As a Japanese person, I’ve waited for AC to adapt a Japanese story, so I can play an epic story of a SAMURAI in Japan. Now in current year, we don’t get a samurai but a forced diversity character that’s not a samurai, OR Japanese. For context; the real historical Yasuke met Nobunaga for a year, then was sold back to the Jesuits and never obtained a rank as a samurai.

Yasuke is the earliest known African to appear in Japanese historical records, though his confirmed period of stay in Japan was relatively short - about three years, from 17 August, 1579 to 21 June, 1582"

Everybody really wanted an Assassins Creed game set in Japan for a LONG time because the AESTHETIC of the region at that time and AC as series and what it is about just fit like a glove. Everybody when thet pleaded with Ubi to make an AC set in Japan imagined playing as a covert japanese ninja who also happens to be an assassin. Or imagine if all ninja's were actually Templars and they could use the same tactics as you do for the first time in the series history. THAT is what people had in their heads when they thought "AC in Japan". Not a black samurai going around and clubbing other samurai over the head. It's like if they inserted random black and asian people in Kingdom Come 2 that takes place in 15th century Bohemia AND made you play as one. Even if you had historical documents to prove there were some black people in the region, it's not representative of what that region was like in general and ruins the fantasy of going to that time period and immersing yourself in that world.

Japan has one of the most prominent histories on the planet that involved individuals/ whole clans trained in stealth, sabotage, assassination, and subterfuge. And for the first iteration of a game in this setting, we cast aside most of that potential for the sake of subverting audience expectations? I have no idea what Ubisoft is trying at this point, or is the outrage they're farming just a marketing ploy? At this point, players who want their fill of AC in Japan, just indugle in the many titles that beat Ubisoft to the punch. Ghosts of Tshushima,Sekiro, Nioh, etc

That's kind of the point though. The game is going to be played mostly by Assassins Creed fans. They need a selling point to set it out from the games you listed, because they don't have as good gameplay. So it seems like they are going with the uniqueness of a story around Yasuke as an MC. It is essentially reduced to something similar to the English shwa, or what every vowel not part of a stressed syllable is reduced to in English. When Nobunaga died, he was called a slave and an animal and sent back to the Jessuits. Obviously they're going to go the route that maybe Yasuke is on the run after Nobunaga's death in this game, and maybe that's how we end up using him to avenge his daimyo but I mean.... More mass or higher velocity results in more energy and potentially more force on impact.

The more lethal the weapon is, the difference in the initial force can be bigger... Also keep in mind, that it contains the UPCOMING DLCs, thus meaning that you are not getting on those in 1st day. You need to have that subscription on for like that 4-6months that they spend to release those DLCs. The DLCs can be possibly even made already, but they do not want to release them at the same time, since they want you to stay subscribed for those, and after those months, they have a new game release coming in next month that you are going to wait to be released since its coming soon. Also there are tooooons of people who join these subscriptions, have them auto reneweled, and forget to turn them of, spending 200usd for the monthly plan for a year, even if they only played 1-2 games there.

Here are the facts: Yasuke arrived in Japan in 1579 in service of the Italian Jesuit missionary Alessandro Valignano. He accompanied Valignano when the latter came to the Kyoto area in March 1581 and his appearance caused a lot of interest with the local people. When Yasuke was presented to Oda Nobunaga, the Japanese Daimyō thought that his skin must have been coloured with black ink. Nobunaga had him strip from the waist up and made him scrub his skin. These events are recorded in a 1581 letter of the Jesuit Luís Fróis to Lourenço Mexia, and in the 1582 Annual Report of the Jesuit Mission in Japan, also by Fróis. "When Nobunaga realized that the African's skin was indeed black, he took an interest in him." According to a Japanese accounting of Yaskue states: On the 23rd of the 2nd month 1581, a black page came from the Christian countries. The man was healthy with a good demeanour and Nobunaga praised Yasuke's strength. Some say that Yasuke could speak or was taught Japanese, and it is stated Nobunaga enjoyed talking with him. However, it is more likely that a Jesuit missionary translated for them, in order to control the dialogue as they were not ones to miss an opportunity to interact with Nobunaga in order to advance their mission. Reportedly, Nobunaga's nephew gave him a sum of money at this first meeting, for his travels, and on 14 May, Yasuke departed for Echizen Province with Fróis and the other Christians. During this trip, they met local warlords such as Shibata Katsutoyo, Hashiba Hidekatsu, and Shibata Katsuie, They returned to Kyoto on 30 May. At some point, although when is not exactly clear, Yasuke entered Nobunaga's service. Yasuke was also mentioned in the prototype of Shinchō ki owned by Sonkeikaku Bunko , the archives of the Maeda clan. According to this, Yasuke was given his own residence and a short, ceremonial katana by Nobunaga. Nobunaga also assigned him the duty of weapon bearer (much to the annoyance of actual samurai) Here is where the facts change to a more fantasised version of events: Nobunaga had a propensity for the unique, and he was particularly interested in all things foreign. Clearly he was fascinated by Yasuke, and this was documented to be to the chagrin of many of his top generals such as Akechi Mitsuhide, who is reported to have been disgusted by the site of Yasuke, and saw him as nothing more than a wild beast. After the Battle of Tenmokuzan, Nobunaga led his force, including Yasuke, and inspected the former territory of the Takeda clan. So people make the assumption that Yasuke actually fought in this battle, and that he donned Samurai armour and fought as a samurai hero. A sword bearer (Yasuke) stays behind with the general camp, near to the lord, they don't go out on the battlefield, and there is no record of Yasuke fighting any battle. There is also no record of Yasuke receiving martial arts training, or use of the Japanese sword, either when in the service of Nobunaga or the years prior. The truth is that his time with Nobunaga was limited, as they first met in 1581 and Oda Nobunaga was dead a year later. This is hardly enough time for Yasuke to be trained to be the great warrior. Yasuke as a Samurai: Now for either commercial purpose, or some social equity rationale, some people attempt to equate Yasuke as a non Japanese Samurai in the same way the English sailor William Adams (Pilot) was later viewed. However, Adams was actually presented Samurai status, and there is no record of Yasuke being bestowed similar Samurai status. The facts are that Oda Nobunaga made him a servant for a few months. A few months... not a lifetime of service dedicated to serving his lord, ready to give his life in the service of the Oda. Another fact that is clear; Yasuke was kept around as a talking piece, an oddity for Nobunaga to show off, much in the same way he enjoyed irking other Daimyo by showing them Azai Nagamasa's gold plated skull. Despite modern versions of Yasuke, if he was this great Samurai some would have you believe, then it stands to reason that he would have either fought to the death at Honnoji but instead was alleged to have been taken by Mitsuhide troops soon after the Honnoji incident, but Akechi had his men return him to the Christian missionaries. All that is known about the fate of Yaskue , is that he was seen with the Christian Missionaries after Nobunagas death and reportedly fled the country soon after. So while people may attempt to change the story of Yasuke to suit their agenda, the truth is that such blatantly false attempts to rewrite history are pure revisionism and nothing more. Faking history because it makes you "feel good" does nothing but a disservice to all students of the culture, the Japanese nation and the historical record. In fiction i believe it is 100% fine to take these liberties but the amount of people who believe these stories as fact is shocking

I get Japanesse people don´t feel represented in their own country and argueably during the most important time period of Japanesse history, but this time they at least inserted a historically real black guy into popular "culture". Though him being exactly a samurai is rather unlikely. He is in fact recorded fighting with a sword in Nobunaga´s service and was likely his bodyguard or an exotic bouncer. He is in fact recorded coming to Japan in service of Alessandro Valignano, the chief Catholic missionary in the East at the time, also quite likely as his bodyguard and is mentioned being exceptionally strong. Therefore it´s completely plausible portraying him as a warrior. But i agree they should have added the possibility of playing as an Japanesse male samurai or ninja so that the main actors of Sengoku are not left out. There should be a push to remake the game till november.

Yasuke was no more than a vassal or servant of Oda Nobunaga. He is mentioned sparingly, and never as a warrior. There are no records of his military career, no evidence he even entered combat. Its especially disrespectful to Japanese culture because there are dozens of Japanese samurai and ninja who could've been chosen for this game, and instead they decide to pick a man who is literally the 'token black guy' during the period he is known from.

  • @MustardSkaven

Yeah there is barely any info on him and if he was a sword bearer, he would not have seen combat. Sword bearers were usually kids that carried the swords around outside of battle. When Adams was awarded samurai status, the contemporary sources shouldn't shut up about it, cause it was a foreigner becoming a samurai. But not a single mention of Yasuke becoming samurai? That says enough.

For years we wanted a AC game based in Japan historically. Ubisoft went straight with the “black samurai myth”. The point of all of this, is they had TONS of options with legendary shinobi and samurai but they went right to the black samurai. My one friend is from Japan and his father still lives in Japan, I heard the news from him and he was so disappointed with the “black samurai myth”. He actually said that it is racist from Ubisoft. How can you hide or blend in if your are the ONLY black person in a samurai gear in Japan?? I know that AC is not historically anymore and more like a historic fantasy but this is just ridiculous😂

Is ok with me personally till the Japanese can get their story right abt ww2 and stop worshiping war criminals at there shrines I'm not sure how much I want their history to be celebrated in a way they can enjoy I think its fine for American games to just use their country as a setting. like a place we can just use most Americans never learn enough Japanese history cause while most interesting stuff in history was happening japan was hiding in their room as a nation. because of this u can do what u want with the setting cause only weebs and people from japan will correct u and japan didnt effect the outside world much in 1600 so u can do whatever bc the historical conscious of us doesn't even register 1600s japan

Isn't it just weird how everyone seems to have their OWN story about yasuke? After combing through research for about an hour it seems that most end up concluding he WAS a samurai in Japan during the Sengokku war period. This isn't to say that many conflicting stories don't exist. There exists many theories, for example this entire comment section, that posit entirely different claims. One person states "The real historical Yasuke met Nobunaga for a year, then was sold back to the Jesuits and never obtained a rank as samurai". Some sources say that when he visited Japan, it was the 1550's, while other sources state differently. Someone else in the comments claims he was there from 1579-1582 (however their source is Wikipedia which is shoddy at best). Here's my problem, at the end of the day: This is a historical figure that existed ~500 years ago. So without doubt, of course there is going to be misinformation spread all over the place. I don't believe there is any one way to know for certain if he was or was not a samurai, I feel like people that argue in favor of him being a samurai have never bothered to read about him. Just as the other side who claim that he was never a samurai, cherry pick their evidence or don't research either. This whole argument is fucking stupid if you ask me. Instead of people just being like "oh hey, Ubisoft is making ANOTHER cash-grab Assassins creed game, a franchise for notoriously being dog shit? Oh hey, they either want me to spend $130 to pre-order it or pay a monthly subscription to play it? No thanks, I'll spend my money wiser", instead it's a melting pot of dumb ass opinions. We get it, Ubisoft is pandering, wanna know something crazy though, most people just ignore it and forget it exists, instead of shitting their pants about it on the internet. Vote with your wallet, instead of causing even more publicity for this dog shit series.
