This GEORGIAN City Is More Than Just A Transit Town | ZUGDIDI 🇬🇪

We finally made it to the city of Zugdidi in the samegrelo region here in Western Georgia 🇬🇪
We were originally heading to Abkhazia first but got denied entry as the border is still closed to tourists so here we are in the beautiful little city of Zugdidi.
We head out for a bit of a walk/City tour giving our impressions of what it's like here, most people just transit through the city onwards to the popular tourist mountains of Mestia & Ushguli but we like the underdog destinations so stayed for a while to see what it's all about.
Check out a few market scenes (crazy market video is coming next) found a classic fake McDonald's as always in Eastern Europe that serves shawarma.
Wandered the local neighbourhoods and streets before getting some sweet Georgian snacks from the bakery.
Then headed down the beautiful Zugdidi Boulevard that runs throughout the entire center of the city. Ate a super tasty cheap snack from another bakery before chatting to the street doggos.
We then check out the Dadiani Palace here in Zugdidi which used to house a noble family who governed this region back in the day before meeting an absolute nutter who would not leave us alone.
Just a bit of a quick city tour this place is well worth visiting for a while the market is the greatest in Georgia, people are nice and megrelian food is delicious. Definitely more to this place than just a transit town believe me.
We finish the video showing some bits we bought from the market for cracking prices and give an overall impression of the city 🇬🇪

7:19 that is my favorite pastry called cigarette because of its shape I guess. The stuffing inside is walnut paste and honey mix. It’s delicious. It is so delicious in fact that dunken donut of Georgia made its own version in a shape of a straw and calls it a dunken donut cookie. I enjoyed watching my little hometown. Thanks for posting this. Where you from mate? I was born and raised in zugdidi now a San Francisco Bay Area resident of 23 years… it’s been a while 😊

For info, Abkhazia did not refuse your visa, but the border checkpoint was closed at that time, they just reopened it couple days ago so if you want to try again, you can probably get a clearance letter and cross

Im Megrelian. Just to clarify: we are Georgian. It's just Georgia as a culture has been around for 6000 years (and our ancestors have lived in Georgia for around 10000 years) which means we have had a lot of time to diverge, and because Georgian geography is so insular with high mountains and a ridiculous amount of rivers and that, this means that our divergent subcultures have had the occasion to seriously idiosyncratise. So despite the fact that main Georgian and Megrelian Georgian languages are nothing like eachother (ask me to do a sentence of ur choice in each so i can illustrate the difference) they are directly related, and so are the people. The Svan people for instance diverged 4000 years ago from the rest of Georgians, so they are reaaally divergent, but fully Georgian nonetheless.

Hey apologies I ment they are branches of Georgian people! Thanks for the interesting info I appreciate it, how do you say some of the basic words? Are the languages very different or just slightly? Thanks Ek

@@EllisWR no problem, there's just a general misconception out there and I wanted to be sure people understood considering the sensitive political situation in Georgia. Very different. Basic words, ummm, like in Georgian 'the red house is on fire' is 'Tsitel sakhls tsetskhli kidia' and in Megrel it's 'Chita udes dachkhir ont' Though Megrelian today has taken on a lot of loan words from main Georgian, so you will see some similarity here and there, but it isn't intrinsic.

@@EllisWR I was born in the Caucasus and personally I don't like it here, especially the traditions, there is a problem here, remarriage, girlfriends, boyfriends, underdevelopment in the villages, poverty if you don't want it. And if you don't accept all the guests, everyone in the society will look at you badly Here, you are forced to set the table, make a speech, bless him with wine, even if you don't like the man If you decide to have a wife, you have to follow the local traditions, then you have to go to your father-in-law, you have to drink with your relatives, cousins, aunts and everyone else and respect everyone, and then you will get married traditionally In fact, it is hell
