Cruising doesn’t have to be expensive! I was about to cruise for 13 days on board the Norwegian Getaway for $511 which is $39 per day! Great price for travel, food, cabin and entertainment. Enjoy!

    I’m 66 years old and I took a 9 cruise to Alaska on the Norwegian Sun in September and loved it!!! I thought I would get lonely by myself but that didn’t happen! I’ve been widowed for 18 years and realized very quickly that if I didn’t push myself I would have a very lonely life. I’ve talked with people from all over the world on that cruise. I highly recommend it but be sure you get travel insurance because you might need help if you don’t have someone traveling with you. Also, watch lots of videos about the different cruise lines and learn from the experiences that people share here. Just do it singles! 🤗

    Because if you stay in a regular cabin, you’re taking the space of 2 people so they charge you for 2! That’s why the studio cabin is great, you only pay for 1 👍

    @dilekavan5796 some NCL newer ships have solo cabins. These were designed for ONE passenger. Some other lines are doing the same. However, if you book a non solo cabin you are paying the price for two passengers. If it is listed as 900 per passenger, you as a solo would pay 900 x 2. Which is 1800. I've sailed many times solo and I would consider it safe.

    My older brother and I did the same on Norwegian Cruise Line several years ago. We did the same, booked the studio rooms. Our rooms were next to each other. Neither of us had the Wi-Fi or drink package either. We were up and out each am about 6:30 am, and the took in a show or whatever each night, so back in the room by about 10:30 to 11. Even though, I met nice people in that group but of course, there were some with little annoying 😅. Except for the excursion days, on the sailing days, I enjoyed the activities on the ship by myself and loved it. I went alone on a Royal Caribbean Anthem of the Seas cruise. I loved it -- not being on anyone else's schedule was terrific. I'm a writer, so I used a lot of the time to write, so I didn't mind the down time in the middle of the day. They also have free-style dining (they call it My Time Dining). The only downside was that I had to book a regular cabin for two so it was more costly than a solo cabin, but I love to have a balcony. I'd like to do one on Serenade of the Seas, which has solo balcony cabins. But for $511 for 13 days I would SO BOOK THAT CRUISE!! That's an amazing price.

    I love traveling alone! I took a 21-day cruise from Buenos Aires to Valparaiso, Chile (not far from Santiago) in my late 30s and had a blast. Loved that area of the world so much that I decided to stay for 3 1/2 months. I was between jobs at the time and figured that I may not have the opportunity to do that again. What opened my eyes so much is how many people from Europe were there for the same amount of time as me. I met a couple from Berlin one was a doctor and one was a lawyer and they only worked 6 months a year.

    Great content Ben, one important tip when cruising is to leave yourself time to just chill. The cruise planner is packed with activities and it's easy to get drawn into thinking that you have to fill every hour on-board. Mid afternoon is a great time to take time for yourself, read a book, listen to some music, catch a few zz's. Another tip is to use the opportunity cruising provides to try something you normally wouldn't do, check the daily planner and pick something, it's a great way to expand your experience and hopefully have some fun.

    Thank you for your solo cruise information. I have taken many solo cruises where I've had to pay double. Seems unfair to pay for a second person's dining, entertainment and lodging when there's only me. This past December I discovered solo prices with Fred Olsen cruises and had an amazing time at a much more reasonable price. And I enjoyed the company on the ship of many other solo travelers. I have sailed Solo with Norwegian since 2010, on EPIC. But you surely don't save money by booking the "Studio" cabins. They can only be booked for one passenger, but come with double beds and 100+ sq feet of nice space. If you are shy, the Studios are fine because you have a built-in group of fellow solo travelers all in one private section of the ship. It's very nice, but not worth paying more for those cabins than being one person in a standard interiour cabin...

    Good video. Only one of my 5 cruises was solo, and it was quite different from yours, and crossed the Atlantic twice. It was in 1973 starting and ending in NYC, going to see a solar eclipse off the coast of Africa. The only ports were Tenerife and Dakar. I was 15 years old, traveling alone, and sharing a cabin with 3 strangers who of course I got to know well with 4 bunks in a small cabin, bathrooms down the hallway. There were amazing classes and programs on the ship. On eclipse day (plus a couple of days before it) the decks were covered with all of our telescopes. It was 16 days, and my fare was $500. The cabin had just a porthole, which got bolted shut on rough days, when big waves would put the porthole intermittently underwater, and sometimes we'd actually see fish. For every meal, I was seated with the same people at the same table for 8, none of whom were my cabin mates. Despite that, by the end of the cruise, I had probably met half of the 2000 passengers, and all of the lecturers, several of whom were quite famous. Just an amazing time. How I convinced my parents to let me spend my life savings to go, is a whole other story.

    I am 63. I went on a cruise with my sisters at 27 and with my husband on our honeymoon, both Norwegian. We had to dress to have dinner in the dining room, and there was assigned seating and an assigned time. We selected the early seating and did the shows and clubs after dinner. With my sisters, there were three of us and we had dinner every night with a guy in his 60s traveling with his two girlfriends who were sisters in their early thirties. We had the impression that he hired them for the trip. We were courteous and friendly but we had nothing in common. 😅 I would love to cruise again and I love the idea of not having assigned seats and assigned times and not getting dressed up. I like the idea of just sitting with new people and enjoy meeting many people. Can you do the whole thing in casual clothing?

  • @TravelWithBen121

    @TravelWithBen121

    Ай бұрын

    Sounds like fun cruises! Getting dressed up totally depends on the cruise line / itinerary / ship. This cruise was completely casual so they did have 'theme nights' but it was totally optional. Some cruise lines are more strict with the themes, so on formal night, they won't let you into the main dining room if you're not dressed correctly. The dress code only applies for the main dining room, definitely no dress code for the buffet, so if you don't plan on going to the main dining room, you can wear casual clothes everyday if you want. I love the freestyle dining, I want to eat dinner when I want, not when I get told to. The good think about not having a regular dinner time is you can sit with different people each time if you want to. Thanks for watching!

    I'm happy to have found your channel (while looking for a certain cruise ship's reviews) -- it's so interesting to me that solo travel is seen as so "uncommon" :-) I'm 65, female, and have traveled and lived solo since leaving everything and taking off at 43 years old with nothing. Lived in 10 countries so far and many cities within those countries -- Italy being the longest at about 18 years (even have written and published a book about all of this). The reason I'm commenting is to say I'm really glad to see content like this, especially solo cruising. It's really tough to find an affordable price. I was looking at NCL for my upcoming cruise in a month but wasn't able to make it work financially -- so I've chosen to give Costa another chance (after a 13 year break from them LOL). All of your reasonings for solo cruising (and solo travel itself) are absolutely spot on. Never have I felt alone or lonely, have no qualms whatsoever about eating alone or chilling in a restaurant alone with my kindle or people watching and enjoying wine-and-food paring, etc. I'm so happy also that many cruise lines have begun to lower their horridly expensive single supplements, and NCL is great for the studios -- but you do have to get them immediately as they get taken in a hot second! I've subscribed...keep it up! (pretty funny the wind tunnel -- I had that on a transatlantic from southampton to NY on the queen vic during a crossing the first week of January!)

    I am so glad that you found my channel, Maria! 😁 I agree with you, solo cruising is 'not normal, but honestly, who cares what anyone thinks???? I sure don't. Everyone is living their own life and it's no one's business what anyone else does! It's so great that you've traveled so much! (I actually lived in Rome, Italy for 6 months) Hopefully more cruise lines will begin to cater for solo cruisers, the studio cabins on NCL are great! Perfect for 1 person, in my opinion. Thanks for subscribing! I filmed a video everyday during the cruise so check out the others if you haven't yet! Thanks again! 🌹

    Awesome video here Ben, and thanks for highlighting what cruising is like solo! 😎 I'm a habitual solo traveller myself (I have pretty strong ASD, so it comes with the territory 🌻) and the few times I've travelled with others I've found travelling _en compagne_ surprisingly difficult, especially where decisions on what to do and transport connections are concerned. Yet I've often felt uncomfortable with the idea of cruising solo part for the (typically) higher fares, and also the concern that through my ASD and difficulty mixing with others I'd experience such solitude that a cruise might affect my mental health. 🤯 I've been watching a lot of cruise related content lately (I'm getting close to _that_ age, so I suppose YT's algorithm is working properly! 😆) and I think I'd love to give it a go if I could afford it...But for a solo traveller with significant ASD and very underdeveloped social skills would this really be a wise thing for me to consider? 🤔

  • @TravelWithBen121

    @TravelWithBen121

    3 ай бұрын

    ‘That age’?! How dare you!! 😂 only joking. Cruising used to only be for older people but it’s definitely not anymore. I understand what you means when traveling with a group and you all need to decide/agree on what to do and it can be very frustrating as everyone has things they want to do but feel like they should stay together. Cruising solo literally gives you the freedom to do whatever you want, whenever you want. If you want to sleep in until noon, you can do that. If you want to have 3 dinners, you can do that. No compromises and no one telling you what to do. When it comes to meeting people, it’s really up to you and your mood. There were some days when I wouldn’t speak to anyone all day, because I didn’t want to 😂 but there were other days where I would chat to people in the lounge, play a game show with strangers, have a drink at the bar and chat, chat to people next to me at dinner. Definitely do a cruise if you can, it’s a great experience and the environment is very relaxed so no pressure to do anything! Good luck 🤞

It certainly would be nice that they would cater to solos, but on the newer ships, it's not the case. Thanks for the review!

    I have gone on Princess and Celebrity - they both had freestyle dining, however, I think the travel agency we went through procured that as one of our perks for taking the cruise. I believe some people had assigned dinner times. I wouldn't like that. Also, it is really enjoyable to watch this. I am really looking forward to cruising alone in the future. I have cruised twice with a friend, but I did, or didn't do things I would like to have done (or not done). We had somewhat different priorities and travel styles, so I am looking forward to going it on my own next time.

    The Norwegian solo cabins are pretty good, but sometimes a regular inside cabin on the same ship can be cheaper even for one person. So you need to look for that. Also, Royal Caribbean and Celebrity have solo balcony cabins on some ships. (Real balconies, not just the virtual ones.)

    @@mikiweaver3558 Same here. When the price seems too good to be true, watch out. If you have to fly to another state or country to board, that's an addded expense plus hotel, ubers, meals, etc. A solo 7 day cruise, on Norwegian, to Alaska from Seattle, was advertised at $1465. I booked it and it ended up costing me $4000 and I live in Florida!

    Thanks for your video. About pricing you didn't mention the NCL daily service charge (kind of gratuity) of 20 $ per day/person, which is automatically charged to every passenger's onboard account. Means, in your case there is an additional amount of 260 $ (13 day cruise) to pay. Otherwise passengers can decide to reduce or even have removed the service charge at guest service desk right in time before onboard account is closed at midnight the day before disembarkation. I was solo traveller in November 2023 on Norwegian Bliss and had a Solo Studio. And in December 2023 I was solo at Norwegian Spirit in "normal" cabin for solo use (12 days going home from USA to French-Polynesia). Both cruises as solo traveller were great, I met a lot of interesting and nice people from all over the world. And great friendships have developped since then. By the way NCL offers on each ship cabins for solo travellers (smaller ships do not have the Studios). Next cruise in 2024 will be together with my son - we have 2 Solo Studios, so each of us has privacy. Greetings from our paradise island Moorea 🌴🏖🇵🇫🇫🇷🇪🇺

    In port Elizabeth you can take a day tour to a wild life game park about 1hour north of the port to see the big five wild life. We did this a few years ago of a Queen Elizabeth cruise back to Australia. In Cape Town, get on the hop on hop off bus and get of at the Cable car stop for Tabletop mountain. Magnificent views! Come back down and join the hop on hop off bus and come back to the city via the coastal beach suburbs. Get off again for lunch or coffee. Very beautiful coastline. Get back on bus back into CapeTown city. Be careful walking around in both Port Elizabeth and CapeTown. DO NOT wear any jewelry. Some people that were on the same trip as us had jewelry ripped off their neck and arms in the middle of the day in Capetown city centre. If going out at night in CapeTown go in a group or take a taxi

    I wouldn't have enough vacation time to do a 13 day cruise, but I did a 7-night Alaska cruise (plus 3 days in Seattle before/after) and a solo cruise is the BEST solo vacation- it's SO easy. Personally, I had planned to film youtube videos, but ended up not doing it (I don't really do travel content and thought I might want to, but it's just not my niche), but I brought tons of art supplies and basically had an art retreat. I read 8 books, did a ton of paintings, and just had the most relaxing time ever. I met lots of people, but mostly just enjoyed time by myself. It was expensive though- my solo cruise cost as much as it would have been to bring my family of 4. In alaska, I wanted a balcony.
