    Yeah, I had to get it. The pace is a lot slower than you might be used to, but thanks to that it also plays quite different from other brawlers. I love it!

    Me too! The pace is interesting because it's a lot faster than the original game, but also slower than many modern brawlers. They struck a good balance I think.

    This is everything. I believe this is the best beat’em up in the genre revival. Crowd control is not annoying and I love it. The runs are fast and rewarding and challenging… Only complaint is I want to spend cash to change my upgrade options instead of running the level again… for different upgrade options… I play on max difficulty, it really requires you to understand the gameplay. It is amazing.

    I agree, it's among the best revivals the genre has seen to date. Really glad you're enjoying it!

    Man; you nailed it with this review. Gonna hafta start checking for ya b/c it sounds like we approach games w/ a similar mindset. Anywho good to see I'm not the only one that appreciates what the devs have accomplished here....they've somehow managed to modernize DD while still showing an absolute reverence for the source material. Never knew a tag system in a brawler could be such a game-changer & the unlock/cash/token system & having to make hard choices around upgrading/continuing has somehow managed to emulate the feeling of not knowing if I had enough tokens to get through the arcade games as a kid lol I'd proudly include this game in the same convo as Streets of Rage 4 & Shredder's Revenge (2 of my all-time favorite brawlers)

    Hell yeah SoR4 and Shredder's Revenge! Got videos on both of those too. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I put stuff out regularly so would love to see you here!

    I'm 46 years old, cut my teeth on Double Dragon and Double Dragon II on the NES and consider beat-em-ups the best genre, bar-none (in my humble opinion!). How else can you live out your Van Damme-iest movie-starring fantasies?! Double Dragon Gaiden Rise of the Dragons represents the pinnacle, as far as I'm concerned. From the detailed post-apocalyptic environments & backgrounds, LUSH animation (seriously, check out Duke's animations from the artist's portfolio on ArtStation) to the INSANE music score and HARD-hitting sound effects (name BASS-ier hits in another title, I'll wait!), there's simply no equal (all due respect to the other recent heavy hitters in the genre, i.e. Streets of Rage 4, Final Vendetta, Fight n' Rage, Shredder's Revenge, etc). "Crowd Control" notifications (along with the AMAZING announcer & raucous cheering) are the gift that continuously gives & NEVER get old!!! Raymond (@secretbase) poured his own money, heart and soul into this game and it shows. I play this with my 11 year-old daughter weekly and we're forging memories for life. This review was pitch-perfect: smartly written, eloquently spoken and a blast to watch/listen to. Thanks for covering this absolute GEM! p.s. you should really check out the amazing game that laid the foundation for DDG, @secretbase's "Streets of Red: Devil's Dare Deluxe"! p.p.s. try purchasing only the upgrades that fill your SP meter the fastest (SP moves cost 50% less; completely refill SP when performing Crowd Control; SP meter recharges faster, etc), then see how many of them you can chain/cancel in a single combo! I hit 6(!) SPs with Billy Lee in one!!

    The same systems apply to the game “Streets of Red”. It’s from the same developer. Worthwile to check out. I’m enjoying DD Gaiden atm. Anubis and environmental hazards rub me the wrong way a bit, though 😅

    Actually I've found the environmental hazards to be a bit of a puzzle in itself....once I learned the nuances of everyone's moveset like which air attacks land where & which specials allow me to use the hazards to my advantage I actually started enjoying it. It can be a bit of a rush to swiss cheese a roomful of enemies w/ tagouts & crowd control & knocking them into spikes & electricity & coming out relatively unscathed. As for Anubis I recommend unlocking the bosses sooner than later; gaining understanding of their movesets on subsequent playthroughs has actually made me better at fighting them (I'm actually starting to wonder if that was by design...)

    Chibi double dragon. Why?

  • @ghostdog3566

    @ghostdog3566

    Not as chibi as it looks at first glance; bout comparable to Shredder's Revenge (which also has slightly enlarged heads)....but man I'm telling you the animation & expressions add alot of character that the NES sprites couldn't pull off (in fact DD4 tried to copy the NES style to a tee & came off boring af....& I think it was made by the original creator...)
