I've rescued a few hummers. They ABSOLUTELY show gratitude. One after I released him came right back and sat on my glasses and just talked for over a minute before finally leaving.

Animals are grateful for a lot of things but the most one is how grateful they are someone gave them a second chance at life. That's a bond that can't be broken
