    IKEAs design purpose is to be functional & egalitarian i.e, for everyman, not so that wannabe designers can showcase their dubious skills. Just laughable to me. If it’s not good enough for your individual taste then don’t buy it. Nobody in Europe has a problem with admitting to their Ikea stuff that literally everybody has even if they can afford more expensive furniture.

    "Ikea Hack" is a term specifically meaning to customize, upcycle, and transform Ikea furniture. It's been around since 2006, originating from the Ikea Hackers forum community. Is that not what she has done here?

  • @d.colbert6869

    @d.colbert6869

    @Madamoizillion Actually 1983 [near the ex-Woodfield Mall, Schaumburg IL] store in our Chicagoland (city & suburbs) area. We likely began the movement, lol. It was started as a means for young aged adults [employees, students etc] with lower incomes to be able to AFFORD furniture that pleased their sensibilities vs. the typical & OVERPRICED furniture styles that proliferated the furniture market which brought an onslaught of other stores with the same intent. Those being: AFFORDABLE PORTABLES, PIER I, THE CONTAINER STORE, and more. But Affordable Portables was the endeared fave as their pricing + lay-away plans were highly-favored! The other stores sooner-than-later became 'Profiteers' like any other store. So yes, eventually Affordable Portables closed, I believe, due to bankruptcy. Also, those who were 'Creatives' used it to express their art & design skills as well. Now, in my sixties I'm elated to see the IKEA MOD's are still ongoing! Some things in life are just universal, thus 'Staying Power'.

    Hmm... Those IKEA units are hollow framed and thin panelled, they're not solid MDF or natural wood. Because of the weight of the doors its guaranteed eventually the doors will sag/drop due to those thin light hinges and because the screw's won't have a natural grip as it's hollow framed and not solid. As a side hobby, I flip my own antique furniture with modern twists and quirky features, but I make sure all my pieces have quality accessories, attachments and features, as people buy my furniture for their businesses, restaurants and homes. Those doors will be quite hefty for the light IKEA frame, so ideally you'd need something like a Continuous hinge or Piano hinge to take the weight with small panel screw's. It's great that people are being creative with basic furniture, but it's also vital that you know and understand the materials you're working with.

Mdf and lateral twisting forces don't go together because the wood is small partials held together by glue. One suggestion. The Kallax 4x2 when set up in landscape mode place a lot of stress on the bottom. They have been known to bow in the center. So when attaching the legs, build a frame(1x3s flat and joined with pocket screws) and attach that to the bottom and then attach the legs to that. You can then also sldress up the frame to the same color/tone as your cabinet.
