This Harmless Centipede will CURE Your FEAR!

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Even as someone who is very fond of them, I can't deny that giant centipedes can be rather intimidating animals. But not all centipedes are huge, fast and voracious predators, and in this video, we'll be taking a close look at one of the most docile, harmless centipedes on earth: Ethmostigmus muiri. This is a species endemic to northern Australia, and it possesses features that make me suspect it hunts termites.
Here is the taxonomic study referenced in the video:

I was recently fortunate to have made the acquaintance of a moderately oversized free-range house centipede, whom I have named "Sir Forcipule, Knight-Wurm of the Minute Realms". I believe the naming of the most prominent members of one's domestic microfauna ought to be strongly encouraged. What say you?

Centipedes, while I think they're so cool they're one of the only bugs that still give me the heebeegeebees, but this guy with his little face and stumpy legs definitely had me thinking it was adorable. So my fear of this particular centipede is definitely cured! 😂

I liked this video! It's always refreshing to see centipedes portrayed as regular animals and not monsters out to get you. It's fascinating to learn how different E. muiri and E. rubripes are despite their close relation. I'm curious how they managed to evolve in a way that let the 2 co-exist instead of compete. I'm glad I found this channel!

I think my brain must work back to front. I started keeping tarantulas in order to try to overcome my arachnophobia, or at least ease it, yet centipedes have never bothered me. I once owned an S. hardwickei that was slightly intimidating but nothing more. Even owned a truly giant S. dehaani and far from being some kind of monster it was just a beautiful and fascinating specimen and was a joy to keep. For me centipedes are the most fascinating invertebrates on the planet.

Yeah, docile is rarely a word I could use to describe most large centipedes. This one in the video is super chill. I once kept a large desert scolopendra species as a pet and that thing was anything but chill. I had a buddy get bitten by a wild member of that same species, and although far from a serious medically significant bite, it was nasty none-the-less. He even had light systemic effects from it.

Great video! Though the centipede's head and body proportions aren't as extreme it reminds me of small-headed sea snake (Hydrophis macdowelli) which certainly uses it's weird body proportions to facilitate the capture of its prey. While the hypotheses of eating termites kinda makes sense it does seem a bit thick for their tunnels, maybe earthworms or possibly snails, ussing it's smaller head to pull them from inside their shells once they have retreated into them.

I first encountered that spider on the monster bug wars YT channel, but other then and a few pictures online, you can't rly find anything about her. Only guess would be that it is a wandering spider of some sort.

Same with me and sharks, I watched Jaws and yes was scared as a kid but also fascinated by sharks, I wanted to learn as much as possible about them and at 17 on a trip to the USA I had the chance to go shark diving, first in a cage then to Tiger Shark Bay, names a bit misleading lol, not a bay it's a large shallow stretch of water in the Caribbean known for a high number of sharks. It was there at 17 I got into the water after the sharks had eaten the fish bait thrown in that I came face to face with 10ft long tiger sharks and. They were adorable, so curious and inquisitive so playful really it was hilarious to interact with them I even hand fed one half a tuna from my hand and stroked it as it swam by me its head and teeth 1ft away and yet it never showed aggression. My entire world view of sharks was shattered that day and I've gone on to dive few more times with those incredible animals from tigers to bulls, lemons, reefs and when in Angola Africa about 20 miles off the coast. A great white. One of if not my favourite creature in the world! They're incredible animals just incredible. Sharks are about as old as centipedes been around since the Devonian period 420 to 360 million years ago. They've hardly changed since then which like centipedes is pretty astonishing if you ask me.

@@BugsandBiologyam I correct in saying that when Coyote Peterson said that centipedes have fangs that is not correct and the correct term for what centipedes use to envenomate prey or predators in self defence is in fact forcipules or maxillipeds ? Although if I remember correctly from watching Coyote Peterson videos on KZread about centipedes he may have referred to what centipedes use to envenomate prey or predators in self defence as maxillipeds once or twice

@@BugsandBiology Not true at all imo! It's centipedes I have trouble keeping, scorps are a breeze. False bottom system, adjust the ventilation until you see them out and about regularly, no problem at all. They are nocturnal though, so if you go to bed at 10.30, you're probably not going to see much of them, that I will admit.
