celebrities and I was never the type to fanboy out on people, so I felt guilty drawing attention to this dude who was probably trying to put his fame aside and go have a normal night in AC. It didn’t occur to me that he probably wasn’t as famous as I was imaging in my head. Either way, I don’t remember his response, but just that he was totally cool about the whole thing, and I appreciated it. I had listened to every one of their albums hundreds, if not thousands of times, so to me they were just larger than life.
Smart phones are part of nofx problems like in vegas, I’ve seen NOFX live since the 90’s, and they said way more harsher shit back then but we love it and laugh about it after the show… i miss those years so much
went down an awesome rabbit hole with Melvin talking about Brian Baker and found...Beach Rats! One of his side projects - HOLY SHIT THIS IS PUNK GOLD!!
I actually enjoyed the normal family life stuff at the beginning of the show. It good to hear the real life stuff and not just all of the partying and touring stuff. He’s a normal person like the rest of us. Allows us to connect with him more. Liked the podcast keep up the great work.
What great people in that band……I really love them
great podcast. as much nofx and punk as possible plz!! subscribed. loved linewlium by the way!
Melvin is greatness 🙌
I could listen to Melvin read menus his voice is so soothing for some reason. Voiceovers with Melvin.
Omg the Melvinator solo stuff mentioned is so fucking good!!!
Like the Rolling Stones, I'm sure NOFX isn't going away.

Nooooo.
Eric Melvin is my favorite guitar player.
1998 in Buffalo NY with The Dickies and Hi-Standard.
The world has become something so fucking woke that NOFX is vital to call out the bullshit. I was truly outraged about the year of wokeness imposed on NOFX. How very unpunk rock. I am cherishing the fact I did score tickets for the SF final tour shows, yet bummed still. Nofx had played a serious part of the soundtrack of my life. NOfX has always had the ability to let me scream at top of my lungs along with their music. Shared in my best and worst of times. I feel I understand the bands position through Melvins explanation about the decision, since Mike statements thus far leaves out much of the why, understandably based on Eric’s cautioned statement. I am relieved that Eric said that this decision doesn’t exclude the possibility of new NOFX in the future. Unlike other artists who have done fairwells, when Mike says it I take it more seriously than other rockers. Thanks Johnny for having Melvin on to clear the air on so many topics, where he doesn’t put him self out there at volume as Mike wields. Love NOFX. Fan forever 🎉
I think the whole blink 182 and nofx beef rumor might come from an interview Mike gave, forgot with who about ‘Punk Rock Cliche’ was written originally by Mike and one of the blink guys, sorry blink isn’t one of my favorite bands personally so his name escapes me. It was recorded by Blink and was mentioned by them in an interview by Travis barker talking up the track pre album release. This is how Mike told it in the interview I watched. And he says Blink supposedly dropped the track when they found out he helped write it. That’s at least what I gleaned from the video interview I saw
Melvin is so wholesome.
I never saw them only watched YT video of them.
Melvin rules 🤘🏻
I;m one of the few proplle to actually see them live in Scotland. I remember mike walking onto the stage and cracking open a bottle of whisky before they played. Last time I saw them was in Newcastle. Hppe I can see them again, without having to travel to Enderlund. PLAY GLASGOW ONE LAST TIME NOFX. Grow a pair... I'm sure those idiots have better things to do with their time, and you can afford the extra saecurity... Fucken cryin yous are done... Soundtrack to my life, and my inspiration to play guitar and bass. Still listening evey day until I die.
Somebody needs to tell Bret Hart he could totally pull off dreadlocks.

Good thing is, that we finally were able to listen to Eric fu**cking up all the lyrix for once in stead of mike, like allways! verry verry awesome!!!! wiuuuhhh Thank You All four for comming one last time to Linz. sooory that there was no apfelstrudl....hehehe

Lmao at the self awareness they had for a second. Remember everyone, the purpose of life is to have kids so that they can have kids, and everyone gets a free meaning of life, it's very important.
those beef videos had something to do with travis barker and fat mike. its been a bit since i watched it so i forgot what had happened

hahaha never thought i would ever hear fat mike can sing come out of someones mouth. He got A LOT better but never really a objectively good singer. I duuno, things that are out of key are like fingernails on a chalk board to me. Especially out of tune guitars. I like melvins vocals a lot
Fatmike has been going thru a couple of strange wild personality changes till now. Crossdressing, piss drinking, bdsm and whatever else u name it. Hes becomming a weird form of the princess on the pea paralax cloud of madness. You just dont end the best thing that happend to your life. which fed you, made you rich. created a mega fanbase and became your family Mike! You can still do all the weird stuff and more but dont kill your baby
Loved this convo until tom delonge’s alien fantasies came into play
I feel like Melvin could've easily said he was drunk and it was made up on the spot and moved along. to back peddle and be like we say offensive stuff on purpose is just stupid. I'm glad they're stopping touring because it always gives them an excuse to break sobriety. they're old enough to know better now. they have kids to be alive for. it was a bummer watching descendents open for them and absolutely slay, and then nofx come out and be drunk.
This host is a chump.
