    The thing about John crushing the ruby is that the fates told him it would happen when they said "you'll crush the dream lords power in your hand". So it could've been avoided if John wasn't so delusional

    It's not the Dream Lord's power. It's the Dream Lord's life. That's an important difference because the latter motivates John to crush the ruby. He's already talked about a world without the Sandman, and the Fates hand the idea of crushing the ruby to him on a silver platter. The Fates don't tend to lie, but they also don't tend to tell 100% of the truth either. This could be argued as the Fates intervening in the struggle or just making sure that John's future played about how it was supposed to.

    An important point to understand I think is that dreams are not lies. But people in pursuit of their dreams will tell lies. Mostly these are white lies, the ones that get told to protect somebodys feelings or to make the interaction smoother "hello handsome". Morpheus made it clear in this episode, John didn't remove the lies from people with the Ruby. He manipulated their dreams and with that their innermost motivations in such he way he thought they wouldn't lie but bare their true feelings and impulses. Here is the problem with that: To do that he manipulated them in such a way that yes, they told no lies. But they also weren't themselves... Their dreams were played with and through that the truth of their being destroyed. And like Dream said, John took their hope, their dreams away, and what he left is only darkness

    The atmosphere in this episode is so well done. Partly the background music, partly the camera angles and shots and partly the way that the actors are just slightly off - little hints of tension between them and that they don’t really believe what they are saying.

    It is a truly great episode! Some people lie in orde to hurt, betray or deceive others! Some people lie to keep from causing hurt or pain to someone or destroying another person's dreams, passion or hope! I can best explain it "without hopes and dreams we have nothing left"! My ancestors were enslaved in this country over 400 years ago! However, They had hopes and dreams of one day being free ot their loved ones being free! That is how powerful hope and dreams are!!!

    I think the live version made the story WAY more coherent and interesting than the comics. The comic version was just kinda... raw chaos and horror. Which is nice, but... this is better. I generally think the changes are great ones, because Gaiman has had 35 years to really think and rethink his story.

    3:45 - John wasn't lying at all, he was being disingenuous or dishonest of the facts. Lying is an active intent to tell a falsehood, being dishonest is an active intent to deceive. You can tell the truth and be dishonest! 10:00 - Sandman is also named Morpheus, as well as Dream of the Endless, and yet another name 26:15 - John isn't into this, he is exposing this...by forcing everyone in the dinner to live out the truth, this was the outcomes. But what happens when you go back to wearing the masks of your daily lives in the midst of all this?

  • @ShadowyFox_86

    @ShadowyFox_86

    A Lie by dictionary definition is "a false statement made with deliberate intent to deceive; an intentional untruth." If he was being disingenuous, then he's lying about intent. If he's dishonest, then he has a disposition to lie. All three of those things, based on definition, are lying. That's why there's a term referred to as a "lie of omission." The argument that you can be dishonest and tell the truth is really stretching your argument than it's supported. John doesn't really lie. That's part of his character. He's honest to a fault. John's response to his mother is delusional thinking, which is totally separate from lying. He genuinely believes what he said about defending himself. That's why it's a delusion: reality does not support his belief. I take issue with the idea of John is forcing everyone to "live out the truth." Thats not really their truth, as Dream points out when he and John are talking about the truth of humanity. John is actively manipulating the situation through use of the ruby. He's removing what he views to be lies, but those don't really lead to the truth. What it does is remove most of their self control and force people into their most base selves. Even Dream points out the flaws in John's "logic" and that what John is doing is taking away the truth of humanity. He clearly chooses to make humanity suffer. I get the points you're trying to make, but they're not supported by what we've seen on screen when it comes to John's behaviors and his mental state.
