Your videos are always beautiful, informative, funny and enjoyable. The expedient to make the recorder more silent with the elastic I often exploit it especially with the tin whistle, and it works very well, the only drawback is that the tuning fork is lowered by several cents, even by 1/4 of a tone if you mute a lot.

Thanks, Sarah! This reminds me of that time in college when the bassoons had to play a low A, so we stuck paper towel tubes into our bells & clipped off a bit at a time to tune it to A.

I loved this. I also loved the previous vid where you used a piece of paper to block the labium and stop the sound. I use that trick all the time to spare my neighbours. I'll definitely try the rubber band trick now cause it's kinda not as fun to play without the sound, so a lowered volume would be definitely better than no volume! Thanks!

Hey Sarah! I hack that I use for cleaning my recorders is using white vinegar as a natural disenfectant and mold preventative. I just put enough inside to fill up the wind way with my finger closing the end of the mouthpiece. I leave the vinegar sitting there for a minute and then let it sit for a few minutes after that, and lastly I flush it with water and dry.

That's how wind players make double-stops, but there's a trick to it. The "double" one comes out like an overtone based upon the "clash" of the two tones, so you must learn to sing the particular tone that causes the particular overtone to come out & harmonize with the main tone. Good luck!

Here’s my hack. The wind way in my plastic alto gets a lot of condensation. To dry it out, I fold a cigarette paper lengthwise 2 or 3 times so it looks like a flat toothpick and stick it into the wind way to absorb the condensation. If I’m careful, I can push it all the way down to the labium and pull it out from there. It really helps!

I'm pretty sure, from the picture, that the toilet roll hack is so you can put the phone on a desk or table, watch a video hands free, and hear your music. Maybe if the hole is only just large enough to let the phone through it could hold it suspended in the air and allow the tube to vibrate? Kind of like the rubber piece of an ear bud that allows its speaker element to float and becomes part of the speaker system.

Here is a hack that makes it easier to play high F. Cut a piece of clear tape (not too thin) that is about 1 mm wide and 1 inch long, and place it horizontally over the thumb hole about 1 mm from the top of the hole. When placed correctly, it allows a perfect high F even if the thumb is not positioned exactly where it should be.

But is this a valid way to play? Or am I gonna clog something or blow improperly into the curved windway? Otherwise I struggle with the stretch.

Ehm, YOU know this trick, but does every viewer know this? When you practise a fast tempo you are not that good at, the trick is: practise playing it even a bit faster than required. When you are confident you can play it even faster than you will perform it, on stage, in the studio, at a festival, dressed as a fairy, well, then you KNOW you can play it. Summary, studying a high tempo, do not just do the required tempo, your confidence often boosts, when you are sure you can EASILY play it a bit faster as well.

Some good hacks in there, but being male and over 60 the potential for bra or tampon tricks is rather, erm, limited, to say the least! However, I have played a concert in winter, in a very cold church, with my sopranino awaiting its moment of glory -- inside my shirt.

I often put the headjoint into my waistband. Maybe an opinion for non-bra-persons 🤷😄

It might cause some odd looks if you do it with a basset recorder. 😂

2:51 We're all mature adults here. Although not a recorder hack, speaking of feminine hygiene products: for those who play the violin and/or viola, in lieu of a traditional shoulder rest, a cheap and effective substitute that could be used is a sanitary feminine maxi pad. How's that "for ingeniousness and creativity,” and as "a practical application"? 🤔 Not to mention thinking outside the box (no pun intended). 😉 And I don't even live in the Netherlands. 😌

wouldn't a pad be a very flat shoulder rest? are you supposed to stick it on?

@@harler5590 A shoulder rest is a matter of personal preference and comfort. Some violinists don't use a shoulder rest at all. But I digress. I, myself, use a 99-cent cellulose sponge scrubber as a shoulder rest. It’s connected by a three-pronged rubber band configuration, attached to the protruding points of the lower bouts located below the bridge, and to the end button located below the tailpiece of the violin forming a contiguous V shape. I then place the innovative shoulder rest under the rubber bands. The same method of attachment can be applied to the sanitary feminine maxi pad. If it's too flat, you can always use more than one pad.
