    What Enclosure are you using for your 2.5" Server? Cause I'm currently faced with the same "issue" here, I got a R815 from a friend but have a few 3.5" HDDs I want to use with it, however the USB 3.0 enclosure I got which holds 4 drives doesn't play nicely with an unpowered USB 3.0 PCI card, it seems to really bug out and throw errors, and then ESXi just goes ahead and handles the drives at 2.0 speeds. I don't want to use too much extra power creating a extra NAS or something, so kind of searching for a "dumb" solution ^^

    Here is a link to the one I'm using. So far working well. But, it does poweroff if it doesn't have a signal to the USB, so I have to remember to turn it on before I power up the server, or my ZFS pool isn't loaded. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003X26VV4/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 (not an affiliate link btw).

    In the next version of Synologys SRM (their router management OS) all their routers will get VLAN support. Which means you can split your WLAN into (at most) five separate networks. I have both their router (the middle one) and a NAS (a DS 918+) and most of the stuff you are running here I can run on them in some shape or form. I bought the NAS a few years ago but it was not until this year I truly understood what I can do with them. Thanks in part to your channel! Interesting video, thanks. At 8:30 you talked about running containers on Proxmox as well as VMs - presumably those can only be Linux (vs VMs), I was wondering what the benefits of running those in Proxmox vs Docker were?

  • @AwesomeOpenSource

    @AwesomeOpenSource

    2 жыл бұрын

    So Proxmox lets me spin up LXC containers, which are a little different from Docker. LXC emulates the entire OS, but not the hardware, while VMs emulate hardware and OS, and docker emulates just what's needed for the app. So LXC gives you a full Linux OS while consuming only a fraction of the hardware resources. AS for Proxmos, it gives me a nice dashboard, and view of what I'm running as well as quick controls to spin up / down what I need. For testing scripts, etc. I can spin up a Linux VM in seconds, and if I bork it, I just destroy it and do it again.

If I just want to know the IPs of all of the interfaces on my system, this is the command I use. Well, not quite. I have it aliased to something much shorter of course. Edit: Oh well, I commented before reading other comments. Looks I'm by far not the first one to mention this command. Sorry about that.

    Thank you for your time and content. After watching most of your video I couldn’t determine much of what you are doing with your home network. Seemed mostly focused on the management of the network but what’s the purpose of it? Internal content like movies or photo hosting via your NAS? DNS? Home automation? Learning? I’ve not yet heard a good explanation of Docker containers I need to self host. What are you hosting that makes your technology better? Just curious.

  • @AwesomeOpenSource

    @AwesomeOpenSource

    Don't know that it makes my tech better. I just like using Docker because it allows me to easily spin something up, try it, and just destroy it completely from my system without worrying about left over files or configs hanging around causing havoc on my host system or host VM. Docker is far lighter weight than a full VM, and I can setup multiple applications on a single server and have them be completely separated from each other, or set them up to communicate as needed. That said, I run my network for education, for my family, and my work from home job. So it's a bit more complicated than most home networks.

    So, a tip if you can't get to many devices of the wireless network because of wiring issues. You can switch to WiFi 6, that's specifically made for lots of clients, and is faster. My wireless internet speed over wifi, with WiFi 6 is between 900 to 1000Mbits/s. So I don't have any problems. Only problem is the 2,5Ghz devices, that are unable to switch to 5Ghz, that are close to the microwave. When the microwave is on, the package loss is insane.

    Honestly, I have just slowly built up my knowledge over time. The best place to start is at the beginning. I don't say that to be a wise-guy, but because it's really true. Start with some basics. If you don't understand the basics of networking, and how IP addresses, and ports work, then start with a few tutorials on that. Maybe get a second router to play with and just connect a few devices to it that you can have some fun with. Next, start digging in on the basics of setting up a web server like LAMP stack. But, just go at your own pace, and before you know it, you'll be self hosting even more than I am. Jump over to my community at discuss.opensourceisawesome.com and ask any questions. There are some great people on there with tons of knowledge that love to share, including me.

    I've used HAProxy under pfSense, but if/when I move to OPNsense I may just replace it with the Caddy plugin. Yeah, you have to write the Caddyfile yourself, but "proxy this hostname to that IP/port" takes all of three lines of text in a Caddyfile, and it'll handle the certs and TLS termination automatically as well. OPNsense's HAProxy implementation is a bit easier to work with than pfSense's, but it's still four different pages you need to touch for every new hostname proxy you want to use.

    @tjmarx

    Жыл бұрын

    @@AwesomeOpenSource That would be cool mate. Net Monitor *for* Employees Pro as the name suggests is intended for real time monitoring of employees or students on your network. It's really intended for deployments of 20 or more systems but I don't use it for that many systems. I've been using it for a few years now to manage my windows servers and monitor my families PCs. The default dashboard provides a small live remote desktop view of each system with a user selectable refresh rate. From there you can zoom in on a system *without* taking remote control (which is great when kids are meant to be doing an assignment that's due tomorrow but you suspect they're watching KZread instead). Sessions can be recorded with remote screen capture so you have evidence the event took place, and recording can be set to automatically start on trigger, at tined intervals or at specific time of day. You can choose to take remote control at any time. There is one directional messaging that can be set to full screen remotely and refuse to close without user acknowledgement. Messages can be sent to any combination of systems (agents) from a single computer to network wide. There is remote resources management, processes/services can be started or killed remotely, as can full programs, websites and even scripts. Anything you open can have elevation of privilege applied. Remote file management is there. There are website blacklists and whitelists, and the ability to blacklist based on specific url or based on keyword appearing in the url. There are reports detailing application & website usage, as well as a keystroke logger which is a useful security tool when managing web facing servers, but I suspect is intended for overly zealous corps who want to see what their employees are doing. I only use it as a safety on my servers though. It also has desktop sharing, so the administrator can share their desktop to any other system, or share the desktop of any system with any other system. I find that useful for throwing desktops up on TVs if there's no other way to cast that thing. For example games. This mode also has a whiteboard feature which I find useful for family meetings like when we're planning a camping trip, I can throw a website up on the living room TV and I can grant whiteboard access to everyone elses laptops so we can discuss and plan together. Lastly it has the pretty standard remote controls like workstation locking, remote ctrl+alt+del, remote shutdown, blank screen, disable mouse/keyboard/USB/printing/sound/task manager/etc As I say I've been using it for a few years now and whilst it does have some bugs it mostly fits my needs. The big problems I have are that it doesn't work on android so there's no remote management of phones which would be handy. But the real problem is it is restricted to only on the same physical network (can work across vLANs), and does not work over the internet when either the administrator or the agent system are off the network. My NextCloud install has a tendency to stop it's docker instance whenever I specifically leave the house, then my wife starts messaging me panicking her photos aren't getting backed up. It would be nice to be able to restart that while I'm away. Conversely, my kids schools do everything via laptops. For what I hope are obvious reasons I haven't given them the administrative passwords for their laptops, they operate in a windows standard user interface. Sometimes however they need to install new software while at school so I have a child messaging me, then we have to initiate a remote access session using zoho remote so I can type in a password. That's a lot of fussing around so it would be nice to just load their desktops remotely with a single click as I do at home to complete the password. Whilst I'm certainly happy to pay for software that could do those last two things, if you have an open source solution that I can donate to instead all the better.

    fwiw, my experience with OPNsense has been that the update process is much, MUCH more smooth than pfsense, but the overall experience is a fair bit more buggy than pfsense.

    Indeed I have. I have a video on it and using it with Home Assistant to get notifications when objects are detected via Push notification. It's a really nice system. Just a bit technical from the setup side.

    Definitely has a different look to it. I see some server stats on their screen shot, but nothing to say if individual apps are up / running. Is that possible with Fenrus?

    I’ve still not gotten into Kubernetes, I’m getting there, just not there yet. I see the appeal, but for my purposes it just hasn’t been a need, and that’s really what pushes me sometimes.

    @@AwesomeOpenSource That's why You missed all awesome stuff about k8s on this channel and I really hope that some day that will change :) Kubernetes addresses most of problems that now You need to do manually like service monitoring, logging and data backup (if You want). It may be not that easy at start but later You will never come back to just docker or heavy vm. :) Good luck! :)

    @@AwesomeOpenSource oh not mining. Just the node software. It lets you verify and broadcast transactions yourself so you don't need to trust third parties. It's pretty handy. I only do bitcoin (all the others are centralized/not FOSS so I don't trust them).
