This Cruise Ship Restaurant Hangs OFF THE SIDE

Ойын-сауық

Welcome to the magic carpet onboard the Celebrity Edge, I’m currently 14 storeys above sea level recording this on a platform that is sticking off the side of a cruise ship. I’ve been following this ships journey since before she was launched and ever since the first time I saw her I’ve had some big questions.
For a really big cruise ship: • I Survived a Week on C...
To see a teeeeeeny ship (only 24 guests): • I Spent a Week on 1930...
My shortest cruise ever (cancelled at dinner): • Our Cruise Was CANCELL...
The first of course being what on earth is that orange thing on the side of the ship for?. When I learnt that it was called the ‘Magic Carpet’ my questions moved from what to why, why would a cruise line add this to the side of the ship, I didn’t know what it would be used for and I wondered how on earth the cruise ship could stay afloat with this hanging off one side.
The Magic Carpet weighs over 90 tons, you’d think something that big and heavy would affect the balance of the ship.
As soon as I saw the Celebrity Edge in Barcelona I was amazed by the structure. The orange really stood out against the blue ship and sky and the rectangular shape looked so different to the curves of the rest of the ship, she certainly stood out against the other cruise ships in port.

My initial reaction was gimmicky, but it's the total opposite. Highly functional for tendering and just so happens to be a bar later, what an excellent design.

But it's also mostly a gimmick. I went on an 11 day cruise on the Edge and not once did the magic carpet move. It's a really cool feature that could be very useful, but they seem to rarely ever use it.

This magic carpet lounge is a gimmick. They already had 7 bars on that cruise and had no need to add this. They are just looking for new ways to attract more people.

@@renkomon.8312 if it was on a more exploratory ship that used it as a tender dock more often, then it wouldn't be a gimmick. As it is now, it's just a gimmick that happens to occasionally be useful.

You are right. If it was actually working then it would not be seen as such. It is a shame though it could be useful to get from one level to another without an elevator or the stairs. Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner.

My sail boat, on which I live with my wife and 2 cats, weighs exactly 10 times less than the magic carpet! It looks like a monstrosity, but it does make the ship stand out. Maybe, if it proves popular, they will have one on the port side too, especially when it comes to boarding tenders.

Silly question, but how do you afford to go on so many cruises? I've been on one and that was probably the first and last one as it was a bucket list holiday only. 😢

Hellooo. I run my own business now and work from the ships. If you want to see how that works >>> emmacruises.com/7-ways-i-make-money-as-a-full-time-travel-content-creator-tools-resources/ 😀🙏❤️

Can i give one suggestion, you need to do a review video on the Titanic movie. Its a must for a cruise ship review channel.

If the tendering works so well, I wonder why they don’t have one on the opposite side? Wouldn’t that be twice as fast or is there a downside I’m not seeing?

I guess they’d not have the crew to operate that and at land there’s limited places they can drop off people (1 or 2 spaces) so there wouldn’t be any point if there’s nowhere to put extra people 😀🥳

I've now cruised 5 times on Edge, and never once did the MC serve as a restaurant. They only served drinks in a bar setting.

One thing I wonder is whether they'll design a ship with 2 magic carpets (one on each side).

Ha ha, yet I'm pretty sure it was full everyday so they must be able to charge that. Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼

I think you might want to add a zero to your Celebrity Edge tonnage. I think it comes in at around 129,500 Gross tonnes and not 13000 tonnes. But that makes the Magic Carpet even less significant when it comes to weight on one side.

Did Captain Hudson get to meet Captain Kate? That would've been amazing.

I don't get the point of it used for walk on/off tendering. Would a pull up moat bridge not have done the exact same job? I thought the bar was used as an elevator for 100 people from a higher deck to the tender, but no?
