Hands down one of my favorite moments of the series. Queen Mary Tudor has often been depicted as being a virtual puppet of the Spanish Habsburg Empire without loyalty or consideration towards England and its subjects. Yet here she draws a line in the sand towards Spanish influence: She is a Catholic, yes, but an English Catholic and a Princess of England, and a Princess of England does not flee or sell out her claim to foreign interests.

Sin duda. Usualmente las reinas por derecho propio al casarse le entregaban todo el poder a sus maridos pero ella puso el pie en el suelo e impidió la adhesión de Inglaterra a los dominios Habsburgo y el arrebato de su poder y autoridad

The Habsburgs did not treat her or Catherine well and weren't very good relatives. I'm kind of mad she married Philip for a variety of reasons he wasn't a good choice for England. Mary probably thought she was doing the right thing for her country by renewing an alliance w/her mother's country but failed to see that Spain didn't have her best interests at heart.

@@heatherwaetzig2633 Very true. She probably felt compelled to attach herself to her mother's house. But at the same time that house had changed drastically. It was no longer the House of Trastamara ; nor of Castille and Aragon, but a Habsburg House. Under the heavy rule of Charles V. Meanwhile, Philip of Spain was quick to forget that their Great grand mother Isabel of Castille ruled in her own name, and clearly struggled with being a male consort.

There’s a Tudor telling off a stinkin ambassador. She has the steel of her mother, an infanta of Spain and youngest daughter of Queen Isabella, a warrior queen, in her own right as well as being her father’s daughter. She learned much at her mother’s side until Henry separated them, forever.

Which is what I was adressing in this guy's comment. black people in europe had plenty of power, especially if they were from southern spain, though they were indeed outnumbered by their white counterparts. The sort of racism that we're used to is actually a pretty modern thing mostly coming from well after the tudor period, and mostly starting in the Americas. European nobles cared more about who you were decended from and how long your family had been around than the color of your skin. Classism was the problem then, not so much racism.

I just have to rant about this for a second. After watching the Spanish series Carlos Rey Emperador and now this show my opinion of the Hapsburgs has taken a severe nose dive. I used to think Emperor Charles V helped Catherine of Aragon and Mary as best he could with Henry VIII and the divorce situation but now after doing more research it's pretty obvious he wasn't doing much to assist them at all. He abandoned Catherine to die in exile and the most he ever did for Mary was offer to help her escape England. Leaving permanently just to stay alive in Flanders I believe as the Ambassador offers here. Not cool. Poor Mary no wonder she felt so alone she was. Loved how she told off the Ambassador here.

Well, in Charles's defense, he had 10000 other problems in his own kingdoms, and also with closer relatives than Catherine or Mary. He met them once in his life, they were just one of his many foreign relatives. There was not a moment in Charles's life when there wasn't dozens of problems to solve on his own lands. And if he wanted to deal with other problems abroad to help relatives, he had closer relatives than Catherine and Mary in need of help. His sister Mary was queen of Hungary which was invaded by the Ottomans in the late 1520s. His other sister Isabella lost her throne in Denmark and had to flee. The Ottomans were at the gates of Vienna threatening his brother Ferdinand. There were 100000 problems in Charles's lands, and many many others concerning his relatives closer than Catherine or Mary. And he simply had to consider, as king, whether a war with England was worth it for his own countries. He was always king first and man (nephew/cousin) second. He offered safe passage out of England for both Catherine and Mary, which was I think the most he could do and the utmost any foreign royal nephew or cousin would do in those times. Not to mention that it was Charles's pressure on the pope that never allowed him to let Henry divorce Catherine. Thus the pope's legate never sanctioned the divorce, something which was allowed for other kings with similar cases before (Louis XII of France, etc) with better political background. But because of Charles, Henry was not in a good political position. Charles's troops sacked Rome in 1527 and he put pressure on the pope never to allow the divorce. I think that equals doing a lot for Catherine. Really, what more should Charles have done? And accurate as Carlos rey emperador or this Becoming Elizabeth are, they are not the proper basis for historical judgements, they are just tv shows.

Precisely what bothered me everytime they forced historical revisionism on a otherwise well made show. They did this same thing even in The Spanish princess casting a black woman as the lady in waiting of COA.Not only is that outrageous they also insulted real spanish men and women who were alive during that time period. Spaniards are darker than western Europeans with dark eyes mostly with the exception of ones with direct western ancestors ex. Catherine of Aragon. However they were not black. So these scenes with attempted revisionism make this show look very ridiculous and appalling to say the least!
