Most loyal Pens fans know that missing the playoffs is for the better. It's giving the ownership a wake up call and they're likely gonna fire Ron Hextall. Hopefully this happens and they do some tweaking to the team before next season.

I'm thankful for the opportunity to reset too, but it just really stings seeing that streak end and it's deflating. Pens have been in the playoffs since I was six.

Even though I’m so sad about us missing playoffs, maybe management will finally realize that Hextall screwed this team up and we’ll get a better gm, let’s hope for good changes to come

It will take at least 3 seasons to begin repairs. By that time the team will be losing money and move to Kansas City.

Thanks for acknowledging what we have achieved over such a long period of time. Not only the cups but seeing unbelievable skill and toughness. Imagine being a Canadiens or Toronto hockey fan. I shudder.

100% on Hextall. Terrible asset management. Marino and Matheson for Petry who's on the brink of retirement and probably already should.

Last Time the Pittsburgh Penguins of "NHL" are not in the Playoffs-2006. Last Time the Sacramento Kings of "NBA" are in the Playoffs-2006.

Feels strange but it's a new era and new generation making waves in the league. It's good for the sport overall that we get "new" teams in the playoffs.

Not necesserily. The Blackhawks are getting Bedard after recent 3 Stanley Cups and their core leaving the team.

That stat about the bottom 6 is the biggest thing that a lot of people are not realizing.

You love to see it. Maybe they’ll finally actually rebuild instead of waste years for a first round loss

Yeah. And We traded a pretty good offensive defenseman in Matheson for a decent but not as good offensive D-man in Petry. But Petry is 6 years older than Matheson. And why the fuck did we also trade John Marino for what?...maybe 6 games of Ty Smith?? It was just deals made for the sake of making deals. Nothing actually good. Thanks Hextall...The Carter contract is stupid too and outside the faceoff dot he has woefully underperformed. And, although I LOVE the guy for his earlier time here, that Bonino trade was fucking dumb as well. And I bet his (Hextall) stupid ass actually pays Jarry the 6M/year that he supposedly wants this offseason too. BL, Fuck hextall.

He did a couple of tv commercials for Tim Hortons 🍁 A couple of years back along with another team mate Sid. Surprised 😲 customers as they pulled up to the drive though to place their orders he was wearing the Tim Hortons uniform with the headset.

It wasn't a complete waste. I want to thank Ron Hextall for trading Mike Matheson and a draft pick to Montreal, in exchange for Jeff Petry and Ryan Poehling. Thanks to Ron Hextall's work, the future looks bright in Montreal!

I was 15 the last time they missed the playoffs 😭😭... Hextall has got to go, what a lame tenure he's had

Core is too old to build around and even though they played a full 82 all 3 are injury prone. My guess is the new corporate owners will blow it up and it will be time for a rebuild. Father Time is undefeated. Just like Marleau and company in San Jose, Getzlaf and company in Anaheim, and more recently, Kane and Toews in Chicago, all good things come to an end. Pens fans should count their blessings, 3 cups in 16 years and every year the Pens made the playoffs, fans and players alike knew they had a chance at a run. Thanks for the memories.

All good things eventually end. Enjoy Crosby, Malkin and Letang final 3 or 4 years cuz it may be a while before you get to have such players on your team again. It has been almost 40 years since anyone on my favorite team scored 100 points and only once in the last 25 years did any players get more then 75 points...

Of all the years to miss the playoff though... Pens could move to 4th in the draft. This is a strong draft anyway and the 14th pick will be a good one. In 2016, the Islanders used the Pens' pick to select Matthew Barzal. That was another great draft year. Perhaps, Pittsburgh can select a great piece (and not trade them away too early like they did with Filip Gustavsson).

Most of the blame goes to the coach for playing the same system all year and having an embarrassing PP. Nothing change on the ice and did not play a 60 minute game once this season. The system the coach has them play is a way that they can’t play anymore because the are older and slower. They couldn’t hold a lead at all because all the coach wanted was offense and little defense

No worries... we have already made the team better! Addition by subtraction the team has relieved Burke, Hextall, and Pryor as of a couple hrs ago. Interested to see who they get to fill these positions. I hope they fill them prior to the draft, but need to be patient and find the right fit.

Interesting when you consider that the last man to Captain a Penguins non-playoff team was Mario Lemieux. And honestly, A 58 year old Mario would have probably been our best bottom 6 point producer had he played with us this year.

Need to trade all 3 for as much draft capitol as possible. Rebuild and do it decisively. It'll take 5 years unless they slow play it, then count on 7,8 or more.

There are a couple of kids that are pretty good like O'Connor and PO, but everyone else besides Crosby, Tanger, Malkin and Gentz is subpar. If the group had more faith in DeSmith he would have been ranking up minutes in goal and ultimately becoming better because lets face it he is THE better goalie of the two. He was never given decent enough chance to prove himself.

Been following the Pens since '88 ;) ...So been through some amazing and harrowing times. Almost were the Portland Penguins for a minute, a couple decades ago lol....

4 finals for the core.

On the bright side, if the pens made playoffs, hextall probably wouldn’t even be considered to be fired. Hoping they do since he killed this team. The only move he made to improve this team was acquiring rakell last year. Every other trade/signing aged terribly. But the main concern last offseason was debating to keep the core or not. The did and they produced. Did nothing to help them while giving up assets in the process

Just look at Bergeron, Kreijci and Marchand in Boston as an example of what this team could have been

I think Crosby has it in him to win one more cup. But things will have to change first.

This era is over. You don't build a team around 36 and 37 year old players. They are practically always relegated to 'veteran leadership' roles. They had decent seasons this year, sure. However, the drop off is going to be sharp from here on out. Like Washington, it's time for a scorched earth rebuild in Pittsburgh.

I was pretty leery about that Hextall signing from day one. Rick Tocchet aside, it's probably best to just steer clear of any of those Flyer guys. Been what? 48 years without a Cup...2nd longest drought in the league (amongst former Cup winners)...you tell me. If they have significant Flyers stank on them, no thanks, I'll pass.

It’s easy to say that based on circumstances but you genuinely just never know. LA kings were the 8th seed and won the cup that year lol

Boy is cry baby ever going going to cry this year.

Malkin’s point per game season is great and all but the untimely penalties negate most of his goals, that’s not how a super star is supposed to act. I blame him for a lot of the losses this season. Either way, it’s over.

Move the Pens to Hartford, and the Pirates to Montreal! Yinzertown loves the Steelers only! LOL Seriously, yinz had a good run, its rebuild time. All teams go through it, and Pittsburgh has joined that club. Any chance Fleury comes back to back up Jarry?

I hope Pens keep Sullivan. He's an elite coach who had to use the scraps hextall gave him. Lucky to have him.

Malkins fantastic play is exactly why they should have moved him. They could have gotten a first and possibly a prospect for him. The depth is terrible because they’ve got few to none in terms of prospects and picks. Those 3 players are all hall of famers, but Malkin and Letang would have been worth far more as collateral in a trade than they were as players for Pittsburgh. But, I understand Wanting to keep your best players. They are heroes in Pittsburgh and it would break too many hearts to see them go. But the best choice isn’t always the easiest one.
