This family drops the disability 'to do' list and loves life

Meet Donna Cappelli, who is mom to Julian, 15, who has cerebral palsy, and his brother Dante, 17, and married to Gerardo.
Julian’s greatest challenge is uncontrolled movement, Donna says. “If he tries to do something, his body does the opposite. It’s like him doing a marathon every single day.”
For Julian, a soccer enthusiast, therapy doesn’t always translate into positive change.
Donna’s advice for other parents? “Try to live your life normally. Try not to get caught up in a lot of the things that you feel you need to do for your child...The best thing for us is when we go and do something for Julian and not worry a day about having to do homework. And not have to do therapy and not have to stretch him out…”
Julian’s advice? “It’s okay to be different. Try what you like and it will distract you from your loneliness.”

Hearing Julian talk about his loneliness is shattering. He is wise beyond his years. I hope he isn't lonely any more!

I'm a victim of a similar phenomenon although I do have a beautiful family ...Yes I can talk and type very well ..but due to my cp its hard to make friends as my profession itself happens to be a psychologist which involves people who come with already existing crisis .

You speak wise words. I have a son with severe autism who had every therapy and it took its toll. Now, I spend my days with him trying to do what makes him happy. And, yes, the sleep deprivations is killer.

This broke my heart so much! My son is nonverbal and he has autism and a mild intellectual disability and I cry everyday because I wish he could just tell me how he feels I can only imagine how stressful and lonely it might be. Your so strong your family is so strong and beautiful thank you for sharing your story

As a quadriplegic, I too dropped the disabled 'to do' list and got on with life. If Julian ever wants a new friend, then just message me and I will be happy to be his friends he seems smart, funny and very intelligent. It is not about the therapy, it is about living life.

Julian you rock! My brother Ben is 31 and living with CP. He and I went to high school at the same time, and I know it wasn't easy for him. I hear your challenges. But know that when you finish, you'll have achieved something monumental. It was amazing, as family, to be there and see my Ben graduate.
