THIS is SCOTLAND!!! MUST SEE Spots in Kirkwall, Orkney Islands

Our last day in Scotland on our British Isles cruise on Norwegian Dawn takes us to the Orkney Islands off the Northern coast and the city of Kirkwall. We booked this cruise ‘last minute’ and all of the excursions in the port were full so we are exploring the town.
We start our on-our-own walking tour at St. Magnus Cathedral which was founded in the 12th century. It is a beautiful church with a surrounding kirkyard. Most of the grave stones cannot be read as they are so old. We can only make out the ones from the 1800-1900’s and there are not many of those.
Next to the cathedral are two castle ruins: Bishop’s Palace (12th century) and Earl’s Palace (17th century). Both are beautiful and I wish we would have been there in season so we could see inside.
It was a short, but great day in Scotland! Back on the ship, it’s time to hit the spa!

My daughter lived in England for quite a few years. One day we were on the phone and all of a sudden she said I have to go and hung up! About three minutes later she called me and said, sorry mom I haven’t seen the sun in two weeks and it just came out so I had to run outside 😂😂😂 I completely understand your pain!

The positivity… The “making the most out of any situation” is what keeps me coming back to your channel. Great video. Loving the Euro-series. 😊

Great to see a video where I'm not shouting "Buy a coat!" at the screen. Next time you go to Kirkwall make sure you go to the Orkney Museum in the middle of the town... you'd have loved it

I'm a rainy day girl so that grey hazy weather brings me so much joy. It also means no sun burns. I'm probably one of the few cruisers that hope it's raining in Port. Graveyards are amazing. You are having my definition of a glorious day.

The oldest headstones in Kirkwall are actually built into St Magnus cathedral's inner walls. I had a chance to see that and the tomb of St. Magnus when I was there. If you had the chance I would suggest an excursion to the Knap of Howar, the oldest dwelling in the UK. Dated to around 3700BC

Sorry that you didn’t get to see what would have been really interesting, but you should definitely check out the song “In a country church yard” by the Scottish singer Chris de Burgh. That describes almost exactly what you got to see… .

We did a ten day round trip by minivan last summer (with Rabbies tours) from Edinburgh to Orkney, Outer Hebredees and Inner Hebredees! Highly recommended! There are several sites on Orkney that are listed as a UNESCO world heritage site e.g. Skara Brae.

Old cemeteries are so cool I love them but did you know that these old gravestones can fall down. They can be dangerous if it falls on a child. It’s a thing I have heard. So scary. Scotland is beautiful even in the rain. Hoping you got some good weather on this trip.

It is really not unusual to see buildings from the 1600s in the UK. I grew up in a house in the UK built in the early 1800s, and worked in a pub built in the 1600s. Still had the gate out back they used to bring horses in. British people think 100 miles is a long way, Americans think 100 years is a long time!

Really enjoyed your vlogs I’m been following you since you did your Mexico vlogs a couple of years ago just a pity the weather wasn’t the best hopefully when you both come back it’ll be warm & sunny(but don’t bet on it) lol . I listened to the part when you talked about the name of a church in Scotland you will find only the Presbyterians would refer to a Church as a Kirk the rest of the Christian denominations in Scotland like Roman Catholic , Episcopal , Methodist etc would only refer to it as a church and a churchyard and never a Kirk or Kirkyard although the word Episcopalian derives from the word Kirk because of it’s history with the aristocracy in Scotland the word now used by them now is church probably because the word Kirk is seen as an old fashioned & outdated name 👍🏻

While I like your positivity, I am not seeing a compelling reason to select a cruise that includes Scotland compared to other European locations, or Caribbean, or pretty much anywhere else. ;) Also, you won't see haggis in the USA because it's illegal here.

Well, because they booked last minute, as they mentioned, they didn't have a chance for the tours. If you are particularly interested in ancient history or archaeology the Orkney's are amazing to tour. I was there so long ago now that the tour company I used, run by a married couple, is no longer in operation but I'm sure there are a handful of others.
