This FORGOTTEN Tudor Woman Who Could Have Been Queen...

The Forgotten Tudor Woman Who Could Have Been Queen - Arbella Stuart
History is a very interesting thing, and often it is only those who are remembered for something who can then tell the tale of the past. there is one story which has been lost to time, because it is very true when they say that history is written by the victors. We all know the story of king, Henry the eighth, and his six wives, the story of Queen Elizabeth the first, the virgin Queen and the story of Mary the first, also known as bloody Mary. However there is one lady who if history had been different. If she had been awarded her inheritance and if the line of succession had gone in a slightly different way, well she could have been queen of England. Her story is a what if. Would Scottish and English history have been any different if Queen Arbella had succeeded Queen Elizabeth the first instead of James the sixth of Scotland. Would the union of England and Scotland have taken place in the way which we know it and would Queen Elizabeth II our late Monarch have actually ever been queen, how would the line of succession been different.
Lady Arbella Stuart is a remarkable lady who not many people have heard of. So join us today as we tell her story.

    Worth noting that William Seymour was a descendent of Mary Tudor (Henry 8th sister), via Lady Katherine Grey. Their marriage strengthened her claim to the throne and any child would have more claim than James’s child.

    ...and that's exactly why the reigning monarch insisted that anyone close to the crown needed permission to marry..to avoid those kinds of claims. Anyway, Arbella's claim was not as strong as James' was. James was the great-grandson of Margaret Tudor via her firstborn SON (and through her first marriage to a king, albeit of Scotland)....he was ALSO the great-grandson of Margaret Tudor via her daughter trough a second marriage....THAT daughter's FIRSTBORN son was his father, while Arbella's claim came through the second son of the daughter of that second marriage. Not nearly as strong a claim.

    @@leanie5234 I agree James individually had the stronger claim. The risk with Arabella and Seymour joining together would be it brings together those who wanted to follow Henry 8th will which put Mary’s decedents before Margaret’s (Edward also stated they were his successor), and those who wanted an English monarch (and not join the two kingdoms). If they had a child it had a strong claim from both sides, whereas James’s child would only have his claim handed down. I don’t know if Arabella was marrying for love or power, either way it didn’t work out

    Is it me or was there just a large amount of female heirs to the throne after Elizabeth? She also did have male cousins too, but it seems there were more ladies than men overall.

    When Edward died, there were eight female heirs to the throne, one being Elizabeth I. So, Henry VIII tore a hole in the earth for nothing.

    It’s beginning to seem that the Tudors (from Owen Tudor to Queen Elizabeth 1) were unlucky with heirs but relentless when it came to other family members reproducing. Outside of their control. What would have happened if Mary Tudor, sister of Henry 8…had produced a male heir with the king of France? Would he have ended like Mary, Queen of Scots?

  • @carag2567

    @carag2567

    As a male heir? Not likely. Mary's life was spared for as long as it was because she was a descendant of Henry VII via Margaret Tudor, her grandmother. But she was a woman. A male heir wouldn't have been seen as a threat but an asset because of Male-preference primogeniture.

    What is the point of giving a woman an education, when she is not allowed to use it ?. Reminds me of the popular sitcoms of "I dream of Jeanie and Bewitched", where both woman had great power and were subjugated by men. Paradoxically, society thought doing this to women was hilarious, but the reality of being so controlled to the point of being constantly reminded of being the "wrong gender" and the consequences that accompanies it, destroys the soul.

    Arabella was a Stuart not a Tudor. Also Arabella was a first cousin once removed cousin of Mary Queen of Scot, as her father Charles Stuart was Mary's first cousin. It was only marriage that made her Arabella's aunt. James VI claim was far superior as his mother Mary Queen of Scots claim was superior to both Henry Stuart Lord Darnley and Charles Stuart were from the second marriage Mary was from first marriage of Queen Margaret Tudor. Lady Arabella had a very tragic life denied her legitimate claim to the lennox earldom. But she was a Stuart of Royal blood descended from King's of both Scotland and England and should have been given a royal funeral by King James VI /I. But at least she is buried in her cousin"s once removed tomb Mary Queen of Scots amongst her Stuart relations in Westminster Abbey. One cannot but feel pity for Lady Arabella Stuart
