This Guy Almost Gave Me A Heart Attack - Autumn Landscape Photography

Brace yourself, you're about to learn a bunch of stuff! In this video, I show you a clever digital camera hack for those times when your filter just isn't big enough for your lens.
I also teach you about composition in one of the most beautiful parts of the USA.
While embarking on a 5000-mile road trip to Texas I witness the most spectacular light I've ever seen. It's a shame I'm stuck on the highway.
Amanda bags a major grocery haul from Walmart but I'm only interested in the bottle of Snoop Dog.
While teaching you guys a tutorial at the gorgeous waterfalls of Ricketts Glen I'm rudely interrupted by Alex but I put him to use as my cameraman and all is forgiven. If only I could find those lens cloths I stole from him back in the summer.
I try to convince Alex to cross the river but he's more interested in getting me naked. That gives me an idea for an easy way to make money by getting people to pay me to keep my clothes on. I anticipate immense wealth any time soon.
Will my camera hack work? What am I going to do with those amazing 'sunset over the highway' shots and exactly which stench do I describe as ''horrific''?
There's really only one way to find out.
Thanks for watching

Always cool to see the “guests” or workshop customers in the videos “get” the videos and become part of the show. Well done
Looking forward to seeing Alex cross the river! 😆
Welcome to Texas!! Known for our skies and freaking flat everything else. 10 hours will just about take you through Texas. Cheers from Dallas!
Now that was pretty awesome even tho you didn’t have the best autumn conditions !! That’s a hack even Grumpton could benefit from!
Now Gavin, I know I keep telling you to, "get a proper camera". But I cant deny the quality of that Sony and Zeiss combo... Its almost like Adam Gibbs took the picture. 😂 Thanks for another great video!

Ricketts Glen?!?! This is my home state and one of my favorite shooting areas ever! Loved the video!
As a Sony shooter I watched this because of the preview where you said you despise the Sigma 14-24! That's the best wide angle zoom made for Sony!

Whew I continued to watch and saw you were talking about the Sony Zeiss instead.
Clever filter hack that Gavin. Boy that lens hood has had some action! Can’t believe how much driving you get through to get to locations👏
Saw your first vlog when you first visited Ricketts Glen and got me motivated to go there. Took photos of 11 of the 22 water falls but my fasthma got the best of me to go any further. One I think was a very good to great one and two pretty good. I only live 1 1/2 drive from there and heard all about it but never got around to going there until your first vlog motivated me. BTW, love your channel and your antics. Keep up the great work.

Those light rays, wow 🤩 - The shot at 14:05 is awesome 🤩
Beautiful work Gavin, I really like the waterfall and stairs via your CPL hack!
Love these videos - but got to share in the USA it’s miles not Kilometers and your images are remarkably up to par with Thomas’s work - which is spectacular. Hopefully you make it all the way to California. Again brilliant job on the waterfall and tree photo. Thanks
Excellent video, great mix of photography and comedy. Love the waterfall/ cascade images, just enough colour to make them successful....Best wishes.
That light always happens to me as well. Driving along minding my own business and a rainbow of colors dancing in the sky.
Hey Gavin I loved this video of yours and the bad comedy you do is nuts but the photographs are really good. Special shout to Amanda she is the best in your videos her humour is awesome.
Damn, I was in PA in late November and timed it perfect catching the last of the fall colours before it all finally dumped over one weekend. Got to say I was totally blown away with the stunning colours that I thought I had missed. Thanks for showing this location as it is well within the scope for me to take a day out later this year when I revisit. Beautiful shots as always. If you get a chance take a peek at the Great Falls Park in Virginia. I was there and luckily got some awesome sunrise shots of the falls which I have to say I was spoiled for choice for comps. Sunrise was at 6:58am, the park opened at 7, I was at the gate ready to run (after parking) to the shoot location that thankfully gave me an extra 20 minutes to set up due to a tall ridge obscuring the rising sun but when it broke. WOW! Little bit of food for thought if you are down that way in the future. 🙂
Great video of an iconic location. I live in the general region of Rickets Glen and the fall here was not the best as it lacked color and the leaves fell fast. It was a very wet summer which seemed to lead to the leaves falling before the colors set in. I have photos from last year on the same date that show an incredible difference in colors.

About the light popping off while driving...I feel your pain. I was driving home from a camping trip in the sierra and I saw the most surreal sunset and light I have ever seen...always when in the car. p.s. My trick for CPLs on an ultrawide zoom is to buy the Nikon 14-24 and put a magnetic 112mm CPL directly on to the filter screw magnetic ring. All joking aside it is a very nice ability.
It looks like you were at Ricketts Glen the same week I made it. I had sun the whole time I was there. Bright sun and a few colors. Grrrr
Love the mini course concept. Hope you keep them coming.
I was at Ricketts a week before you and it was the tail end of the colors. I will definitely try again next year.
Thank you for sharing the free video. Despite knowing how to fix it, I downloaded it. You truly motivate me to keep learning. Thank you so much, Gavin. Take care.
With the 12-24 G you can "clip" a 77mm filter inside the lens hood and then use a polarizer without any vigneting starting from 14mm, that's a cool trick I use :)
Great video. Nice spot! If you’re ever back in West Yorkshire Goit Stock Falls near Bingley is almost identical to those falls and great in the autumn.
I love Ricketts Glen and have shot those very falls many times, but you took it to another level with some fresh perspective and compositions. Also, not sure if you've ever used it, but another polarizing hack in a pinch is to use polarized sunglasses in front of your lens. Thanks for another great video!

Amazing video, and spectacular waterfall photography. Looking forward to the next video!
“Just try and ignore Alex’s really taut butt cheeks” had me laughing out loud!
My favorite falls!!!! I visit there at least three times are year. You should wait until the falls freeze in the winter 🤣😂. I hope you did the lake Rose loop.
Awesome episode! The polarised image was super 👏👏👏
Fantastic video and great tips! What a cliff hanger though, looking forward to the next one 👍
I’ve been going there for years. Only an hour from me and it never disappoints.
That was really cool. Thanks for the tips. I always get to laugh and learn something new when watching your channel. Keep up the amazing work.
Gavin - Keep your clothes on..... that'll be $20! Great shots despite missing the best of the fall colour. And sorry to see all of that Gluten-free food that you had to endure! Cheers.
I love a swirling vortex too, especially with colored leaves in them. I was gonna say, you're getting close to me (In Ohio), I'd show you some photo areas, but then it occurred to me, that the color's long been gone and it's a frozen wasteland right now, so these must have been previously recorded, lol. I did a whole waterfall tour in the Fall and drove around to a bunch of them with my camera. :D
Great video and tips
When’s this Fotostripper channel starting?
Great video, lovely photos. It's a great channel. I can't wait for the next video
Beautiful images! Lovely location. Fun shenanigans. Texas is the place I've seen light rays like that the most often. Too funny: "taught b..t cheeks", so many jokes, so little space. Good content, thank you!
Hey Gavin - have you ever thought about putting a tutorial together about creating a slide show? I really like how you show your photos “if this shot turns out - here’s the photo” with the music as the photo slowly goes from larger than the frame to just filling the frame. Who chooses your music for this? You are a wonderful instructor taking the time to explain all of your steps. Thanks for all of your tutorials, KZread videos… one other thing - I hope Gluten Free has improved as back in the day it was awful! Norm
There's a Walmart everywhere, lol. Well, I don't think much of the east coast got good color this year. I'm not far from PA, Virginia, and the color just wasn't good this year. We had a drought during late summer into early Fall and then a cold snap. It just didn't help because if some leaves turned color they dropped off because of the cold snap. Happened to our paw paw tree. I'm looking forward to your new courses. Love your shots!!! And thanks for putting a smile on my face.
Crepuscular rays!
Sigma Art lenses are so frickin good.
Thanks for the hack. It might come useful one day.
I love to use paths and staircases for my own journey shots Parks on the Minnesota North Shore are blessed with opportunities for these. Pity they are four hours away, one way ..
useful hack thanks. your channel is entertaining and informative
Gavin, great video as always.Have you ever been to the Pittsburgh area? Maybe Ohiopyle State Park might interest you?
Your awesome light at start of your video I have seen quite a few times out here in Arizona! Fantastic video you all!❤
I need me some of those cool sunglasses ... trade for Twirls ? Awesome video as usual 🙌🏻
Your jokes are forgiven thanks to your beautiful photos 😂
best light you've ever seen while driving on the highway? ha welcome to PA! I lived there for 30 years... that's just how it goes! and then it wouldn't show up at Ricketts anyway even if you were there at the right time
Great info Gavin 👍🏽
I've got a bunch of old 52mm filters and used that hack back in the summer on a lens with a 67mm filter thread. Nice hack, though, Broccoli Ears. 🤣

That is a nice hack! All my lenses are one size in diameter… except one and of course is the widest of them all!!! 😅
This trick is a ringing (pun intended? pun at all?) endorsement for ultrawide lenses with normal/normal size filter threads that don't require proprietary accessories. It's much of why I went for the Nikon 14-30 f/4 with 82mm thread and not the 14-24 2.8 with 112mm threaded hood thing. 82mm filters can be found almost anywhere, and I LOVE my polarizer.
@fototripper

Always an absolute fantastic video Gavin and Amanda if you find yourself going through Ohio The upper half Cleveland But I highly suggest to go down to the Cuyahoga valley And from there go down to Wayne national Forest And then go to the southern end of Ohio down towards Kentucky I would say please for the love of God pick me up so I can go down with you guys at least one day That would be one massive bucket list for me Just to spend a couple of hours with You too down by the Cuyahoga valley or down by Morris county But I live in Cleveland Ohio and I can't drive anywhere blind man texting on a phone to you too
Sad to tell you that we had a better rays show and sunset in Shropshire, UK last week - driving up the M54 sadly.
Gavin, you aren't supposed to glue the lens hood on... cut away the broken hood, y'know, circumcise it. Then use a matte box and polarizer sheet on a wide angle lens so you don't risk a reflection on the back of the filter.
Can’t believe how long the drives are over there lol 😂 🤦♂️ nice shots bud

I have a suggestion for you. First, thank you for the free tutorial. I enjoyed it. The suggestion is that when you are masking in selected parts start with a white mask, mask out with black the areas you want to KEEP, then invert the mask. That way you can see what you’re doing. I think I learned that from a Tony Northrop video…

🍀 Oh man, that at 1:51, if you ever come to Switzerland, you will quite fast learn, in which supreme street situation you are on the American continent. In Europe you can almost no where pull over, on the highways (Autobahn/plural Autobahnen) it is not only impossible, it is even forbidden. What you are saying at 1:51, is almost exactly the same I say here in Switzerland, which is "The best photogasm (I borrowed your word creation, hope it is OK 😊) spots in Switzerland are in the middle of the highways!". And it's always ultra high traffic volume, except for midnight or so.

In Germany you can easy pay a speeding ticket even if speeding more than 21 km/h above the speed limit. In Switzerland that get's rather expensive, within built-up areas 16 km/h and more above speed limit becomes a felony, below it is a misdemeanour, on rural road the felony limit is 21 km/h and more, on Autobahns (Highways) the misdemeanour limit is 25 km/h and a felony at 26 km/h too fast. Everything above those three different limits will cost you CHF 2500 and more plus of the costs the court proceedings and of course your driving license is revoked. Fun, isn't it? 😜

... I wonder if it would actually make sense to buy a bigger square-shaped polarizer (no need to have it attached to your lenses) at all - you just place it in front of the camera when needed. I'm not sure right now, how big they are, you know what I'm talking about, but it would definitely be better than putting all those shots together in PS or whatever software you use ... and saving some money on all the different round polarizers with different diameters (as per particular lenses) in the process.
