Director was Lasse Halstrom, later nominated for an Oscar for Cider House Rules and also directed Chocolat. Directed a great many of Abba;s videos. One other interesting point, early on -- and this is a relatively early song - the two ladies had a very limited command of English, the nearly perfect diction they brought to the songs was a matter of practice; later they applied the same technique to re-recording a number of their greatest hits in Spanish, a language that neither spoke.

ABBA started 1972. The two couples are not married any longer but still dear friends. Björn (Bjoern) and Agnetha (Ang-neta), have two children together Linda and Christian and grandchildren so they meet now and then. Now this latest production VOYAGE was made in 5 weeks of hard work 8 hours aday as Björn and Benny told. They were all surprised of how easy everything was like they left the studio last week and not 1982. Since they are very talented and intelligent people they succeded with an album. I've listened to these people since the 60-ies. I'm in the same age as Benny. Björn was in The Hootenanny Singers in the 1960-ies and Benny in The Hep Stars. The girls were vocalists in different dancebands. Anni-Frid started as a 14-year old vocalist mostly singing jazz in the beginning. Agneta was in a danceband, but has produced some recordings as soloartist too writing both notes and lyrics.

I'm so glad that You follow a reaction to ABBA with "Mamma Mía" "Mamma Mía" for me is the best pure pop If someone ask me for what is a pop song, i give them this video and this song "Mamma Mía" have all elements: catchy melodies, more hooks, beauty voices and harmonies, it's funny It's a great song Not in my Top 10, but is really an excellent pop song This is an iconic video for which in Australia they asked that "Mamma Mía" be released as a single They did it in 1975 and it was #1 in Australia for 10 weeks and ABBAmania woke up there When the single was released in England it had a slow but steady rise to #1 and from there toppling none other than 'Bohemian Rhapsody' by Queen (curiosly in January 31, 1976, exactly 45 years ago) "Mamma Mia" together with their predecessor "S.O.S." are the songs that gave ABBA its musical identity as a pop group With both songs began ABBA's great series of more than 20 worldwide hits for six consecutive years 1975/1981, included: Fernando Dancing Queen Take a chance on me Chiquitita The winner takes it all I hope to see you in another reaction to ABBA My best regards from Buenos Aires Argentina,

Congratulation for your reactions, now you learned so more about ABBA, not a one hit wonder (I was the one with green sky and blue grass...it was a joke!!!), that's great, you're a young generation, how should you know all this, but it's so great that the following generations discover ABBA, and they like the music. You say a lot of facts about their music, they were genious in many ways: in singing, performing, song-writing and producing. They worked often over months for one song, and they built their own recording studio to be able to do this. Not usual at this time. And you're so right, they not only tell us stories with the songs, they touched us, our soul and our hearts, like only a few artists can do (like Karen Carpenter). I really love your reactions, you're on the right way, have a lot of fun with music, and let us be with you... *G

Always been a massive ABBA fan dating back to mid 70's. They were never really cool and many would go out of their way to diss them. I remember by the mid 80's after they'd gone their separate ways I'd go to this one pub that had mamma Mia on the Duke box and I'd purposely put it on to see people's reactions... and it was amazing how many would be tapping their feet or hands yet if you'd ask them no doubt they'd say they didn't like them. No 35+ years on its so cool to like them and admit just how good they were. Eagerly awaiting their new tracks later in the year

Granted, many of the younger generation have valid reasons why they would not have listened to or heard their music, but I think in many other parts of the world they would know who ABBA was/is even if they didn't like or listen to them. No malice intended honest. Did you get to see them at that movie theatre? I was lucky enough to see them at Wembley arena - tuesday 6th november 1979 - it's etched in my mind forever! Great reaction, nice to hear you being very enthusiastic! Funny to hear you thinking they were one hit wonders! ABBA did form officially in 1972, they were all friends beforehand, helping each other in projects, Bjorn & Agnetha were married as were Frida & Benny. They became internationally known in 1974 at the Eurovision Song Contest with Waterloo (react!) they had a string of hits since, till they fell apart in 1982. Both couples divorced, but they continued to work together and their final songs were more emotional and adult. There was a major ABBA revival in 1992, and ABBA are still part of pop culture. ABBA Gold Greatest Hits LP is worth a look for reaction songs, as it is their most memorable hits. Lasse Halstrom did produce their videos and he went on to produce Hollywood movies. There was movies including ABBA songs Muriel’s Wedding and Priscilla Queen Of The Desert. A Mamma Mia musical premiered in 1999, and Meryl Streep starred in the movie in 2008, a follow was released in 2018, ABBA reunited in 2017 recording new songs for a virtual reality experience.

Hi Fabian, Saw you last night for the first time looking at ABBA. It's great to listen to someone of your age digging in to this and actually appreciating a different genre and era. Not sure where you at with them but I've been a fan since 17 years old in 76. Bought all the Albums where there's a lot of gems other than their singles. Check out a later song 'The day before you came' you'll have fun sorting that one out. Great work Sir. Cheers. Tony from England UK 👍

What is awesome about their sound is that the first couple of chords of music of most of their songs are soooo distinctive, I immediately know what song is coming!

The 4 part BBC documentary was really good. Anni-Frid (Frida) did a great version of “Sound of Silence.” She is also the only member not from Sweden. She’s Norwegian. Made more in one year than the Gross National Product of Sweden. Were offered $1Billion to reunite and do a concert tour after their break up. Turned it down. Incredible group!! Their 2021 releases are killer!!

Smart comment you made about the way they structured this. I don't really give a rat's patootie about the video, because this is a pretty perfect song. I'm not dissing the video, don't get me wrong...I'm just saying the song doesn't need a video. The verse is pleasant, then you get the two hits,, BOOM BOOM (subdominant, tonic) then laying off a bit (dominant), then BOOM BOOM then laying off a bit, then the very catchy Mama Mia chorus. Glad you did this because everyone is doing their other songs. I've listened to this song repeatedly on some nights, it's so catchy. Musically, it is NOT sophisticated, in terms of the chords in the song; but it's the STRUCTURE. I love this song, without any need to see the video. (If you take the video away from a lot of current acts, which rely on dance troupes, explosions, flames, and sexy outfits and editing; what's left is, in a lot of instances, not so compelling.) Now you've pretty much set me up for dreaming about it all night, but I'll take it. :)

From what I understand, this was a B Side song that Australia shot to the top of the charts, which then helped ABBA explode world wide. And Australia still has a massive love affair with ABBA

There are not many bands who could bring out a 19 song greatest hits album (ABBA Gold) one year and bring out a completely different 20 song greatest hits collection (More ABBA Gold) the following year and still have hits that weren't on either album. "Happy New Year" springs to mind.

They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010 and a lot of people seemed to have objected. I'm glad they were. They aren't rock, perse, but they are remarkable. It's truly a shame that they were classified as AM (as opposed to FM) music. (side note, I believe this video was released before Bohemian Rhapsody...the "first music video"...)

Outside of the UK, Scandinavian musicians have had far greater impact on mainland Europe, just check the numbers for people like Roxette and A-ha. I'd say in Europe, ABBA is in the long run more popular than the Beatles who have a greater presence in the US.
