I’m sure someone else can correct me on this if I’m wrong, but I was told that episodes 5-12 were the animator’s own commentary on not wanting to continue the series. Exploding the city in the 4th episode was as far as they wanted to take it, because that set the bar; I mean, how can you top that? And yet, the animator’s audience wanted them to top that, which is why after the 4th episode, Paul (the audience) is never quite as astonished by what Carl (the animator) does from this point on. Some members of their audience left, and many who stayed (the Paul Mask) chastised them for not creating the same shock factor in episodes 1-4. As the series goes on, Carl also starts to try and reference jokes in the earliest episodes, desperate pleas to the Paul mask-to us-to think he’s still funny, to just leave him alone. The Mask/the audience just continues screaming in Paul’s ears, and the credits music gradually becomes de-tuned and dissonant, again evoking Carl’s worsening mental stability. Continuously trying to meet these standards is what drives him to the edge and bodily harm…It’s a reminder that this animator, and all beloved content creators, are still human. The feeling any reactor/viewer got from seeing Carl’s final moments, is something we shouldn’t have to see of any artist, just for them to get the recognition they deserve, or for them to feel free again.

I was rather confused with the story line after episode 4 but... Damn. That's... I never thought of it like that. I originally watched these after hearing so much about it, and it was amazing. I still get a chuckle out of it here and there, but... to see how well this commentary of yours makes sense, it just seems crazy. I feel bad for the creator, he seems so distressed out of it all, and he gave up. But I feel he also shows him self in Paul. So he decided to show us Paul's body, as he's been drained of ideas, and will to continue dealing with the shenanigans of Carl, who is also the audience. He's been left with nothing but the bickering between himself and the audience fighting with each other for control over Carl, who is eventually taken over by the creator for a small amount of time, and decides to end it all by killing Carl. Paul was his original self, and he died from not having any ideas or will to continue. The mask was the audience when it first came along. As instead of begging Carl to stop, they attempted to make him continue, demanding more. The mask was real, but Paul came along and influenced Carl to throw away the mask, which Carl did, but its essence stayed with him. And after it was all done, Paul and the mask continued to fight for control over Carl, who finally ended it.

@@downbeatdialga1341 I'm fairly certain that's the truth. It's why the series turns away from comedy at the end, and just gets needlessly depressing. He decided to give the people the opposite of what they wanted; instead of comedy, he gave them drama.

@@pogostix807 wont ever happen. The serie was supposed to stop after the fourth one, but people kept asking for more, and the author was NOT happy with it even though he obliged. Its why starting from the fith one Paul isnt quite as shocked anymore, and the Mask is supposed to represent the constant pestering by the audience to "finish his work". I think it's safe to say the author had more than enough of his own creation by the end, hence why he concluded it with carl having done EVERYTHING possible to the point there is no one for him to murder anymore, before killing the characters for good. It's safe to say the Author REALLY wants this to be the end of it. It's already 3 times the episodes he actually wanted to make.

This suprises me that not everyone has seen this series. I used to be so obsessed with llamas with hats, my favorite line was the part he showed in the beginning😂 used to say I was gonna stab people 37 times in the chest (obviously as a joke🙄)

Daaamnnnn I felt bad,from my understanding Karl is Schizophrenic (personality disorder) and Paul is his best friend that has been helping him with everything and his friend died causing him to make a mask and pretend that it was him going around killing people until he finally had enough and killed himself... Welp that was sad👌

Man, I was a teen when I'd watched through fully. Now I'm 35, 2 months & I'll be 35. I miss these series. They were so much more enjoyable than current shows (imo of course)... And yes, I know nostalgia is one heck of a drug.
