So this is something that only people who read FSN would understand fully, but the grail itself is a monkeys paw that can only interperet desires via actualizing destruction. Meaning for example if you wanted to be rich, the grail would simply destroy the entire world so you had the most money in comparison to all the dead humans. In the same way, the grail interpretated kiritsugus way of living into it's methodology Ie he always killed as the answer to his problems. So the grail would simply kill everyone and everything else in the entire world besides kiritsugu and his family. And that would be "peace". That is why kiritsugu rejected the grail and his family. The cost of simply seeing his family again was too high a price for what the grail wanted to do. So he had to kill that wish of his personally

Yeah, Luke pretty much explains it in the end. The Corrupt Grail only works through how you would actualize achieving that dream. The Angry Mango inside wishes to be unleashed upon the world so it needs human desire to activate the grail. To prevent an even greater destruction or evil being born, Kiritsugu chose the only logical solution. The reason why Kiri called Kirei an idiot is because he saw all of what was happening to Kiritsugu but Kirei still wanted the grail to show himself what he already knows (as he learned from Gilgamesh what his true nature was)

What Emiya Kiritsugu chose is exactly the opposite that Eren chose, that is why he is the "Hero of Justice" and Eren is the "Demon"

That YAMEROOOOO will resound in my memory for my whole life. 10... No, 11... No, 1000/10 voice acting Ayako Kawasumi is a Goddess amongst we mere mortals.

If Kiritsugu can see a different solution he doesnt even consider it. As you see from his backstory he always chooses the extreme option to assure the most people saved. And thats why the grail’s solution is basically a reflection of his life philosophy.

This Holy Grail was not the same as the Sacred Chalice of Christianity, the grail on this war were made by the three great mage family to fulfilled their own desire. It less "holly" than the real thing, and has more "magical" quality to it.

Yesh, its called a Lesser Grail for a reason, its even numbered. Though that is explained in the FSN.

Minor Spoilers: The Grail is not actually the Holy Grail from the Bible, but took that name due to what it can do and when the Church got involved. "The Grail" is just an accomulation of mana (collected by the ritual and the servants), and the original objetive was to use such huge amounts of mana to reach what mages call " the root", basically the origin of all (and the Church thinks this is God basically). The thing is, on the 3rd war, the last one before this, a servant called Angra Manyu (they mentioned the name in the episode) was summoned, and to put it simple he is basically the devil. By dying, he corrupted the grail (it collects the servants as they die), so from that point on the grail became useless, just a thing that curses the world as a way to grant wishes. No one knew about the corruption until this episode basically, so what Kiritsugu is doing is crazy on everyone's eyes. As said by "Fake wife", Angra Manyu just wants to be born into the world, and "grants a whish" as a way to be born, since he is part of the grail. Usually the order to see the Fate series is by release date, and there's a Fate anime before this one, but very few like it (the 2006 anime), that's why people say to start at Fate Zero, the prequel to all others.

Angra is not basically the devil. Fate's version of Angra Mainyu is probably the more modern version of the Zoroastrian figure, who is a representation of humanity's evil tendencies. Though the original version is more akin to the devil, they aren't really the same.

It met 1 Emiya and an adopted Emiya. Its not much but its weird that it happened twice (about 4 more times after Zero because of Timey-Wimey f^ckery), and consecutively.

The spirit corrupting the grail is a master gaslighter. it tries to make kiritsugu think that the only way it can grant wishes.

back grounds: 1) kiritsugu suffer from damage of self acceleration, but saber’s Avalon helps him to push forward 2) this is the forth holy grail war, by the third war, one of the master summoned Aŋra Mainiiu(aka “all sins of the world”) and thought this will help him win the war, however Aŋra Mainiiu was completely not good at fight and lose, but his ability polluted the holy grail and turn it into nothing but curse. The black mud rushed out from the grail was curse and killed almost all people there 3) after the second war, holy grail became twisted and will only for fill the winner’s wish by the worst way, for example, if you wish to become the most rich people in the world, the grail will kill everyone but you, then you will become the richest 4) Kirei’s heart was actually damaged by that shot

Kirtsugu is my favorite character in all of fiction

22:50 of course you won't be able to do it, Kiritsugu has been killing people for years, you're a family man and hopefully haven't killed anyone. He embodies an extreme, no one should ever wish to be like him.

The Holy Grail didn't look 'Holy' because it's not the real Holy grail. It's a mage-made imitation based on the Holy Grail from the Bible. It will be kinda long to explain what the grail really is, and the Anime didn't really touch the subject, as it something that you must delve deeper on the source material to fully understand. To sum it up, the Grail is not an 'omnipotent Wish-granting device' that most character in the series thought it were. Holy Grail is just a giant pool of Mana/magic energy, with something sentient inside it (Angra Mainyu). Kiritsugu thought that if he got the Grail, he could make a world where conflict and strife didn't exist, 'MAGICALLY', as he thought the Grail is Omnipotent. But that's just not how it is. The Grail grant the wielder wish's by using that massive pool of Mana to do the thing that the wielder normally can't. Kiritsugu only know the concept of 'Sacrifice the few for the sake of the many' or 'Necessary sacrifice for greater good' to realize his ideal, that's why the grail will grant the wish using that same method but on bigger scale. And if you add that there's an evil entity called 'Angra Mainyu' inside it, you bet the grail will choose the most 'Violent' way possible to grant those wishes.

Like people have already said, the Holy Grail grants wishes like a monkey's paw, it was corrupted during the 3rd Grail War when the Einsberns tampered with the ritual and summoned Angra Mayu, the origin of all evils according to Zoroastrianism, the hero was weak as hell. Because of that summoning the Grail summoned anti-heroes and less ritious heroes. The grail was forever tainted. Also, the Emiya scenes highlights his ideology, he wants to save people but his is a clear cut method, kill or destroy to save the most people, he would kill 49 people to save 51.

Even if the Grail, would not have been corrupted, when the wish can only be achived by a solution you can comprehend and that yourself theoretically could achive on your own, if given the power and time to do it, it still would be hellish tricky, to find a solution for whatever your wish is. Something simple like learning a skill or language would be easy, cause you can comprehend getting the learning material and the learning process. Getting rich as an example is way more tricky, you can't just comprehend the whole process of winning in the lottery, else you could just do it without the Grail. Working to get rich? Most likely unlikely, if you don't got a really well paying job already, you need to fully comprehend, how you would get one, including getting the degree/skills for it, how to impress your future boss to employ you, how to finance the degree etc. The concept of how would you achive your wish, if you had to do it without a miracle device, is a nice concept that I like to use in D&D for the Wish spell. Way more fun, than just come up with something that goes wrong and it gives the player the chance to achive everything without a downside if they find a solution for their wish.

Best way for world piece via miracle is to separate hostile parties into different dimensions that separate each party until they reform themselves but that would take automated multidimensional space-time manipulation. Holy Grail might be able to that given how Fates earth has multiple dimensions such as Avalon where I the great Merlin reside 😆 so Holy Grail mightve been forced to obey the wish if Kiritsugu wasn't Kiritsugu but some overpowered wielder of True Magic or servant such as King Salomon or perhaps Jesus

The Holy Grail now works like a monkeys paw, it got corrupted when Einsberns tampered and summon Angra Mayu in 3rd war thereby corrupting the grail. Avalon is not exactly another dimension like you think it is, its like the EM spectrum, you think infarred and ultraviolet radiation as exotic because you cant perceive it but its always there. Alavlon resides on the Reverse Side of the world, away from the constant decay and destruction of ours. Its where intelligent phantasmal beasts left to when humanity got stronger. Its where the, hard to describe, the essence of the earth truly resides, still retains the world and its laws as it was from the Age of Gods, and you can say its like the reality marble of the earth. Anyway, normal humans cant survive in Avalon, mana is too dense and it will kill them in one breath.

Kiritsugu actually has a very solid reason to destroy the grail you will understand it later

To Kiritsugu, why he did all that in the illusion is because the grail showed him what would happen if he obtained it. In the end, him getting the grail meant he'd be killing everyone including his wife and daughter. Because he refuses to do that, he rejected the grail. Now when it came to your questions with the boats. There was no time to teach everyone how to do it for one. And even if he taught by showing them as he did it, it's still not an easy thing to do hence why part of the hypothetical was that only he had the skills to do it. There was no time to ensure everyone survived and it's possible that they might make it worse. This is why it's the trolley dilemma. One way or another someone will likely die. Ultimately the grail will interpret his wish by his tried and true methods as it only grants the wish as the wishers understands. To save the world, kiritsugu would kill the few to save the many, but unfortunately eventually you're gonna run out of people with that mentality so the grail would commit global genocide as its just streamlining the process. Don't have to worry about saving people if they all dead

A bit correction. Kiritsugu killing 'everyone' including his wife and daughter is not what would happen. Killing Illya and Irisviel inside that illusion is Kiritsugu's own choice to 'Reject' the Grail's offer. Accepting the Grail will make Kiritsugu able to realize 'Peace' by culling the 'few' in favor of the 'many' everytime there's a conflict. It won't just kill everyone right away, but if it keep doing that on every conflict, eventually there won't be anyone left before that peace is realized. The Grail show that despite all that, Kiritsugu can still be with his wife and daughter in the end as ultimately they will be sparred, but Kiritsugu rejected it and killed them in that illusion.

The "boat problem" is asinine if you think about it. With any thought exercise, there is a suspension of disbelief that the presenter is providing all the relevant information and all decision options. Well the way bad trolley problems work is the presenter violates that suspension of disbelief and acts like it's clever. They provide an X vs Y decision, waits for the quizzed to answer "X", and then say, "oh but the 'real' decision was X vs Z".
